I don’t know anything about other models from this brand, but I am fully satisfied with this product. The material is stylish, but it smells for the first couple of days. If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy laser measuring, right? No!

Accuracy

Most laser tape measures are very accurate, even our recommended budget model is accurate down to +/-3mm with the more advanced models, accurate down to +/- 1mm. With a standard tape measure you could never be this accurate as a slight bend or kink in the tape, would mean your measurement would never be as accurate as a laser distance measurer.

Continuous measurement

All models have this simple feature and it works like a manual tape measure. You can move the laser tape measure, away or towards a fixed point, and the reading will automatically change. This is ideal for situations such as putting up fixing or picture frames, where you want to space them all apart evenly.

Stake-out function

Used to measure the same length repetitively. For example, you may want to fit a spot light under kitchen cabinets every 300mm. From a starting point, the feature would tell you every time you reach another 300mm, so you could fit a spots light exactly 300mm apart.

Look for models that conform to the new ISO international standard for laser measuring instruments. This means, they have been tested and will accurately measure in normal working conditions, not just in ideal situations in a lab.

Batteries and Battery Life

Laser tapes have either replaceable or rechargeable batteries. Battery life depends greatly on the amount and type of use. Most units will need new batteries or need to be recharged frequently (every to hours). So, it is a good idea always to keep spare batteries with you and to power off the unit when you arenot using it. Some units have an auto shut-off mode to help increase battery life.

Many models can store multiple measurements, so you will not need to stop and write down measurements as you go along. Most models store at least a few measurements. Look for one that stores multiple measurements if you are planning on using it for big or complex jobs. Memory is not important for small jobs though.

Other Features

Many laser tape measures also come with convenient accessories. Most models include batteries, and some come with a carrying pouch or a holster and belt loop. Most laser tape measures come with a basic manufacturer’s warranty, and the manufacturer will replace the unit if it is defective or breaks within the warranty period. Rechargeable units generally include a rechargeable battery and include a battery and charger.

Some laser tapes are made for heavy outdoor use and have durable cases, scratch proof screens or back-lit screens. Others are made for lighter indoor use. Look for something durable and shock, scratch and water resistant if you are using it outdoors. Scratch resistance is a nice feature for indoor use, but you will not need one that is water resistant if you are just using it inside.

Mid-range laser measure

This covers laser measures that are used in general construction. It’s for people who are into construction jobs and need to do a lot of measurements. This works mostly indoors but the “indoor” may be a fabrication yard. This can be used by both professionals and amateurs depending on the frequency of use.

Hi-end laser measure

This covers laser measures that leave little or no room for errors. If you’re into construction and fabrication jobs where the slightest error in measurement can be risky, then the hi-end laser measures should be your best option. This is mostly used by professionals and they usually cover the widest ranges with no errors.

Now that you know the categories, do you know what your measurement needs are? If yes, our job is half done. The next step is to look at the features that most laser measures have, compare them to your measurement needs and voila, you have all the information needed to make your purchase decision. Even if you don’t know your measurement needs just yet, we trust that you will, by the end of this review.

Please note that while it might be good to have a multimeter handy (for situations where a laser measure isn’t ideal), they are different tools. Also don’t forget to use adequate eye protection when using a laser measure as pointing a laser directly into the eye can cause permanent retina damage. Maximum caution should be taken when using this device.

The price of a product is usually reflective of its quality. Different factors affect the price that a brand places on its products. For instance, a brand that is already known for certain product lines may have more expensive options for that product. That doesn’t mean that lesser known brands don’t have products with similar or better quality. Why go for a laser measure with complicated functions when all you need is one with which to measure length or distance from one point to another? Some functions of a laser measure are: addition and subtraction, continuous measurement, single indirect measurement, double indirect measurement, combined indirect measurement, Pythagorean measurement, angle measurement, multi surface area measurement, maximum measurement, minimum measurement, trapezoid measurement, etc. Your job need determines whether getting a laser measure with these number of functions will ease your work or whether it will be too many unnecessary functions.

Some laser measures have back-lit screens while others don’t. If your job requires that you work in dark rooms or very bright light, it’ll be preferable to choose a laser measure that won’t make you squint or strain your eyes to read its display. Some laser measures also have multiple line displays which can be helpful in reading different measurements at once.

Battery life is very key to determining your choice of laser measure. Most options run on either replaceable batteries or rechargeable batteries. If you work for long hours, it’ll be more convenient to work with those with replaceable batteries as your job may not be interrupted.

Do you need a laser measure with features such as a sound marker, auto shut off, Bluetooth connectivity, etc.? These are some interesting features that add to the functionality of your laser measure, so be on the look out for them.

How To Use A Laser Distance Measure 

To make a simple distance measurement using a laser measure the user must place the instrument at one end of the line that is to be measured and aim the laser beam at a solid target such as a wall or cabinet.

If a solid object is not available then a plastic target can be placed at the required destination to allow the laser beam to be reflected.

Next, the button is pressed and the distance is measured and displayed on the laser measure’s screen.

If a simple distance was all that was required then the job is already done but a whole range of options still exist for the user.

Areas and volumes can be calculated by taking further measurements and making use of the on-board functions to perform the calculations for you.

Each model is different so it is always advisable to spend some time with the user manual before attempting some of the more advanced tasks.

There are many different laser distance measures available for use and so there is a lot to consider when trying to choose the right one for you. So, what laser measure is right for you? Here are some things to consider: – Laser distance measures can range in price from £9- £59so what you are willing to spend is an important factor to consider.

Indoor/Outdoor Use – Do you need to have a laser measure that can be used for indoor and outdoor measuring? Some laser measures, such as the Leica DISTO D510, can do this. However, other measures will only be suitable for one or the other.

Lasers can be used in various ways to measure distances or displacements without physical contact.

In fact they allow for the most sensitive and precise length measurements, for extremely fast recordings (sometimes with a bandwidth of many megahertz), and for the largest measurement ranges, even though these qualities are usually not combined by a single technique.

Depending on the specific demands, very different technical approaches can be appropriate.

They find a wide range of applications, for example in architecture, inspection of fabrication halls, criminal scene investigation (CSI), and in the military.

Techniques for Distance Measurements

Triangulation is a geometric method, useful for distances in the range of ≈ 1 mm to many kilometers.

Time-of-flight measurements (or pulse measurements) are based on measuring the time of flight of a laser pulse from the measurement device to some target and back again.

Such methods are typically used for large distances such as hundreds of meters or many kilometers.

Using advanced techniques, it is possible to measure the distance between Earth and the Moon with an accuracy of a few centimeters.

Typical accuracies of simple devices for short distances are a few millimeters or centimeters. phase shift method uses an intensity-modulated laser beam.

Compared with interferometric techniques, its accuracy is lower, but it allows unambiguous measurements over larger distances and is more suitable for targets with diffuse reflection.

Note that the phase shift technique is sometimes also called a time-of-flight technique, as the phase shift is proportional to the time of flight, but the term is more suitable for methods as described above where the time of flight of a light pulse is measured.

Frequency modulation methods involve frequency-modulated laser beams, for example with a repetitive linear frequency ramp.

The distance to be measured can be translated into a frequency offset, which may be measured via a beat note of the sent-out and received beam.

Interferometers allow for distance measurements with an accuracy which is far better than the wavelength of the light used.

Look for the total range of any single device. If you consistently work in a smaller area or on bigger commercial sites or larger homes, you need a device that has a larger measuring range. You may also need a device with larger memory capacity for complex projects, such as road construction.

Laser Distance Measurer

Laser distance measurers are not only faster and easier to use than linear tape measurer, they are also more accurate. Simply aim the device to your end point and the distance displays on the screen. Many of these devices can also calculate various angles and perform calculations. Some of these quality measuring tools have memory capacity for auto calculations that are common to your projects or profession.

Higher-end models have a much higher range than standard models. For example, a lower-range model can measure distances of up to 20 meters. This standard model should suffice for single unit dwellings, smaller homes or offices. Larger units measure distances of 300 to 800 feet. These are well suited for larger homes and commercial projects. Road workers require distance measurers with longer ranges, and should also look for models that have Bluetooth functionality.

But what I want to know is does the accuracy hold up over a long distance.  That is why I chose the Leica DISTO DLaser Measure as the most accurate.  Over a distance of 330feet, the DISTO Dstill is accurate within 1/1of an inch.

The tool they use to unleash this super power is called a laser measure.  Or in my case, since I use it instead of a tape measure in many cases, a digital laser tape measure.

How Accurate Are Laser Measures

But if you have incredibly far distances you need to measure, and have even more money to spend, then there are laser measures that will go up to 82feet, and still be as accurate as 1/2inch at that distance.  Now that’s incredible.

Uses For A Digital Laser Tape Measure

Some of the more advanced laser tape measures with more functionality even have stud finding features and will alert you at the correct distance where one should be located.

Floor Installation

Laser characteristics to be measured

Today’s performance measurement products can gather all kinds of information. Laser output power is a good indicator of the system’s overall performance. Tracking this measurement over time gives engineers or technicians the information they need to determine when corrective action is necessary. However, laser power does not tell the entire story about the system’s behavior.

Beam profiling is an important set of measurements. Along with the visual representation of how the laser’s beam is sized and shaped, other useful measurements can be generated. These may include ellipticity, Gaussian or top-hat fit, beam propagation ratio, or the beam parameter product. Laser spot size, or beam waist, and laser output power also are critical measurements to be taken when trying to understand the laser’s interaction with the process.

When components start to age and become contaminated, thermal effects become more of a factor. When losses occur due to contamination, laser components can change shape. Even the slightest changes can result in a shift of the laser’s focused spot location. When this happens, the beam size being applied to the process will increase, resulting in a relatively lower power density. Dynamic focused spot location should be measured periodically in order to ensure optimal laser system performance.

When working with pulsed lasers, the time duration of the pulse and the pulse shape often are good indicators of how efficiently the laser’s pulsing technique is performing. The programmed pulse shape, pulse duration and the pulse frequency (i.e., repetition rate) should be measured periodically and compared with the laser’s settings.

Performance measurement techniques

The need to measure laser performance is as old as the laser itself. There have been many tools and techniques that have served the industry well, and they still are in use today but may not be providing the complete story of how your laser is performing. Some laser engineers still use simple, convection-cooled thermopile devices, known as “power pucks.” Similar in nature to a meat thermometer, the element is placed in the beam’s path and away from the focused spot, and the laser is fired for a given amount of time. The device then presents a number — either a temperature reading or an output reading, the latter of which is measured in watts. While this can indicate how the laser is performing at that point in time, the data usually is incomplete.

Electronic power measurement gives the engineer a better indication of how the laser is behaving. A water-cooled thermopile sensor allows for the collection of laser power measurement data throughout the course of several minutes. This sensor, coupled with either a meter or interface to a local PC or laptop, provides a graph of how laser power changes during this time period. Dynamic trends in laser power tell the engineer what might be wrong with a laser. For instance, a consistently low laser power — in the range of to 1percent or so — indicates that optics should be cleaned or changed; a drop in laser power over a few seconds indicates a damaged or well-aged optic in the beam’s path; and erratic power readings could indicate something wrong with the laser source, such as a faulty power supply or a resonator gas leak.

The Stanley PowerLock is the best tape measure for a number of reasons. It has a durable blade, a functional tang, a solid stand-out, a strong locking lever, and a convenient belt hook. The PowerLock is a very basic tool and its pared-down simplicity makes it very light and easy to handle. It’s one of the most inexpensive tapes that we looked at, as well as one of the best, combining quality and value. The other tapes, which cost more, all had failings—a poorly protected blade, a gigantic tang, a lame stand-out, or an impossible belt clip.

Again, the most important characteristic of a superior tape measure is the durability of the blade. The Stanley blade is coated with a Mylar polyester film, which our testing proved to be superior to most of the other tapes. Remember, this is the key point in the durability and longevity of a tape measure. When we dragged the weighted sandpaper over the PowerLock, the coating showed some surface scratching, but the printing remained fully intact. On many of the other tapes, like the Johnsons and the FastCaps, the printing came off like we were erasing a pencil mark. The Stanley was in the small class of tapes that held up to this abuse.

We also found that the durability of the PowerLock’s blade extends beyond a resistance to grit and debris into kinking and general abuse as well. One of the projects we used the tapes on was measuring for 20 custom storm windows, a task consisting of seven measurements per window. For the diagonals, we planted the tang at the lower corner, extended the tapes, and then bent them over with a twist in order to read the upper corner. The PowerLock handled this repetitive bending and kinking with no problems, but we were surprised at how quickly this task worked over some of the tapes, like the Keson and the Tajimas, which quickly developed slight warps and wrinkles in the thin blades.

Top to bottom: FastCap Lefty/Righty, PowerLock, and Milwaukee. The FastCap held up poorly to the abrasion test. The PowerLock did considerably better, but there are still a couple scratches that made it to bare metal. The Milwaukee blade only shows surface marring.

The tang on the PowerLock is minimal, but very effective. It was dead-on accurate when we tested it with the Lixer Calibrator, meaning both the push and pull measurement are right where they’re supposed to be. This indicates the quality of the tang as well as its relationship with the tape blade. In the PTR round-up, DeBoer writes, “believe it or not, we found the Stanley PowerLock to be the epitome of how a tang should move—forward and backwards with almost no lateral movement. Maybe that’s why the tape has been around for 50 years.” As we said above, all of the tapes are within what we feel to be the margin of error for accuracy. Still, using the PowerLock for a carpentry project, we were comforted knowing that it is 100 percent dead-on accurate.

The PowerLock has a blade stand-out of feet, inches, which is on the upper side of the limit indicated by Clement and DeBoer. This length is attained with the PowerLock’s 1-inch-wide blade and was the third furthest stand-out of the 1-inch tapes (our step-up Milwaukee has feet, inches and the Starrett has a bizarro-long feet, inches).

The locking lever is strong and easy to use, with a nice texture that prevents the thumb from slipping. You can easily lock the blade with one hand. Once locked, the tape didn’t budge as we bounced it on its own weight.

I wrote them all down so I had a cut list but if I only have five to do I could have just used the on-board memory. I also used it to measure between posts for safety rails on a deck building job. I could have done this with a tape but again it was much easier with the laser distance measure.

What I Used The Most!

The features I found myself using the most are the basic measurement function and the memory recall. But there are quite a few useful functions on this tool.   Such as I’d love an inclinometer but this is just not a feature you find at this price point. You’d need to spend a lot more to get that feature. The lack of inclinometer means that for accurate measurements you need to be sure that you’re not measuring at a diagonal. This is not necessarily easy to eyeball with a small device like this. This is especially true when taking indirect measurements with the Pythagorean Theorem function.

But the sides of the tool are nice and flat so it’s easy enough to hold your torpedo level up to the side of it and make sure you’re getting the level or plumb measurement you need.

I also found that some regularly used functions took a few steps to access (like the memory). I think if you use this tool regularly it should get to be second nature but I’d prefer a tool that has a more intuitive interface, especially for accessing the memory function. The handy quick reference fits into a pocket in the belt pouch and gives you an easy read guide to most of the tools functions.

Milwaukee

Dewalt and Craftsman get kudos for the non-blister-pack packaging, and Ryobi gets a demerit for its instructions that come on one huge sheet of paper like a fold-out road map.

It has a mode button that allows you to choose to measure from the bottom of the unit or from the top. It measures up to 150 feet, with an accuracy of 3/1of an inch. It operates on two AA batteries.

The tab then flips straight out so the unit fits into a tight corner when measuring diagonals. A mode button tells the unit to measure from the top, the bottom, or the tip of the extended tab. The Tek will measure distances up to 19feet, with an accuracy of 1/1of an inch, and offers about 2,000 measurements per charge. Includes the battery and charger.

The Bosch has four different measuring reference point choices: measuring from the bottom, the top, the end of the extension pin, and the center point, where the tripod socket mount is located. This unit operates on four AAA batteries, with a life of approximately 30,000 individual measurements. Measures up to 230 feet, with an accuracy of 1/1of an inch.

Leica Disto X3Laser Distance Measure

For the most versatile digital meter, it is worth for the price, especially when you need a high degree of metering precision. Turning The Unit On and Off

Once the battery is correctly installed, most brands of wireless digital thermometers simply require users to engage the trigger mechanism in order to turn the unit on and begin operation. An automatic shut-off feature is typically included in all models which will turn the unit off after a set period of time (usually between and 1seconds).

Selecting Unit of Measurement

Infrared thermometers typically allow users to be able to change the unit of temperature between Celsius and Fahrenheit subject to their individual requirements. If using a single laser pointer to assist with aiming, it is important to note that some models set the laser a small distance from the center of the temperature measurement. With a dual laser pointer, the area in between the laser dots will often be the spot where the unit will take its measurement. As there are slight differences between models, it is recommended that users review the instruction manual prior to operation to ensure that they will be taking the temperature measurement from the correct area.

One of the first considerations a prospective buyer of an infrared thermometer should take into account is the range of temperatures that the unit is able to measure. Obviously if the thermometer is unable to read temperatures of the upper or lower limits required by the end user then it will not be suitable. Just stay away from anything that looks a laser pointer as these system are legally limited to 5mW. Class 1m lasers are limited to 500mW (the same as a class 3b) but can not cause eye damage unless the laser is focused through a lens. Therefor, a class 1m can be 100 times stronger than a class 2.
