car polisher Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy car polisher, right? No!

Car Wash Tips to Care for the Paint

Dishwashing detergent contains a higher concentration of salt and strong chemicals that are harmful to the paint, rubbers, and plastic trim in the long term.

As for washing detergent Bowden says the best car wash products are those with formulations that are pH balanced to be gentle on the paint, don’t contain strong chemicals, with a layer of lubrication and good soapsuds to keep grime suspended and away from scratching the paint. For him, a good quality detergent serves a dual purpose in reducing the damage from the elements and adding a layer of protection to the paint surface.

When asked how often should you wash your car, and can you wash your car too much with any risk of damaging it? Bowden assures that as long as the proper preparations are taken beforehand and the correct steps are followed, there really shouldn’t be any risk of damaging the paint from multiple washes.

Snow foam should be left to sit for three to four minutes to break down any grime that can scratch the paint surface during the wash.

Proper car washing techniques

Besides getting a proper microfibre wash pad or mitt, and a good quality car wash detergent, Bowden recommends having two buckets ready, one with fresh ‘soft’ water for rinsing, and another for the detergent mix. If your buckets permit, it is good to fit them with a grit guard to safely trap any dirt particles and grime that gets washed off the car, and prevents it from mixing with the washing liquids and being splashed back on the car.

Every wash should start with a thorough rinse, although for more fastidious enthusiasts, Bowden says they can start off a wash with a pre-washing using a pH balanced ‘snow foam’ formulation, such as their Snow Job. The snow foam is sprayed over the car and left to sit for three to four minutes to breakdown any grime that can scratch the paint surface during the wash, before being rinsed off.

With any loose dirt and soil washed off the body, the car wash detergent can now be applied with a microfibre wash mitt or pad starting from top to bottom (cleanest to dirtiest parts of the car) to ensure any dirt left behind doesn’t get moved onto the cleaner parts of the car during the washing process.

Though chamois is effective at soaking up water,  scratches can occur when it gets dragged over sections of grime that were missed in the process of washing. “Avoid washing the car with circular motions as this may leave swirl marks if the dirt isn’t completely rinsed off. Instead run your wash mitt or towel along the body in a lateral direction to wipe away the remaining dirt,” says Bowden.

Bowden also advises using an electric blower to remove any pockets of water in hard to reach nooks and crannies, such as the wing mirrors housings, may contain water that could allow rust to form. Also after a wash Bowden recommends taking the car for a short drive to draw out any remaining pockets of water.

An electric blower can be used to remove any pockets of water in hard to reach nooks and crannies.

How to wax a car

Once the paint surface has been thoroughly cleaned and prepared, Bowden recommends giving it a coating with a quality carnauba wax. These sort of waxes are one of the best car wax around as it provide a more naturally based paint protection that is ideal in the harsh Australian environment, as well as adding a wonderful glowing shine. In order to work the wax into the paint, the car’s surface must be kept cool and out of the sun during the whole process.

The wax should be applied to a panel at a time. Start by smothering the wax completely over an applicator pad before lightly applying it on the body in circular motions. Once spread over the whole body, and left to dry for around a minute, it will form a light dry haze over the paint surface.

Wax is best applied with an applicator pad in circular motions.

There should be no wax residue remaining once buffing is complete, leaving a good shine to the paintwork.

Elhosary

Yes, the job of selecting a buffer that is suited for your needs and your expertise is not simple or a cake walk. It requires browsing through several reviews on various online websites and stores to narrow down that one gadget that will make life easier for the car enthusiast.

We have done the hard work and narrowed down your choice to four of the best orbital buffers in the market. Read on and make an informed choice.

Performance

The 742XP comes with a motor that produces 6,800 oscillations per minute. This powerful motor increases the ability of the buffer to remove scratches and provide deeper polishing.  The free rotating spindle assemblies make sure there is an even distribution of heat and prevent burning of the paint. Thus despite, its power the Porter Cables perfectly safe for the paint on your car. When you use this machine you will not have to deal with unsightly swirl marks often a result of poor buffing job.

Wool Ingestion Shield

The bane of all buffers is ingesting wool during the buffing process leading to costly repairs and maintenance. But the Dewalt comes with a wool ingestion shield which prevents the wool from clogging the machine thereby increasing the durability and performance of the machine.

Multi-Use

The Dewalt is a beast that is heavy. It is difficult to hold a 10.2-pound buffer for a long period without straining your shoulders and hands. To overcome this disability the makers have ensured that the handle can be used in multiple positions.

At this point we usually provide a list of important features, but with these scratch removers, there really is only one important consideration: does it remove scratches? As all bar a couple use the same method – the abrasive one where the particles become smaller as you work – we can safely say each does the job, although some claim to do it better than other.

As for price, while it is always a consideration, the difference in price between these is minimal – none, for example, are greater than £20 – so you really need to be looking at them in terms of the job they do and how they do it, rather than in cost.

Let’s Wrap It Up

Which do we recommend? Well, the only one that claims to deal with deep scratches is the Quixx product, number 10, so if that is the problem you are dealing with, that’s your choice. For surface scratches, the choice is yours, as all of these come from known brands with great reputations, hence you really can’t go wrong. We’d recommend you leave out number – the scratch remover pen – as it is a far from permanent solution, so the pick of the rest if up to you.

TORQ BUF501X 10FX Random Orbital Polisher Kit

Designed for a smooth and easy experience; the TORQ 10FX has an advanced vibration reduction system that can make polishing a fun job. Powerful as well as fast, this TORQ polisher is a great fit even for professionals, who will be able to work longer without much strain thanks to the advanced vibration reduction system.

The TORQ 10X also has a digital display and speed control buttons, which make for a more precise job.

Flex XC3401VRG Positive-Drive Rotary-Orbital Polisher

If you are looking for power, this Flex model might be just what you were searching for. This thing is for the serious car detailing enthusiast and not just the casual home detailer.

Another interesting aspect of the Flex XC 340VRG Polisher is its orbital rotation. This polisher was designed to simulate the same movement human hands would make while polishing.

The D-handle is also great for lefties since it is designed with ambidextrous control in mind.

The speed level remains constant thanks to the units Digital Torque Management (DTM) feature. Adjusting the polisher’s speed is also as easy as it gets for users of this Meguiar model. All it takes is a flick of your thumb to change the speed from 3000 to 7500 orbits per minute.

Rupes LHR21ES Big Foot Random Orbital Polisher

Just like they brought Ferrari to the world, the Italians also brought this polisher to America. The Italian engineered Rupes Big Foot Polisher has a powerful 500 watt motor as well as several features that make it an elegant and reliable polisher.

A key feature of the Rupes Big Foot Polisher is its anti-spinning technology, which prevents high-speed rotations that otherwise could scratch the car. With a 2millimeter throw, the Rupes Big Foot Polisher can correct defects at a smoother and faster pace than a conventional dual action polisher.

Overall, operation is smooth and this is a high performance car polishing machine. This professional grade polisher is easy enough for detailing enthusiasts to use at home, but it also performs well enough to be trusted by detailing pros.

Polishers

Polishers are found in homes, workshops and in the utility closets of businesses of all types. Whether to return marble flooring to its lustrous, reflective state, finish slabs of granite to be used for new countertops or buff out a coat of wax on a car, polishers have many purposes. Despite the variety of applications, polishers essentially perform the same basic task: to give a dull, cloudy surface a brilliant finish. Virtually all materials are polishable. That includes every type of flooring such as hardwoods, linoleum, concrete, granite, marble, ceramic tile, vinyl, brick and laminate. In addition, plastic, fiberglass, porcelain, acrylic, glass and every kind of metal can be polished given the right tool and solution.

Floor Polishers

Floor polishers are most commonly used to brighten the appearance of the flooring surface in grocery stores, banks, government buildings, schools and anywhere else, public or private, with ample solid flooring that sees a lot of foot traffic. After days of use, floors get scuffed, stained, dirty and dull. Floor polishers go over the surface quickly and efficiently, giving it a brand-new, sparkly clean look. In the home, too, floor polishers come in handy, although commercial and residential floor polishers differ in terms of price and design.

Car Polishers

Another frequently used polisher is for automotive, marine and other vehicle applications. Car polishers are smaller, hand-held tools used to apply polish or wax to a car’s exterior. Typically weighing no more than pounds, car polishers are available in AC-powered and cordless varieties. AC-powered polishers offer more torque and can often be used for other purposes. Car polishers come in different shapes and styles including straight-shaft, horizontally-configured polishers and vertical polishers. Standard and random orbit car polishers are two options. Like standard polishers, random orbit units feature a rotating disc which holds the polishing pad, but they more closely imitate the hand-polishing motion. Thanks to an offset backing plate and counterbalance, random orbit polishers feature a jiggling motion during operation that prevents paint burn-through. They also generate less heat, making them easier to use and safer for the car.

Wash first

Kennedy says it’s important to wash the car properly before waxing, using a good quality car wash. A wash and wax type detergent is fine even if applying wax afterwards.

Kennedy advises using the ‘two bucket method’, with one vessel containing the car wash soap and the other just water. This prevents dirt coming off the car from contaminating the soapy solution that’s about to go on it, which could result in scratched or marked paint.

The right gear

A rotary or orbital polisher with a buffing pad will quicken the process but isn’t necessary – most retail polishing products work fine when applying by hand.

Waxing method

When waxing your car avoid doing it in hot sunlight. Ideally you want the paint surface to be cool to stop the polish from drying too quickly which prevents it from bonding to the surface properly.

Use circular motions if applying by hand to one small area at a time. Working on one panel at a time is a good approach.

Kennedy says it’s also important not to rush and let the polish sink in and dry. “You actually need to let the polish dry to let it activate properly, especially the wax because if you put it on and buff it straight off you haven’t allowed enough to let it settle and cure to the surface.

Remove excess wax from non-painted surfaces with a cloth before it hardens and use a brush for nooks and crannies such as badges.

The features and the specifications of a machine determine its price. There are a whole lot of features and specifications that one has to choose from. However, some of the important ones would naturally include the power of the machine that to a extent is indicated by the horsepower of the motor installed.

Another important feature of any buffing machine is its diameter because that defines the length of stroke a machine can have. In simpler words it conveys the area that the machine is capable of buffing in one round. The diameter varies from 12” to 27”, depending on the model. For a small or an average sized home the smaller machine generally solves the purpose and is empowered to buff kitchens and bathrooms. Large commercial buildings need bigger machines and are generally bought by companies that undertake contracts for cleaning of such buildings or big commercial establishments.

For domestic applications a basic model would generally suffice. However, for larger area you need a bigger machine that can cover more floor area in a given time and may have the capacity to deal with stubborn floor stains.

Here are some of the manufacturing companies: Eagle, Hawk, Kent Euroclean, Oreck, Onyx NuSource, and Sanitaire. You may also find it worthwhile to read reviews of these machines and compare the features and performance. That should prove helpful in zeroing your selection of a suitable machine that answers your requirements.

Selecting the Right Floor Buffer

The best type to choose should be on the area that needs cleaning. The smaller the area, the lower the power requirement for your floor buffer.

The size of the right floor buffer for you depends completely on the function you need it to perform.
