electric log splitter Buyer’s Guide
Handles could be longer for easier use
Searching for a powerful gas powered log splitter that’s compact and won’t break the bank? If so, the Champion 90720 7-Ton Compact Portable Log Splitter may be for you. Featuring a low-profile design, never-flat tires, and a convenient handle, it’s as portable and compact as gas log splitters get. In addition to its portability and compact design, however, the Champion 90720 is also equipped with a proven Champion 80cc engine and an auto-return control valve, providing it with a surprisingly quick 20-second cycle time. This allows you to split up to 180 19-inch logs per hour. It also comes with a two-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.
Not ideal for longer logs
The Champion 1002525-Ton Full Beam Towable Log Splitter can just about do it all. Designed for heavy-duty use, it features a 22cc Champion OHV engine, 2tons of force, and an efficient 12-second cycle time, making it capable of splitting large logs with ease. It can also easily switch from horizontal to vertical operation and vice versa to handle a variety of log sizes. When you factor in its dual-log catchers and rugged yet towable design, it’s easily one of the best heavy-duty log splitters for the money you’re going to find anywhere. If you want topnotch splitting performance year in and year out without spending several thousands of dollars, the Champion 10025is definitely worthy of consideration.
Assembly can be difficult for one person
Need a budget-friendly log splitter with pushbutton operation for light seasonal use? The YARDMAX YS0555-Ton Electric Log Splitter may fit the bill. Designed to get the job done without paying too much or requiring much sweat equity, this practical 5-ton electric splitter is an ideal option for light occasional use. The YARDMAX is electric, so it’s quiet and operates with zero emissions as well. That being said, it’s only suitable for logs inches or less in diameter and 20 inches in length. Although larger logs can be split, it may take several passes to do the job of its larger gas counterparts. Operating the YARDMAX also requires two hands, which is good for safety but less than ideal in terms of ease of use. Nonetheless, its lightweight, portable design and surprisingly low price tag make it a solid option for many homeowners.
Would be nice if legs folded for easier storage
The Titan Towable Hydraulic Deluxe 37-Ton Log Splitter w/Log Lift is by far one of the most capable, heavy-duty log splitters being sold today. Not only does it have a massive 420cc engine and a heavy-duty hydraulic system, but also utilizes a fixed blade and 3tons of splitting force to effortlessly cut large logs into four pieces. Talk about getting the job done! The impressive Titan Towable Hydraulic Deluxe also comes with a handy log lift designed to automatically lift thick heavy logs onto the splitting platform, big ports and hoses, and a variety of other great features that make log splitting as easy as can be. If you need to unleash your inner Paul Bunyan and split large logs, this monster of a machine may be the log splitter for you.
Poor assembly instructions
Sometimes bigger isn’t always better, and the Boss Industrial GD16T216-Ton Gasoline Dual-Action Log Splitter is an excellent example of this. While this 6.5-horsepower, 16-ton gas log splitter lacks the punch of some of the other gas splitters in this guide, it splits logs at record pace and allows you to get more done in less time. The Boss Industrial GD16T2is also remarkably easy to use. With one-hand operation, wheels, and a built-in trailer jack, you can wheel it anywhere and split a variety of soft and hardwoods with minimal effort. We don’t condone multi-tasking while splitting logs, but it can be done. If you adhere to the “time is money” credo and don’t have huge hardwoods to cut, it’s hard to go wrong with this impressively efficient splitter.
Heavy beam requires help to lift and assemble
The Goplus 1500W 6-Ton Electric Hydraulic Log Splitter is a great choice for light at-home use. Its six tons of RAM force is capable of splitting most cured softwood logs into 20.4-inch long sections. Plus, it can be adjusted to cut anywhere from 1.inches to 9.inches in diameter. This nifty little electric log splitter is also quite easy to use. It has an efficient design and is made with convenience and portability in mind. That being said, it does require two hands. While this may not be ideal for some, it definitely helps in the safety department. All things considered, if you have smaller logs that need splitting for your home’s fireplace or woodstove, the affordable and efficient electric Goplus will may become your go-to wintertime tool.
Gas Log Splitters
Gas log splitters are the most powerful and offer the best splitting capacity, with many models providing in excess of 20 tons of splitting force. A number of gas log splitters can also be towed using a standard trailer hitch, making them ideal for both personal and commercial use. However, since they’re gas powered, proper ventilation is required for safe use.
Electric Log Splitters
Electric log splitters are less costly than gas-powered models, but they also have less splitting capacity. Although they can be used safely indoors due to their zero emissions. They need to be near an electrical source, limiting their versatility in the field.
Manual Log Splitters
Manual log splitters are more affordable than electric and gas-powered models, but they offer the least amount of splitting capacity. In fact, nearly all model max out at 1tons. Despite having less splitting power, manual log splitters are lightweight, portable, and easy to transport. That being said, they also require more time and effort, making them less than ideal for frequent use.
A Powerful Motor
The motor’s power is what separates one splitter from the other. In a nutshell, the motor’s power dictates how efficient a wood splitter is. The best wood splitter needs to have enough power to cut through hard and wet wood effortlessly.
Besides, a powerful motor guarantees reliability and speed. If you’re an average homeowner who doesn’t do a lot of wood splitting, a machine with a HP motor should serve you well. However, if you have a bigger demand for wood, a machine with a 3.Horsepower motor could be the best option.
Check out the total RAM splitting force, the amps as well as the total horsepower and buy the unit that will adequately fulfill your requirements.
The Diameter Splitting Range and the Log Length
In keeping with performance, the length and diameter that a log splitter can handle also determine how many logs you can split with a specified amount of time.
Choose a machine that can split logs with a diameter of at least inches. As for the length, go for a splitter that can handle logs that are at least 20 inches long. Some models can split logs that are as long as 2inches.
Cycle Times
The faster the log splitter is, the more work it will get accomplished in a short period. Therefore, the best log splitter should have fast cycle times for increased efficiency. Buy a splitter with a cycle time of at least 1seconds for better productivity.
The best way to determine the duration of the cycle time is to check out how long it takes for the ram to return to its original position after splitting.
Sturdy Construction
All steel construction is a must for a wood splitter. A machine’s construction dictates among other things the durability and reliability. You don’t want a splitter that will keep breaking down due to poor construction. A sturdy construction by extension means that the unit can handle elaborate splitting jobs for years to come.
Vertical Log Splitter
Lifting wood onto your machine is cumbersome especially if you have a large woodpile or if the logs are big. A vertical wood splitter is designed to cut through logs while still on the ground. It is the best splitter to use for larger logs that are impossible to lift off the ground or where lifting the logs onto the machine would result in serious injury.
Vertical log splitters have enough power to cut through most types of wood from hardwood to freshly fallen wood. Most models come with the option that allows you to switch between vertical and horizontal splitting.
Tip – To use a vertical wood splitter for long, be sure to sit on a chair or stool so that you don’t have to bend constantly or hurt your back.
Horizontal Log Splitters
Horizontal log splitters are best suited for homeowners who want to split small logs that are light and easy to place on the machine. They are low to the ground, for increased usability. Some models come with an integrated stand while others have a separate stand.
Note that using a stand raises the machine from the ground which means that you have to lift the logs. Nonetheless, you can adjust the stand’s height as per your convenience.
Because a horizontal wood splitter is not as powerful as a gas log splitter, it is ideal for cutting wood meant for fireplaces, stoves, and burners. It handles low volumes of firewood and will work well with small logs with a diameter of 1inches and a length of 2inches.
If you’re splitting hundreds of logs each year, a horizontal splitter could as well be your best option. It is worth noting that this type is compact in size which means that you can use it indoors and outdoors. Most horizontal log splitters run on electricity.
Popular Log Splitter Brands
Brand loyalty exists across the board, irrespective of which product you’re talking about. Nonetheless, some brands are more trusted and popular than others. The same goes for log splitters. Just go through wood splitter reviews across various manufacturer websites and you will get the feel than some log splitter brands are more sought after than others.
The question then becomes; does it matter the log splitter brand that you choose? Well, to some extent it does. Some brands are associated with innovativeness and high-quality machines.
For instance, you’re better off with a brand that has been existence for long and one that has carved a name for itself in the industry than with a brand that is just starting out.
Well-established brands have passed the test of time and more likely to give you value for your money. That said, here is a breakdown of the most popular log splitter brands in a bid to help you make an informed decision when buying your unit.
Pow ‘R’ Kraft
Pow ‘R’ Kraft plies its trade in Creswell, Oregon. The company is known for producing heavy duty and powerful log splitters. The 65577-Ton 1amp 2-Speed Electric Log Splitter has proved to be a hot favorite among customers and remains the brand’s best-selling model to date.
The durability of Pow ‘R’ Kraft log splitters has also endeared it to customers. As a matter of fact, the makers of this brand promise that your machine will work for a lifetime as long as you maintain it properly. According to Magneto Power – the makers and owners of the Pow ‘R’ Kraft brand – it is the company’s aim to provide quality products at the best value to the industry. The innovativeness that goes into making their log splitters further demonstrates this motto.
On their official website, Magneto Power says that value to them means integrity and an excellent customer service desk. If Pow ‘R’ Kraft sticks by these stands, there’s no doubt it will remain a brand to reckon.
Champion Power Equipment
Champion Power Equipment has been around for some time, and it’s not surprising that its log splitters are one of the most sought after. Champion Power Equipment is synonymous with reliability and durable log splitters designed and engineered in the United States for the North America and world markets. Their hydraulic logs splitter is not only one of the most powerful but also the fastest.
Customer service plays a significant role in creating brand loyalty. According to most customers, Champion Power Equipment has a legendary customer service staffed in the United States and Canada to ensure speedy resolving of customer complaints. In other words, Champion Power Equipment knows how to keep satisfied customers coming back for more.
WoodEze
Even though WoodEze has not been around for long, it has managed to attract a sizeable number of customers and is well on its way to becoming one of the leading log splitter brands. Judging by the number of features and the amount of work that has gone into designing the WoodEze 7-Ton – Speed – Electric Log Splitter – LS75-O, the unit could as well be in the contention for the best electric log splitter.
According to WoodEze, the LS75-O is way heavier built and more powerful in comparison to other electric firewood splitters in the same category.
Woodeze operates from Roscommon, Ireland. While the LS75-O is their first electric log splitter ever to launch on the market, the company has been in existence for more than three decades, manufacturing and distributing high-quality firewood racks in the United States and Canada.
If you’ve bought power tools before, the chances are that you must have come across the brand name WEN. Yes, this is the same company that has been designing and distributing affordable power tools for decades. Established in 1951, WEN initially made a mark in the industry by helping put power to power tools.
Back in the day, WEN’s research and development team played a critical role in helping develop an assortment of common everyday tools such as the chain saw, electric jigsaw, wet wheel sharpeners and the electric engraver. The company even pioneered the random orbital technology used in most polishers and waxers.
Since then, WEN’s expertise has expanded, and they are now the makers of one of the most popular electric wood splitters, the WEN 56206-Ton Electric Log Splitter.
Recommendation
With a maximum log size of 19.inches and a cycle time of 20 seconds, the Champion Power Equipment 90720 log splitter doesn’t have the specs to stack up against some cheaper electric models (including the Powerhouse XM-380), but what it’s lacking in specs it more than makes up for in power. This log splitter can take some hard wood and heavy logs, but its 80cc engine and low-to-the-ground design make it easy to use.
Electric Vs Gas Log Splitters
In terms of performance, electric and gas log splitters are similar: they’re both infinitely more powerful, more efficient and faster than manual axes and mauls.
However, electric log splitters are generally considered to be better for your health. This is because when gas is used to power a log splitter, it emits fumes into the air which are harmful when inhaled in large amounts.
In general, electric log splitters also require less ongoing maintenance, including oil filter changes, refuelling and thorough cleaning.
Despite the fumes and the maintenance required, gas log splitters do have many advantages over electric ones. They can be used outdoors – and you can take them much further afield than just your backyard. Providing that you have enough fuel, you can keep splitting wood forever, even if you’re in the middle of nowhere.
Grizzly H8171
This 110-volt splitter is able to split logs between 1and 20 inches and up to inches in diameter. It comes with built-in wheels for easy movement around your garage or basement. Customers say they have been impressed by its performance especially considering that it is quite small, but its 5-ton hydraulic pressure is just what you need to get the job done. Its total shipping weight is 1pounds.
Woodeze 4-ton Electric wood splitter
This splitter will take on just about any log within the 3x 1x 20 dimension. At just 9pounds, it is very portable. Just like all electric splitters, you can use it within enclosed spaces and not have to worry about smoke, and it is not noisy either.
Log Splitter- Ton Electric Powered Light Weight
With tons of splitting force and 1amp motor, it is no surprise that is can take on logs up to 20 inches long and 1inches in diameter. It is guaranteed to last and comes with a 2-year warranty from the manufacturer. It is efficient, safe and portable.
WEN 56206-Ton Electric Log Splitter
It features a log guide to keep the logs on track to be split. The tons ensure that it has enough force to split just about any log of up to inches in diameter. To ensure safety, two hand operation is required. If you remove a hand, the RAM will return to its position. This is indeed a safe, reliable log splitter for domestic use.
Quite expensive
The Sun Joe LJ10M Logger Joe is a manual log splitter with a durable steel construction that should withstand the occasional bump or scrape. It has a simple yet effective design that allows it to cut logs of up to 18-inches long and 8-inches wide. A powerful hydraulic ram helps build up 10-tons of driving force and while the pump is quite small, it’s deceptively powerful. It also has two-speed variations which help to split the logs without choking them. Use is made easier by the presence of handles but these could be made longer as they’re uncomfortable to hold when crouching over.
Not very powerful
Make sure you’re wearing the appropriate safety gear which includes goggles, gloves, and appropriate footwear.
Your log splitter should always be placed on flat, even ground.
Don’t operate your log splitter in poor weather conditions such as snow or rain.
Gas log splitters should only be operated in well-ventilated areas.
Ensure that you have enough lighting. Don’t work in the dark.
Be careful where you place your hands. There are log splitters that require you to have two hands on the controls in order to operate the equipment. This is safer.
Other factors to consider
Safety definitely comes first! And now that we’ve addressed that, we can take a look at some of the more exciting things to consider when you’re looking at purchasing a log splitter.
Log length and diameter: Log splitters come in varying sizes and that means that the log length and diameter they can accept varies too. This determines how much work you can get done. It’s always better to overestimate how much wood you’ll need to split rather than underestimate and end up with equipment that is too small. For most medium-duty projects, try to find a log splitter than can handle 20-inches in length and 12-inches in diameter.
Portability: The importance of portability can really vary from person to person. If you’re only ever going to be using a log splitter in one place, maybe it’s an essential factor. But if you need a log splitter for different work sites then you’ll want something that is portable. The least portable log splitters are gas splitters. These are the biggest and heaviest. However, as is the case with electric splitter, it is possible to tow them. And unlike electric splitters, you don’t have to hook them up to electricity. The lightest log splitters are manual but whether you buy one of these really depends on how much power you require.
Cycle times: Keep an eye for the cycle time of whichever log splitter you have in mind. The cycle time refers to the amount of time it takes for the equipment to split the log. The advantage of having a quick cycle time means that you can get more work done in less time! 1seconds is a fairly respectable cycle time and some quality log splitters can be as quick as seconds.
Construction: The very best log splitters (particularly gas splitters) aren’t super cheap and that’s because they’re built to last. You don’t want to buy a very cheap splitter that has issues within the first months of use. Look for a splitter that has an all-steel construction to ensure that you’ll get many years of trouble-free use out of it. It may not seem attractive to pay more at the outset but if you’re getting a better quality product, the investment can be returned if it lasts a long time.
Warranty: A long warranty is usually a sign of a quality product. If a manufacturer is confident enough to provide a or 3-year warranty, it means that they have confidence in the durability of the product. When you’re spending good money on heavy equipment such as a log splitter (particularly if it’s gas or electric), you should look to have at least a or 3-year warranty for peace of mind. By checking online reviews, you can find out if the manufacturer in question respects the warranty and helps consumers when issues do arise.
Key Features
Did you know that it is possible to split over 100 log pieces without subjecting yourself to any headaches or backaches? Well if you didn’t know now you know. You simply have to get an electric log splitter to do the work for you and in this case it would be the Powerhouse XM-300Since such a delicate machine needs to have some extra safety measures so that one can prevent any accidents from occurring, this log splitter is built with two handles where one is able to comfortably place their hands without having to worry about getting hurt as the logs get split. It is built with a capacity of splitting woods that have a maximum length of 20 inches and a maximum diameter of 1inches. With such measurements, you will be in a position to cut through the logs in your homestead and come up with the relevant wood especially when lighting a bonfire.
The Power
For Log Splitting, you need to deal with different tough as well as wet wood and thus your tool should have power to deal with all these different types of logs. Depending upon your requirement, if you will be dealing with toughest woods you must have a log splitter with enough power to deal with it. Factors that must be considered include horsepower, amps, force etc.
The Speed
This can only be confirmed by the cycle times of the machine. A machine with fast cycle times translates to the splitter been able to split more pieces of logs within a short period of time. A machine with a cycle speed of 1seconds can be considered to be among the fast machines and that should the range you use determine whether the splitter you want to buy is ideal for your needs or not.
Source Of Power
Just like its name suggests, it uses electricity as its source of power. With this feature, you are guaranteed an opportunity to continuously use it for you entire log splitting needs without having to worry about the machine running low on battery or even the gas exhausting. As the machine uses electricity as its source of energy, it is important that you also note that it requires a standard 120 Volt Output thus it perfectly fits well to the normal household current and you will not be required to fix any new currents to support it.
Easy To Move
Most of the splitters are built with the portability feature. Most of them have two wheels at the front and comfortable handles for one to place their hands. These two features provide the user with the opportunity to easily move the machine to another place where they would like to undertake their log splitting activities.
Easy To Operate
They are easy to use. The comfortable handles built with these log splitters ensure that your hands are far off from where the logs are been cut. Just in case you have never used this machine, you will still experience an easy time using the machine since it comes with a manual guide. On the usage part of it, it is also important to note that the machines are safe for anyone to use. These features make these electric log splitters ideal for anyone wishing to have a best log splitter for money.
Faster Log Splitting
Since they are built to only use electricity energy, they are built with very powerful electric motors. These motors are capable of splitting logs at a relatively faster speed as compared to the other types of log splitters. With a cycle time of 1seconds it has the abilities to split pieces of logs without you even noticing it. Most of them are able to split pieces of logs with maximum lengths of 20 inches and maximum diameters of 1inches. With these measurements you can easily put your logs into it for splitting.
Long Life
Whenever anyone is buying any machine, the first question is to confirm their durability. Electric log splitters are built with steel which makes them not only strong but also last long. With this feature, the users of this machine are guaranteed an opportunity to enjoy the benefits associated with the use of these products for a long period of time as compared to those that are not built from steel.
Gas Log Splitters
These types of splitters are difficult to use but they are desirable for offering huge splitting capacity. You can split even toughest log with these splitters. These are usually bulky in size but are appointed with a trailer that makes them easy to transfer from one place to another. These bulky tools are usually capable of handling around 3tons of logs. Because of their huge splitting capacity, these types of log splitters are the most expensive ones. An important consideration for using log splitter is to have proper ventilation of harmful gas fumes that these tools produce.
Manual Log Splitters
If you are tight on budget and are looking for something really affordable, you can opt for manual wood splitters. You can find varied styles of manual splitters available in the market. They are appointed with a speed pump that enables you to control speed. So you can change and adjust speed according to your job requirement. With manual machines, you can find some really light weight portable ones that user can easily take to the place of work. The only drawback is that these require more efforts from users and consume a lot of time in comparison to other two types. A manual splitter may not be suitable for dealing with huge stock of logs. Check out some of the manual log splitters here.
Choosing The Right Splitter For The Job
If you are searching for a log splitter with a high splitting capacity, you would want to consider the gas log splitters. These tend to offer the highest amounts of splitting capabilities- going up to 3tons (depending on the model you pick).
An electric log splitter too can give you enough splitting power to complete the project, depending on the sizes of the logs you intend to split. Most electric log splitters deliver a range from 4-tons of cutting power.
Manual log splitters are the least costly of the three varieties of log splitters available. They can offer you up to tons of manual splitting power.
Let’s take a closer look at the specific features that come with each log splitter model to help you make an informed decision.
Vertical Log Splitters
Vertical splitters are oriented in a way so all you need to do is roll a log beneath the ram, and then activate the splitter to split the wood. No heavy lifting is required which makes these types ideal for heavy, bulky logs. Once the logs are split, you can easily throw the chunks into a pile or a wood bin.
Cycle Time
The cycle time is how fast the splitter ram travels from one side to the other. This directly equates to how quickly a splitter can split wood. The fastest cycle times are in the three to five second range, which, theoretically means that you can split a log in every three to five seconds.
Tonnage Pressure
The tonnage pressure is how much force the splitting ram exerts on the log to be split. Different woods require different amounts of pressure for them to split effectively, so naturally greater the tonnage, the easier the work will be. You must also take into account the size of the log to split.
What you’re going to use a log splitter for will depend on the type to get. Just remember, if you are primarily splitting smaller diameter logs, a six to ton rated splitter will be all you need. For splitting 20-plus diameter logs, get the most tonnage splitter that you can afford, and if need be, sacrifice cycle time speed for brute force.
Weekend Warriors
If you’re going camping and need a few logs split for a campfire, a log splitting axe, or other manual wood splitting method will be more than adequate. Certainly a powered wood splitter will make the job easier, but it may not be worth the cost if you’re only going to need it a couple of times per year for campfire wood.
How It’s Powered
Each of these options presents both advantages and disadvantages. Let’s explore the possibility of a manual log splitter first. The most obvious advantage of this type of log splitter is the cost. Due to the fact that there is no power source in play except for your own muscles, you can pick one up quite cheaply.
However, these can be gruelling to use and will often require a considerable amount of strength. It’s certainly not the type of equipment you’ll want for splitting multiple locks in a short period.
Hydraulic log splitters use a hydraulic pump with oil or old fashioned steam, pushing the splitter through the log. Essentially, it operates like an electric axe. Naturally, you’ll need to pay more for this kind of power, and you will typically find that a hydraulic splitter works with a force of to 3tonnes.
If you have a hydraulic splitter, it will ultimately be powered by petrol or electric. Your preference here is going to be determined by a few factors. How noisy do you want it to be? Electric splitters are certainly quieter than a petrol splitter and as such will be more practical if you are working somewhere like your backyard. However, you also need to consider power.
Format Of Log Splitter
Horizontal splitters are far more common than the upright variety. With a horizontal splitter, the log is put on top of the splitter, and it is then pushed with a wedge into the splitter to slice through it.
Unfortunately, due to the design, you might have trouble getting larger logs hoisted up onto this type of device. For that type of heavier log, there’s a vertical splitter. A vertical splitter can be used by pivoting the equipment and then rolling the log into it. As such, no heavy lifting is needed.
Thus a horizontal splitter will be useful for smaller logs but for the bigger brutes of the forest, you will certainly need to consider a vertical splitter. These are ideally suited for industrial purposes in particular.
If you do select a horizontal splitter, you might want to consider getting a dual action log splitter. This is a fantastic time saver because it can split logs in both directions, allowing you to double the amount of logs you can split and load in a set time.
Of course, the disadvantage is that you will have trouble lifting heavier logs and even smaller logs can weigh quite a lot. That said, you can get a horizontal splitter with a hydraulic lift. This means that you can pick up the log and move it onto the splitter without hurting your back.
I’m sure you’ve heard a story like this before.
As I do a good bit of log splitting each year for our home in the Pacific Northwest his experience piqued my interest. The first thing I discovered is that there are lots of options when it comes to log splitters and many of them are quite expensive.
We can answer all of these questions by quickly determining how you’ll be using your splitter.
There are a few important questions you should ask yourself.
Pros & Cons of Kinetic Splitters
While a hydraulic splitter may offer more force, measured in tonnage, it doesn’t come close to flywheel-based models in terms of speed.
If speed is more important to you, kinetic splitters are tough to beat as they split logs immediately by releasing a great deal of energy in one burst, rather than through a gradual process as is found with hydraulics.
I like to keep things simple. If you like the idea of faster cutting and most of the logs you’ll be working with will be seasoned, a kinetic model is the way to go. If you don’t care about speed so much as being able to cut through whatever the hell you throw on your splitter, go with a hydraulic model.
Kinetic splitters operate with a pinion gear and heavy flywheels. The two parts work as part of the system that stores the energy needed for a split. Activation of the handle releases the energy, this burst of energy immediately splits a log apart.
About six times faster than most hydraulic models, kinetic splitters offer a cycle-time as short as 2.seconds. They use high speed and low force to get the job done efficiently.
If you’re considering kinetic log splitter you need to understand their shortcomings. Yes they work very quickly. But they often won’t work as well on logs with knots or “Y” splits in them. They can also struggle with harder or denser woods as there is no energy to follow up the initial release.
KEY TAKEAWAY
If you’re always splitting seasoned wood, consider an electric or kinetic splitter. For anything else or if you’re unsure, you should consider a gas hydraulic model.
For some people a horizontal splitter is all they’ll ever need. With a horizontal-only splitter the log is placed in the guide, the ram pushes the log against the wedge, resulting in a split.
If you only plan to split small, low-weight logs and have no problem lifting them onto the splitter, a horizontal splitting splitter will work just fine. Horizontal log splitters are ideal for homeowners looking to split small, seasoned logs up to 14-inches in diameter and 21-inches in length.
A good practice to evaluate your needs is to simply look at your woodpile, find the widest log and measure its diameter to determine whether you’ll need a splitter that accommodates horizontal or vertical splitting.
Vertical splitting is more effective in splitting large logs as it will spare your back the pain of hoisting a heavy log atop the splitter. With a log splitter equipped to split a log vertically, you can simply roll the log into the right position and pivot the wood appropriately.
Pros & Cons of Gas Powered Splitters
Gas powered splitters have several notable advantages over electrically powered splitters, power being one of them. If you’re splitting larger, green logs, a gas powered splitter will be much more effective in splitting the wood efficiently.
Since they won’t need to be plugged in, gas models are more portable and will allow you to take your splitter to the farthest reach of your land, if needed. You’ll have a greater range if you need it, with tow-ability being a standard feature. A gas splitter can offer anywhere from to over 3tons which is plenty of force to take on almost any wood splitting project head on.
Require maintenance
When compared with electric models, gas powered splitters will obviously be much louder. Depending on how close your nearest neighbor is, regular use of a gas splitter can certainly strain relations. They also require additional maintenance as you will be required to service the engine as needed and regularly change the oil.
Gas powered wood splitters, although more powerful, tend to be heavier than electric, potentially requiring assistance when being moved. In comparing price points between gas and electric, gas splitters are more expensive and will present a larger upfront cost.
They are less environmentally friendly as they emit potentially harmful gas and cannot be used indoors. Be very mindful when operating a gas powered log splitter in even a partially enclosed space as the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning is odorless but very real.
The SLS2082from Southland Outdoor Power Equipment is a 2ton, gas powered wood splitter. This workhorse has a 208ccOHV engine offering 8.5-foot-pounds of torque. It can easily split even the hardest species of wood, like hickory and maple.
The engine starts on the first pull, allowing you to roll up your sleeves and get started without delay. Maximizing efficiency is simple as the SLS2082boasts a 17-second log split cycle time. Not only will this efficiency help you get the job done faster, but this beast of a machine can also handle logs as long as 2inches in length and 30 inches in diameter in record time.
This gas splitter will outwork electric splitters on the market in terms of packing force and power. Not only is this machine effective, but it’s also efficient too as it is good on gas even after you’ve worked it for hours on end. Its fuel tank holds 0.7gallons of gas, minimizing downtime for refueling.
With a 2-way, steel splitting edge the SLS2082won’t skip a beat. Since it’s been heat treated, the wedge is designed to have an extended life over other splitting edges.
Equipped with both horizontal and vertical splitting capacity, this versatile splitter can accommodate logs both large and small.
Once you’re ready to maximize the tonnage and switch over to the vertical splitting setting, adjusting between the two functionalities is simple and user-friendly. The vertical function will enable you to roll larger logs under it for splitting rather than lifting as you would in the horizontal function.

Equipped with a 208cc Briggs & Stratton 4-cycle gas engine, it is easy to start time and time again. The recoil start starting system, this Briggs & Stratton engine is easy to start on the first pull.
The engine offers both idle control and low oil shutdown. A log opening of up to 2inches ensures that the YardMax YU256can handle large logs as well as small. Working with hardwood with knots in it? No problem. This log splitter will split through it like butter.
A unique U-Beam structural design is currently pending patent and offers added strength when compared to traditional I-Beam designs seen used in other splitters. This improved design places less stress on the beam, improving the life of the machine and its durability.
The structural design isn’t the only feature that makes this product unique, it also has a foot plate pending a patent. This foot plate serves to rotate logs when they are being split and decreases reliance on the beam, improving functionality and helping the user when working with unevenly cut end pieces of wood.
The steel splitting wedge is inches in size, both a two way and four-way wedge are included. Transitioning between a vertical and horizontal position is made easier than ever via a cylinder beam handle.

The Pros and Cons of Electric Log Splitters
An electric model is convenient in that it can be used both indoors and outdoors as it requires no ventilation as compared with a gas splitter. There is no need to be worried about carbon monoxide levels when operating an electrical splitter. No more braving the bitter cold to get some fresh logs to split for the dying fire in your living room.
You won’t have to deal with gas or oil in order to run your electric splitter, but you will have to ensure you’re plugged into an outlet. This reliance on electricity makes them not as portable as gas splitters as they can’t operate as a stand-alone piece of machinery.
Kinetic Log Splitters
This the most advanced splitter to cuts wooden in lightening speed. Compare then another type of splitters the run time of Kinetic log splitter only 2-sec. It uses strong flywheel system which stores energy from the engine to splitting wheels and releases it while cutting logs.
It doesn’t need to wait for the ram to press the log and slice down little by little steadily. Besides, it doesn’t hassle you with hydraulic oil, pumps, etc. the kinetic splitters are a lot easier to maintain. You need to take a tune up the engine, simple.
Powerful engines and starts quickly without any fuss.
The Beam and ram are nice, heavy and built for using lifetime.
All the hoses of the splitter are protected from top to bottom with good wire wrapping.
Very powerful, it splits everything or every type of wood you feed it.
The blade pin of the 4-way blade seems soft which may not survive for a long time.
Very smooth operation and male less sound during work.
Good for splitting small to large almost every kind of woods.
Safe to run because its secure operation prevents your hand gets accidentally get there.
Need both hands to run which seem safe but sometimes annoying while repositioning woods.
Adding additional components
If you get gas powered log splitter, then make sure it has ample gas before adding the hydraulic oil. The next thing is adding oil to the wood splitter. How much oil you should pour is varied model to model. So, read the instruction of your model to figure amount the amount. After that, your machine will be ready to work.
Activate the wedge
After set up and adding essential components you can begin to place a log for testing. First, secure the position of the wood against the wedge. Place the cleaner portion of the log on the edged, so knotty part can’t be an obstructed while cutting. It will not stop the machine but may cause unclear or fractured woods.
Now, locate the lever and pull to trigger piston. It will apply a high pressure using wage and start to break the wood structure into your desired size cleanly. The activation mechanism could be a button to depending on the model.
If you are going to use a manual wood splitter, then this process will be little different. Manual logs include a hydraulic jack on the side of a log splitter. And a welded wedge would be situated on the other side. So, begin with tightening down the jack’s screw to secure the log. After that move the cylinder into position and manually pump the hydraulic jack until the wood chunk cut down. After completing than, releases the screw and push the cylinder in the previous position and do same for next log splitting.
Construction
Check the operating tools, wheel, bench, guide, etc. of the splitter is well made. Also, the wear housing of the machine should well cover. Powerful log splitter meant to be used outside. Even your garage has enough space but uses your gas splitter in the yard. Gas splitter made toxic fume. So, avoid indoor operation with them.
Your best log splitter should be easily transportable. Bulky splitter is robust to shift outside. That’s why they need a strong and durable wheel that glide effortlessly on the grassy, stoned or concrete ground.
Performance
Different types of wood logs need a different kind of splitter to spill. Actually, it is the hardness that requires power performance. Since hardness branch diameter is also an essential factor. Check the diameter limit of your log splitter and calculate what you usually use to split for fire woods. If you often cut 6-10” branches, then a 6-ton log splitter do great. For more diameter, the ton rate will be increased. For the 20+ diameter of logs, 2or more ton of splitter will do fine.
Here is one thing to consider, the green logs. Green logs are those logs which are not seasoned. Usually, this type of woods is hard to cut. If you want to use your house tree branches for cutting, then you have to go for higher tons. A 12” green log need 16-ton log splitter.
In most cases, a brand is the other name of quality. If you want a quality product don’t go for random or unknown brand. Also, many brands offer models with the non-brand engine to lessen the cost. What the engine or motor made from and which name is also a crucial factor. Check this factors very carefully.
Other reasons why I picked it
To protect the hydraulic system of the splitter, the relief valve is inbuilt to prevent malfunctions. When I saw the dead man switch I got amused I just had to ask what it was all about. Apparently, the splitter is automated so that when you release the handle the ram instantly comes to a halt. The fact that you can easily replace the metal strips means that you have nothing to really worry about since you only need to remove them when they are worn out.
Ton Horizontal Log Splitter Wood Cutter
The two-wheeled splitter can be moved around allowing you to work at any spot to your convenience. Though it’s small, it’s built with material sturdy enough to take on ton force without falling apart. Additionally, it offers effortless assembling process which makes it quite reliable.
Woodeze 5MH-S-SPLITTER Super Firewood Splitter
Working as a noise buffer, Woodeze 5MH splitter works efficiently equipped to split wood up to foot long. A camper would immediately fall in love with the 2pounds weight of the splitter that makes light and portable to a number of places.
Reasons why I picked it
The cost of the tool is a basic factor. You don’t have to break an arm and a leg to get a tool when you can get the same one with a better quality from a different company that is within your budget.
Depending on your use, you may want to check the size of the Log splitter. Small log splitters are mostly bought for domestic use while the larger ones are recommended for commercial use where much more wood is used for lumber processes.
Portability is a factor that matters mostly to people who like to travel with the Log splitter for the purposes of cookouts or camping. The smaller the tool the more portable it is.
The rear wheels of the wood chopper come as an advantage. They help in movement of the tool without having to lift it, especially if it is heavy.
Kinetic Wood Splitters
Kinetic wood splitters are another newish take on the wood splitting game, and as the name suggests, these use kinetic technology to cut through any type of log you throw at them. Rather than relying on traditional hydraulic technology, these splitters feature a heavy flywheel system that’s capable of housing energy from the splitter’s components and then releasing it out resulting in a log being split into two.
Fiskars
Ever since 1649, Fiskars has been been creating a wide variety of products for people all over the world. Fiskars was first founded in a tiny village in Finland, but is has since grown up to be one of the top companies for creating products for all areas of life.
Fiskars doesn’t necessarily specialize in wood splitters, but the company has created some of the best mauls and axes that I’ve ever seen. It’s for this reason that Fiskars deserves a place on this list, and it’s a brand that I can gladly recommend to just about anyone who isn’t interested in gas or electric log splitters.
Fiskars X2Super Splitting Axe
After reading through numerous wood splitter reviews, it’s quite clear that the best log splitter around is the Fiskars X2Super Splitting Axe. This splitter does not have gas or electric power, and while that may be a deal-beaker for some, it’s easily one of the best manual splitters you can buy.
So, just what makes this the best wood splitter? For one thing, Fiskars has designed this axe so that you get considerably more one-strike splits than what’s usually found with manual splitters like this. Additionally, the advanced bevel convex blade makes it much, much easier to remove the blade from a piece of wood once you’ve struck into it.
Fiskars covers the X2with a lifetime warranty, and it’s seriously one of the best feeling and handling axes you’re going to find.
Truper 324112-Pound Splitting Maul
Going back to a manual option, the Truper 324112-Pound Splitting Maul is easily the best maul splitter that I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. the 27-inch handle strikes a nice balance of being long enough to get a solid grip on without being too crazy, and the 12-pound weight provides for plenty of power without being too heavy.
This is the most compact of all the log splitters on this list, and for that reason alone, the Truper is definitely worth considering. Having something that you can quickly throw into a bag or back-pack and take virtually anywhere with you is a real game-changer, and while you might be a bit limited as to what you can do with the Truper when compared to something like the DHT 100171, this really isn’t made to compete with something like that.
This is a tool for easily chopping wood that you can also transport virtually anywhere, and in those regards, the Truper soars.
WEN 56206-Ton Electric Log Splitte
Lastly, we’ve got the WEN 56206-Ton Electric Log Splitter. this features the same amount of cutting power as the Goplus at tons, and once again, this is more than enough power for most people reading this guide.
A HP engine is proven to be free of cold starts and gas shortages, and it’s also one of the quietest electric splitters that I’ve ever used. WEN’s built-in log track keeps means that you get a clean, accurate cut every single time, and the two comfort grip handles make hauling this thing around a breeze.
Perhaps the biggest problem with the WEN is its price. While it’s a wonderfully designed and built splitter, the Goplus offers a lot of the same features for a considerably more affordable price.
Manual Log Splitter
Manual log splitters are generally more lightweight and compact power tools that can easily be carried around. They are operated with a two handle system that provide sufficient pressure capacity to split wood. Some manual log splitter is even calm as foot operated instead of hand-operated models. Those foot models can be more fun to work with, and it is nice to know that this log splitter type comes in different shapes and modes of operation to suit a wider audience.
Despite being manually powered, they do not lack power. In fact, most manual log splitters can produce an impressive tons of pressure capacity at the wedge, which is overkill regardless of whether you are splitting hardwood or softwood. It will split it with equal ease.
Electric Log Splitter
Electric log splitters are perhaps the most popular types of log splitters. In general, they are way less than a hydraulic log splitter but more than a manual log splitter. They are very cost-effective and have extremely efficient motors that deliver enough pressure capacity to split even the toughest of wood. They also have one major advantage, they work more silently than gas log split is.
Gas Log Splitter
This log splitter works with fuel and contains either a petrol or diesel motor. The motor is rated in CC (cubic per centimeter) and since organic fuel has such a high energy value, gas log splitters tend to be powerful. However, they are noisy and require frequent maintenance. Furthermore, gas log splitters can output a lot of toxic fumes and is not ideal for use indoors. The only safe place to use a gas log splitter is outdoors, and that too, in a well ventilated space.
Vertical and Horizontal Log Splitter
Vertical and horizontal log splitters can come both as hydraulic or electric types. They offer a lot of versatility and allows you to split wood both in a vertical as well as the traditional horizontal position. The only downside with this type of loudspeaker is that they are generally more expensive. However, the main advantage is that since they are more versatile, they are also much easier to work with.
Electric log splitter vs Gas log splitter
It can be confusing to choose between the electric log splitter and the gas log splitter. After all, it is quite understandable. They both look so much alike. But they have different power and are usually meant for different audiences.
The Pow’ R’ Kraft 6555Electric Log Splitter runs on a 1amp 1.7horsepower electric motor. It can run on an 110-volt household electric outlet, however, the longer the cord, the heavier gauge wire is required. The longer and thinner a wire the more the voltage drops and greater is the potential for long-term danger to the motor windings.
This splitter can cut logs up to 20 inches in length and inches in diameter. It can efficiently handle some woods up to a 12” diameter. The splitter requires two hands on the controls to make a split. The left-hand controls the hydraulic control lever while the right-hand controls the pushbutton switch. The log splitter will stop upon the absence of either hand. Release by both hands is necessary before the splitter will back up to its starting position. Although this is a desirable safety feature, it does limit the ability to readjust a log if necessary while the splitter is in action.
The piston returns to its home position by spring tension, so it is relatively quick. The stand accessory does an excellent job putting the work at a workable height. Because the Pow’ R’ Kraft 6555Log Splitter is electric, it is safe to use it inside a shed or garage with no worry about gas fumes and inclement weather.
ELECTRIC
Electric log and wood splitters are powered by an electrical cord. An electric motor doesn’t require dealing with gasoline, but the tradeoff is that you have to plug it into an 1electrical outlet. The distance the wire extends from the outlet limits where you can operate an electric splitter.
A heavy duty three-wire grounded extension cord will increase the distance you can use the splitter. Don’t try to extend the splitter’s useful range without increasing the capacity of the cord. An extension cord gauge that is underrated for the job can damage the motor. Doing so can drop the voltage and increase the amperage. The internal windings of a motor are insulated to accommodate certain temperatures that the motor is designed to work within. When these are exceeded, damage may occur.
Electric splitters are generally low to the ground. They are constructed with a base plate that cradles the wood. Like other types of splitters, they have an hydraulically driven rod with a wedge on the end that splits the wood.
Most electric log splitters function horizontally, not vertically. They generally range between 4-tons of splitting pressure and are suitable for medium sized tasks.
You should consider an electric log splitter if you want medium performance and price and prefer a splitter that is relatively easy to use without demanding much from you physically.
HOW TO PROPERLY MAINTAIN YOUR LOG SPLITTER
Once you’ve invested in the log splitter that best meets your needs, you will want to keep it operating efficiently over the years. A hydraulic log splitter operates under high hydraulic pressures and depends on several moving parts. Proper maintenance will ensure its prolonged and safe use.
Read the Instructions
To work effectively, all parts of a splitter must function well. Even one malfunctioning component can affect the entire machine. Since each type and brand of splitter is unique, read and follow your hydraulic log splitter owners handbook that will contain instructions for the maintenance of your specific machine.
Gas Powered Splitters
Gas powered splitters are the most powerful option and can split a 24-inch log. This type of splitter also uses the most pressure. Depending on the model, your gas-powered splitter could use between 20 and thirty tons of pressure.
These wood splitters are powered using gasoline, and as a result, they create exhaust when they are in use.
How to Use a Log Splitter
Log splitters are incredibly simple machines. Using a log splitter safely is easy to do, and requires very little work on the part of the user. Exactly how the splitter works depends on the type of machine you have.
Once you have the rounds, select one from the pile. Insert it into the machine with the flat, cut end facing the wedge. On manual splitters, there is a jack you must tighten when the log is in place. This prevents the log from falling out while you are splitting it.
To cut it, manually move the wedge into the end of the log and all the way through to the other end. Reverse this motion and loosen the jack to remove the cut log.
Product Highlights
It houses a mighty 19CC Kohler engine, creating enough torque and force to split knotty woods like ebony, maple, Brazilian walnut and so on. There’s a pin which you need to pull to seamlessly adjust the difficult rounds in the vertical position.
Splitter Size and Hardness Rating
These are the fundamental criterion to assess the quality of a log splitter. The thicker and larger the logs would be, the more tonnage you’ll need. For chopping down oak, pine, maple, consider buying a 30-ton splitter.
A hardness rating between 380-690 lbs. is suitable for softer woods, whereas, you have to opt for a machine rated for 2000-4000 lbs. or higher for hard woods. The drill is to learn about different types of wood, their characteristics to find the best log splitter.
Other Factors
Apart from the above-mentioned specifications, you should also pay close attention to details like motor size, fluid capacity if it’s a hydraulic log splitter, whether the built-in log cradle is available and warranty period. A log splitters is an important investment, therefore, you should stick to a reputed brand. Just in case anything goes wrong with the product, a well-known brand will extend their assistance immediately to resolve the issue.
Common Complaints
The capacity of a log splitter mainly depends on two factors- the size of the log it can split and the amount of pressure it yields. A very common complaint about manual log splitters is that they don’t split hard, large pieces logs properly.
Then there’s oil leak issue. If you’re using a hydraulic splitter, the fluid-carrying hose might get damaged by the course of time. Without the necessary amount of fluid, the machine won’t simply build enough pressure to split logs.
The fuel filter needs to be replaced in every 4-years. Failing to do so will cause engine overheating issue and it will be subjected to overheating. Another bummer could be a blunt wedge. The wedge keeps losing its edge with every splitting session. Make it a point to sharpen each time before you use it.

Remember to give some careful consideration to the right type of log splitter for your needs and lifestyle, and you’ll be well on the way to finding the best log splitter possible to fit your budget and requirements.
Figure Out the Right Size of the Splitter
This is the very first step of shopping for a heavy-duty machine like log splitter and a matter of sheer confusion for the inexperienced customers. Let me try to explain this in as simple terms as possible. The primary thing you should remember by heart while calculating the perfect size of a splitter is your need from the device. Suppose you are looking for a machine for industry-level splitting projects, in this case, a fast log splitter dishing out stupendous force and a bundle of utilities is what you need. On the other hand, on-commercial projects don’t demand that much of force or speed, a manual log splitter of lower tonnage will serve you just right for general splitting tasks.
The most common mistake made by many people is buying a higher tonnage (like 4ton) instead of a lower one because both cost the same. On board, it might seem like a great bang for the buck but nope, it isn’t! Why would a normal person, in his full sense, buy a super-fast, hefty splitter with an impeccably fast cycle time when he won’t ever need to utilize it? Think before you act.
Log Length
20×1inches lumber easily. Top-end models can handle up to 2inches like breeze.
The best wood splitter enforces enough power to sear the toughest of woodpieces like charm. Motor is the mitochondria of these machines. While browsing through the product specs, it’s imperative to check the motor horsepower, amps and RAM splitting force of the product. Tally it with the intensity of your splitting project and determine the precise figures you require from your device.
Wheels and Ball hitches
Portability is one of the most sought after features in any utility device. It allows you to drag a bulky device from one place of the job site to another with minimal effort. Almost every branded splitter features a pair of wheels to help you roll your machine to different location without shedding much sweat. Ball hitches are another very useful addition which comes to play when you need to haul your wood splitter. However, these particular machines are not built for handling the hassle of frequent traveling.
Brand value
There are several logical reasons why the smartest customers are brand conscious. Well-recognised brands always provide an assurance of 100% genuine quality. In order to maintain their reputation in the market, popular brands administer the best technologies and rigorous quality tests on each and every product to ensure optimal customer satisfaction. Besides this, branded goods are always backed by warranty. If you face any issue with your purchased item, the company will immediately probe into the matter and get it fixed for you as soon as possible. This valuable reliance and customer support is something unknown brands fail to provide. Attractive price tags and too-good-to-believe features are temporary, class is permanent.
Electric Log Splitters
Electric log splitters are undoubtedly the most popular in the industry owing to their performance and compact size. If you’re an occasional wood burner, having a splitter of this sort will be enough for your needs. These machines essentially function the same way as gas splitters, with the exception being electric motor powering the hydraulics in this case.
There is also an enormous amount of flexibility that can be of help because you can set the splitter either on a bench, on a stand, or at the ground level. Moreover, electric splitters are more cost-effective because you don’t need to spend on gas to keep them functioning.
Apart from portability, another great feature of these machines is that you can literally use it anywhere you want. Whether it is indoors or outdoors, electric splitters are ready to be used as long as there is a standard electrical outlet available. Hate working on maintenance? Then relax, because the splitters don’t need as much of attention as their gas counterparts.
Appropriate Branch Diameter
One of the important aspects that you must bear in mind is the average branch diameter that you intend to cut. This is crucial because you must choose the appropriate splitter for the job. Generally, a 4-ton splitter should be adequate if you’re used to cutting branches from the trees in your yard.
However, to chop down larger and thicker branches, you might need to choose a machine that goes up to 30 ton. Choosing the correct wood splitter will determine the difference between success and failure, which is why you need to ensure you know what you’re buying.
Hardness Rating
The hardness rating of a log splitter determines the speed and efficiency in which it can cut through woods. To understand what splitter rating you need, think about the logs you work with on a regular basis. For softer woods that you’d usually find on trees nearby, a splitter having a hardness rating of 600 pounds should be enough.
Currently, you can purchase log splitters that have a maximum hardness rating of 2200 pounds and are perfect for splitting harder woods such as elm, dogwood, and hickory.
Horizontal or Vertical
Log splitters are mostly positioned in two ways – horizontal or vertical. The horizontal splitter requires you to place the log on a flat surface, while the vertical splitter allows you to push the logs in from the top down. Hey, you can even buy a splitter that functions both ways as manufacturers are now making combo splitters as well.
Manual vs. Gas vs. Electric Splitter
Next, you need to decide what type of splitter you want to buy. To get an in-depth analysis on this section, please refer to the previous section of our guide, “types of log splitters.” But to explain, in short, your choice should always be based on the kind of would you want to chop, the preferred mode of power, and the overall budget.
Cycle time
The cycle time denotes how much time a splitter takes to cut through a log. This feature varies according to the size and efficiency of a splitter, with smaller units taking as low as to seconds to cut through small branches and larger units taking up to 20 seconds for big logs.
Use it indoors or outdoors
In the mood to split some wood when it’s snowing or cold outside? Then an electric log splitter is just what you need. With this type of splitter, you don’t have to worry about the buildup of carbon monoxide, which makes this choice especially useful for people living in colder regions.
Splitting wood in the garage, barn, or a semi-enclosed porch is not a good option for gas models due to the toxic fumes. However, a splitter having an electric motor will be both safe and comfortable. Electric log splitters are also suitable to be used outside, and all you need is a heavy duty extension cord that connects to a power plug.
No Risk of Spills
Because electric splitters do not require any gas or oil, you’ll never be at the risk of experiencing hazardous spills. Gas and oil spills are not only messy but highly flammable! One wrong move at the wrong time can mean a disaster for you and your family. Stay on the safer side; get an electrically operated log splitter. Besides, you have much more choices in electric variants than with any other variety of log splitter.

Unless you’re a Paul (or Paula) Bunyan bursting with muscles and handy with an axe, sledge hammer, and steel wedge, you’re going to need mechanical help to chop logs for firewood. Joe is here to help you find the right log splitter solution to chop your chores in half.
The power of a log splitter is measured in tonnage
Log splitters come in many sizes and power ratings. Of particular note, log splitters vary widely in the length of log it can split, as well. It is absolutely essential to read the manufacturer’s specifications before you make an investment. ***Seasoned Logs (aged more than a year) are much easier to split than newly fallen “green” firewood. As a rule of thumb, if a splitter is rated to split a 12” diameter seasoned log, you can figure that it can handle only a 10” green log. Again, check the manufacturer’s specifications.
Gas Powered Log Splitters
Gas splitters are the tool of choice for professionals – loggers, tree services and landscapers. Gas-powered splitters generally work on a vertical axis. Gas-powered splitters are more powerful than their electric counterparts, but that power comes at a price. Gas powered splitters manufactured by companies like Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Powerhorse, Homelite, Powermate, Champion, Ariens and Swisher come at an 8X – 20X price point compared to electric. They also are much heavier, and won’t fit in your shed. Storage of gas-powered machinery inside a garage is also a safety hazard. Top gas models can, however, cut logs up to 24” or more.
Gas Powered Log Splitter
Like it says on the box, these splitters are gas (or diesel) powered. This means that the pump that creates the hydraulic pressure is driven by a motor that runs on gas.
The main advantages these units have over the electric log splitters are power and the fact that they can be used anywhere. While electric log splitters top out at about 20-tons splitting force, gas powered wood splitters are generally in the 20-ton to 45-ton range.
If you’ve got some seriously thick pieces of hard wood then you’re going to want to go with the gas powered option.
Remote use is also a big factor. As long as you’ve got gas and a way to get it there, a gas powered splitter can be used anywhere.
The main drawbacks of using a gas wood splitter are the noise, fumes and maintenance. Standing next to one of these splitters for a whole day is not going to do your ears any favors.
The fumes from the exhaust are also not exactly healthy so indoor use is out of the question.
As with all gas engines, you’re going to need to do some oil change and spark plug maintenance from time to time. That being said, there’s nothing quite like a top rated gas log splitter to make short work of a pile of logs. This 25-ton log splitter from Champion is the best gas powered log splitter for the money.
Champion 1002525-Ton Gas Log Splitter
This 25-Ton gas log splitter from Champion Power Equipment is our top rated choice for anyone looking for a mid-size gas wood splitter. It’s the newer version of the previous 22-ton model (92221) and is the best log splitter in its class.
If you check out other reviews of the previous model and this new and improved one you’ll see that we’re not the only ones who think it’s great. It looks the same as the previous model but they’ve upped the splitting force a bit and reduced the price. It’s powered by a reliable 224cc engine that starts first time with minimal effort.
It can be used as both a vertical and horizontal splitter and switches quickly and easily between modes. It comes with log catchers included. The quick 1second cycle time and auto-return function means you’ll be able to work really quickly with this machine. Champion say that it can achieve 300 cycles per hour.
Woodeze Impact Manual Log Splitter
The manual hydraulic log splitter has long levers that convert your muscle power into hydraulic pressure. These units can actually deliver some decent splitting force with the good units getting up to 10-tons.
It does take some effort but if you’re only ever splitting a small pile of logs then the money you save makes it totally worth it. If you want to retain some of the zen aspect of wood splitting then using one of these can be very satisfying as well as effective.
Tonnage
Log splitters have their splitting force indicated in tons. This is a measure of how much pressure the ram can exert on the log when pushing it up against the wedge. The amount of force you need is determined by a combination of the diameter of the log, the type of wood and how seasoned the wood is. Here’s a rough guide to give you an idea of the amount of splitting force you’ll need. Firstly we need to know what wood we’ll be splitting. Different woods have different degrees of hardness. To give wood a hardness figure we use the Janka hardness test. It’s not too important to understand how this test works but basically it assigns a hardness value in lbs. The table below shows the hardness values for different kinds of wood.
Auto Return
Once the log is split you need to get the ram back into the start position so that you can load another log. Often this means pressing the lever in the opposite direction so that the ram retracts. If you want to free up your hands and work faster then get a splitter with auto return function. These units will automatically retract the ram once you’ve split the log and let go of the lever. That way you can grab the next log and load it while the ram gets back into position.
Single or handed operation
Single handed units are operated by pushing the lever with one hand to make the ram move forward. This means that your other hand is free to hold the log or, if you get distracted easily, get caught between the log and the moving bits.
Some splitters have an additional safety factor that requires two handed operation. In addition to pressing the lever with the one hand you need to press a button with the other. Some people see this as an inconvenience but when you consider the amount of force you’re dealing with it’s really not a bad idea. It’s not nearly as inconvenient as having less than fingers.
Tonnage or Splitting Force
Most splitters will quote a tonnage to indicate their splitting force. Sometimes this figure is quoted in pounds as well with 2,000 pounds being equivalent to ton. The tonnage gives you an idea of how much force the ram is capable of exerting on the log when it gets up against the cutting edge. The higher the tons the thicker the logs the unit can split.
Two Handed Or One Handed Operation
Safety is always a concern when operating machinery with moving parts. If the machine is designed to cut or split then there’s even more need for caution. A lot of manufacturers design their log splitters so that you have to hold a button in with one hand while pressing the lever with the other hand. The idea is that if both hands are occupied then you can’t get your fingers caught in the moving bits of the machine. Sometimes the location of the lever and the button make two handed operation a little uncomfortable. But these are the safest option.
Single handed operation means just that. Once the machine is on you can get the ram moving forward to split the log by pressing the lever with one hand. This means that the responsibility for keeping your other hand is up to you so pay attention.
Auto Return Function
Some splitters require you to reverse the lever to get the ram to go back to its starting position after splitting the log. The better units will have an auto return function. This means that after splitting the log you can release the lever and the ram will return to the starting position automatically. This really saves you a lot of time if you’ve got a bunch of wood to get through.
How To Season Wood
Logs need to be properly seasoned before trying to split them even if you have the best log splitter in town. There’s a good reason why we use the word “season” to describe the drying out process of wood. It’s because it generally takes a season for the cut logs to get rid of their moisture and dry out nicely. The best way to have seasoned wood today is to have cut it last year. This isn’t something you can rush so make sure that you cut the wood about months before you intend splitting it.
Once you’d cut the logs you need to stack them properly. You want to do this in a way that makes it as easy as possible for the logs to “breath” and get rid of that moisture. Ideall you want to get the logs up off the ground with their ends facing the prevailing wind.
Also, make sure that you don’t stack the logs under trees or a leaky gutter where water will run off onto the logs. If you do that you’ll end up with wood that is wetter than when you cut it.
To give yourself the shortest time to seasoned wood it’s a good idea to fell the trees during winter. This is the time of year when the trees will have their lowest moisture content. During the growing season the trees will have more moisture in them and will take longer to season once cut.
