embroidery sewing machine Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy embroidery sewing machine, right? No!

Free embroidery pattern here.

Sewing machine manufacturers make two groups of machines: those that will be sold only through authorized dealers, and those that will be sold by retailers. Machines made to be sold by authorized dealers are generally heavier and start at a higher price point. If you can afford to spend a little more to buy a machine from a dealer, you’ll usually receive individualized attention before and after the sale and will end up with a great machine.

Know who you are as a sewist. Think about how you work and what you’re likely to sew. Will you be decorating a home? Making children’s clothing? Quilting? Your projects may change as you develop and change as a sewist, but you likely know yourself well enough to make a pretty good guess. Knowing your individual style will help you decide what features are most important to you.

Look for flexibility where it matters. Most machines on the market today have decorative stitches. It’s the selling point on many machines. “80 Built-In Decorative Stitches!” Fancy stitches can be fun, but a variety of choices in other options may be more useful. When buying a machine, I look for flexibility in both stitch length and width. I like these attributes to be independently adjustable and have the widest range possible. A stitch length range of 0-5mm and a width range of 0-7mm are good examples. The ability to adjust them independently allows for the greatest number of combinations.

Multiple needle positions lead to better accuracy. We all want our seams to be straight. We accomplish this with practice, and by lining the edge of the fabric up with a visual mark on the machine. Many sewists use the edge of the presser foot, others use the lines on the needle plate. Whatever you choose, your accuracy improves with practice. The ability to move the needle position – left, right, or center – allows you to adjust the seam allowance without changing your visual guide. I look for the maximum number of needle positions – a needle that can be to the far left, the far right, or any point in between.

Drop-in, or front-loading bobbin? Sometimes the answer to this is as easy as asking: “What are you used to?” We often prefer the bobbin style we learned first, or have the most experience using. If you are an experienced sewist, then you likely already know what kind of bobbin you want. But, if you are new to sewing, you may not even realize there’s a choice. Here’s a good rule of thumb: When in doubt, choose a drop-in or horizontal bobbin. Generally these are easier to learn. This doesn’t mean they’re better, just less frustrating to learn to use. These are the bobbins that you can see sitting below a clear plastic door slightly in front of the presser foot. Since any frustration is likely to decrease your love for sewing – avoiding it when possible is a good idea.

For those of you lucky enough to live in or near Cincinnati Ohio, make sure you pop in and visit Sewn Studio! Otherwise you can check out their website, blog, and find them on facebook, twitter and pinterest.

When looking at the best embroidery machines from a cost standpoint alone, the machines with the built-in patterns alone are the best deal. They cost about 30% less than other types of embroidery machines and will give you some customization to fuel your creativity. These machines are perfect for those who may have never tried embroidery before.

Many embroidery machines will only do this type of work, but a rare few can do it all. Monogramming, stitching, ruffles, and whatever else you can imagine doing with a sewing machine! These all-in-one machines are typically the most expensive, but they are also the most valuable. If you really want to step up your sewing game, this is the way to go.

Brother PE770 Embroidery-Only

Product features include

Brother PE770

The PE770 is one of Brother’s embroidery-only machines, and it constantly appears in various embroidery sewing machine reviews. For those who want to get into more serious embroidery, the PE770 is one of the best machines that you could purchase with its incredible ease of use and advanced features.

Brother PE540D

Brother LB6800PRW

Singer XL400

Versatile Sewing and Embroidery Machines to Consider

You don’t have too many options when it comes to a combination sewing and embroidery machine. That is a bit strange, as the concept makes a lot of sense. Instead of having separate machines for sewing and embroidery, an embroidery sewing machine gives you the best of both worlds: a competent and versatile sewing machine, with powerful embroidery capabilities.

In this article we’re going to look at the best options for a sewing and embroidery machine combination.

Key Sewing Features

Singer’s Futura XL-400 is a big embroidery sewing machine, offering an extra-large x inch embroidery hoop. At more or less twice the price of the Brother SE400, you need to be sure that you need this large an embroidery space in the first space.

It is not only price that counts against the Singer though. Its sewing features are fairly basic and it also struggles to impress its users, with only 51% of buyers willing to give it more than a star rating. Let’s quickly look at the key features.

Compare

From the most popular brands like brother, singer, Janome and Juki sewing machines, I narrowed it down to 15.

Yes! 15 top rated sewing machines for 201that offers the best bang for your bucks and still delivers exceptional stitches.

I have consulted some sewing professional, read lots of consumer’s reviews, got feedback from some users and even use some of these sewing machines.

Accessories

Singer 9960 sewing machine comes with exclusive buttonholes under plate, stitch elongation, and mirror imaging options that provides options to customize sewing projects. You can control the exact look of a stitch pattern with its built-in Stitch editing capabilities.

The Bad!!

As a professional grade sewing machine, the left positioning of the needle makes sewing tedious. Adjusting and adapting to the new position will take a little while.

Likewise, the use of screwdriver to change the walking tool will cause a little discomfort.

What’s the point!

There’s too much to mention about Brother SE400 in terms of features. One thing you should know is that this is in machine. Meaning you can use it for sewing and specialized embroidery. There’s a 4” by 4” embroidery frame and 6Built-in Stitches to play with.

While the frame provides enough space for designing, the in-built LCD screen allows easy choice in choosing embroidery designs.

You can even edit and import designs from the internet to the Brother SE400, that’s if you don’t find any of the pre-installed 70 applicable. Aside the availability of thousands of designs from the internet, you can also upgrade the firmware whenever there’s a new one.

SINGER 7258

One negative thing about SINGER 725award winning sewing machine is that it’s too much value for money. Cheap for what you get at such price. Singer Stylist has almost everything a sewer needs and even more except the monogramming capability.

Here’s the deal

If you are a stylist or you are looking for an entry to intermediate level option that can do lot more then, Singer 725Stylist fits the bill. It offers a large variety of stitches for all the types of sewing, including fashion sewing, heirloom, quilting, crafts, decorative and home sewing.

The electronic automatic pilot feature and the speed control offers sewer full charge of sewing speed. This feature makes sewing challenging parts easier to sew and error-free. Singer 725makes threading so easy that you can easily thread an entire machine from spool to needle’s eye within six seconds.

Dial Stitch Selection

Even if you’ve never used a sewing machine once in your life, using Brother XL26will just come natural.

Navigating through any of the 2built in stitches and using the double needles will be easy and straight forward. Talking about portability, 1lbs is easy to carry around by kids and teenagers.

Another feature that you will find useful is the automatic button-holer and the free arm for making hems, cuffs and sleeves.

Threading and cutting the thread is usually not so easy for beginners, which is why the automatic threader and thread cutter will be very useful.

That’s not all!

Despite looking beautiful; don’t see the beauty as a weakness, the strong motor powers through any fabric even upholstery. Not having to make use of the foot pedal is one advantage the machine has over many others; just do it all with the start/stop button.

Not much issues!

There are hardly any fundamental flaws except the inability to adjust the presser foot.

However, with the convenient and easy handling ensured by the buttons, and ability to handle different fabric thickness, Janome Magnolia 7330 is one of the Best Janome Sewing Machine you should consider.

On the downside!

Likewise the number of stitches available is limited to less than 20. For heavy duty work like fixing some leather, bags, or jeans its quite enough.

Quilting

From first look, Brother PQ1500SL has the aesthetic of a sewing machine that appeals to the oldies, but has the heart and strength of the younger generation.

That’s where it derives the ability and manipulation of handling the most difficult of materials from Suede, Velvet and even Leather.

Brother SE1800

One thing has been the unique selling point of Brother SE1800; the cute and elegant look.

However, beyond the good looks of the embroidery machine is its high quality performance. Be ready to get ultra-creative and exceptional with arrays of features this sewing machine boasts of.

USB Attachment

If you check the specifications or features, it goes on and on, too much to be in just a single sewing machine. With 13designs and lettering fonts, imagine what you can bring out of every fabric.

Even to a beginner embroiderer, there’s a level of simplicity and ease the machine offers with the automated features which is also beneficial even to expert users.

Despite the strong motor and power the noise level is still bearable even in low noise environment or at night.

Purpose of Sewing

Ask yourself what do you need the machine for? And what would be the major task. Would it be stitching, embroidery, monogramming, for heavy thick clothes or for general task. Some machines are adapted mostly for one or two major task.

Although there are sewing machine that can do almost all task, but most good sewing machine is built for only one or more primary task.

So, keeping this in mind would help you to narrow down your search from many.

One important feature that should be considered, is the type and number of available stitch.

With these two, you can fashion out almost everything you need. However, consider what stitch you require the most and if you are limited by budget make some trade off.

Size and Weight

The size of a sewing machine must be considered. A heavy one can be an issue especially if you need to move around with it or you need to take it to classes.

In other aspect, very light sewing machine could also be worrisome especially if you sew hard or heavy fabric. The balance is needed here depending on your need and purpose of use.

Preferred brand

No doubt like anyone looking to buy a new product, you may already have a favorite brand in mind. You must have read through the list of the best sewing machine brands. If you have not, consider Singer, Juki, Janome, or Brother sewing machine.

Always endeavor to purchase from a known brand with track record of quality and consistency.

Controls and Ergonomic

This is 201and sewing machines have gone automated and computerized; don’t be left out of the trend with an outdated tools.

Required Accessory

When dealing with a sewing machine the use of accessory cannot be neglected. In-fact the more accessory you have the more easily it is to manipulate your fabric and create many beautiful styles.

Some comes with quite some few numbers of accessories while some come with so much that you really don’t need to spend extra on accessory.

You should consider sewing machine with a lot more accessory to choose from. This will make you versatile save you cash, and make your work a lot easier.

Instruction Manual

Sewing machines are becoming more sophisticated and advanced with plenty features to deal with. You cannot know it all in little time. You need a manual to learn over a period.

Ensure anyone you are going to buy comes with a detailed instructional manual in your preferred language. This would save you some confusion.

For professionals

SINGER 9960 is the perfect sewing machine to consider and invest in. Apart from being popular among many other professional the 99XX series or family has so many features. I would personally pick this if I am a Singer type.

Brother Project Runway PC420PRW computerized sewing machine.

For professionals yet to achieve the skills needed to be called an expert, recommending SINGER 725would be ideal. Even though any individual can use it, beginners will find the simplicity and automated features advantageous.

Brother CS6000i is the right sewing machine to start out with and learn their way up.

JUKI TL-2000Qi Sewing and Quilting Machine is another excellent option that deserves recommendation. With ability to produce high speed, quality and clean stitches, this machine can also quilt perfectly. So if you really need to get quilting job done fast, you should consider the Juki TL-2000Qi.

Embroidery is an important segment of sewing and I recommend Brother SE400 if you need a machine that can sew and embroider. Its price is reasonable and it’s also quite easy to use.

For industrial task, I tend to stick with Juki sewing machine.

Juki DDL 8870 with the less noisy servo motor is recommended here especially if you just want to churn out many products.

Our Expertise & Sewing Machine Range

Our team have over 100 years combined sewing experience and have worked with everything from a treadle to the most impressive and expensive computerised machines currently on the market.

As a specialist sewing machine dealer we absolutely love sharing our sewing machine knowledge and expertise. We are always very happy to demonstrate any of the machines in our extensive range at our Derbyshire showroom. Our range includes market leaders Janome, Brother, Husqvarna, Pfaff and Elna sewing machines. You can find them all on our website (see the links below).

Budget

Budget is an important consideration for most of us so why don’t we address it first? We think it is more important to help our customers identify their wish list first then look at affordability. This way your judgement isn’t clouded by your budget. We can always help you to identify features you are prepared to compromise on if necessary.

Last Words of Advice

Remember it is always advisable to purchase your sewing machine from a specialist sewing machine dealer such as Sew Essential. The trained and experienced staff are in a better position to help you choose the right sewing machine for you. They can also offer after sales support often unavailable from non specialist stores.

If purchasing a sewing machine for a child we recommend buying a basic adult sewing machine rather than a toy model. Toy models often have very limited capabilities and are often unreliable.

Whichever machine you choose always use a good quality of thread to avoid problems with breakage and stitch quality.

You can view our full range of sewing machines, embroidery machines, sewing machine feet and accessories, overlockers, thread and everything else you might need to complete your projects on our website.

In this article I’m going to break down the best sewing machines on the market.  I’ll talk about the features you NEED and some features that are NICE, but not NECESSARY.  The products I’m covering will range in performance from advanced to those well suited to beginners.

At the end of this article you should know exactly what you need.  Whenever I’m looking to buy something new I like to ask myself a few questions to help me sort out EXACTLY what I need.

Sewing Machine

Not all of them are necessary, but many of them offer significant time savings.

Features of the HZL-F600

The Juki comes with an extra wide work area at 8.5”x12”.  This is 4” larger than what you get with most machines. It also comes with an extension table, further expanding the work area.

Like the models above, a knee bar for hands-free presser foot lifting makes English-paper piecing much smoother. The automatic thread trimmer can be activated using the foot pedal or a button on the face of the machine.

Box feed technology has been applied to this machine, increasing the stitch quality and eliminating stitch shrinkage and shifting.

For sewing clothes, the machine contains1types of built-in buttonholes and 600 different stitch patterns, including numbers and letters. A large LCD display makes pattern selection easy as pie. The automatic buttonholer makes buttonholing a breeze- the button is placed on the foot, and the machine makes the proper sized buttonhole.

The HZL-F600 also comes with a bevy of feet to get you off on the right “foot,” including a walking foot, quilt pressing foot, edge sewing presser foot, and patchwork presser foot.

The extra wide work space allows you to handle all sorts of tasks.  The automatic thread trimmer allows you to use the foot pedal keeping your hands free.  The build quality means you’ll be able to count on this machine for YEARS to come.

This is a great all-in one sewing machine! The reason for it’s second place finish was simply because it has less working space than our top pick.

It is important to note that this Janome model uses a straight stitch only. If you are planning to sew clothing with buttonholes, or enjoy finishing projects with specialty stitches, this model may not be your best option.

The max speed is 1600 stitches per minute, and the speed control slider makes it easy to adjust to a speed at which you are comfortable working.

Features of the MC-6300P

The Janome 6300P allows stitches to be selected easily and painlessly, with the push of a few simple buttons. 6stitches and different buttonholes are easily accessible, and an LED display provides easy-to-read information. The low-bobbin indicator light eliminates the nasty surprise of an empty bobbin.

Great for quilting!

In addition to a large working area of 8.8”x4.7”, a clear extension table is included with this machine along with the free-motion foot.

The free motion foot allows for lots of creativity.  You can “doodle” your own free hand designs into the fabric.  For those looking for a bit more flexibility, the Janome MC-6300P sewing machine is a great choice.

If you are planning on quilting then you’ll want to look for a model with different options than many of those I’ve included here.  Here is another article that specifically talks about the top sewing machines for quilting.

Many of the models in this price range will have the same features as the more expensive models. Features such as auto thread trimming and feeding, knee-lever foot control, and needle up/down buttons are found in both price tiers.

However, where it may seem like all of the bells and whistles are present, you may compromise on speed and power versus the more expensive versions. And vice versa – the faster units may not have as much functionality as the slower machines.

For a beginner seamstress, high speed is not going to be as important as functionality, or even desired. It takes time and practice to become comfortable speed-feeding fabric through a machine. If you are a beginner with a budget, there are some products in this price range that will be suitable for you. The lower price tier will also have some units that are more appropriate for beginners.

Most of the sewing products in this tier are geared toward experienced seamstresses, or those who plan to devote themselves. If you are beginner looking to purchase a machine that will grow with you and offer more functionality, make sure to get one with a speed-control option. This way, you are able to limit it to a speed at which you are completely comfortable.

Did we say the models in this price range might compromise on speed? Well, this machine is the exception.

Geared toward quilters, the Juki TL-2000Qi can pack a whopping 1500 SPM, which is the fastest of all of the sewing machines we have reviewed. But be advised. Like the Janome 1600P-QC, this guy will only sew a straight stitch. If you plan to sew drapes, pillows, or other basic items, this unit will help you to get the job done fast.

Please be aware that at 1500 SPM, this product is really not recommended for those who are just learning to sew. A slower machine with more stitch options, such as a zig zag, satin, or blind hem, is recommended for beginners.

Like the more expensive options, the TL-2000Qi comes with an automatic needle-threader and a trimmer than can be activated with the foot pedal. It also includes a knee lever to lift the presser foot while using both hands to hold the fabric in place.

One potential downside to this sewing machine is the thread tension adjustment. It has manual tension adjustment, where the more expensive machines will have automatic tension adjustment.

It comes with a standard presser foot, 1/inch quilt foot, even-feed foot, auxiliary extension table, knee lift lever, plus basic maintenance tools.

The Singer S-1is a sturdy, powerful sewing machine at a great price. This unit has a heavy-duty metal frame and produces even, impeccable stitches. It is intuitive and user-friendly straight out of the box.

The added convenience of a knee-lever for lifting or dropping the presser foot, the programmable needle up/down function, and the extra large sewing space make this a great machine for quilters. The extension table adds space for larger projects.

For sewing clothing, the 400 built-in stitches, seven automatic buttonholes, and abundant included feet are wonderful.  Sleeves could be difficult t sew on this machine, as the base does not adjust to a smaller size.

At 1,000 stitches per minute, this sewing machine will get an experienced seamstress through large projects quickly. The variable speed control will allow a beginner to work their way up to higher speeds. So this machine is an excellent choice for a beginner seamstress, or an experienced seamstress looking to upgrade.

This unit comes with everything you need to get started sewing, including an all-purpose foot, button sewing foot, overedge foot, narrow rolled hem foot, zipper foot, satin stitch foot, blind hem foot, cording foot, overcasting foot, buttonhole foot, darning and freehand foot, quarter inch foot, walking foot, and open toe foot.

It also comes with screwdrivers, lint brush, thread spool caps, needles, seam ripper, bobbins, edge / quilting bars, knee lifter, adjustable seam guide, instruction manual, quick start guide, power cord, foot controller, accessory storage box.

These products are a great upgrade from the more basic, lower budget machines on the market. If you purchase a product in this price range, you can expect quality basic stitching and sturdy construction.

Models in this price range are great for a serious home sewist that is planning to make not only basic home décor, but perhaps also clothing for the family. Clothing can be made with a basic, low-budget machine, but you will likely be more pleased with the outcome when using a higher-grade model. Plus, a better built product will last longer.

This is also the price range where we may start to see such automated features as needle threading, thread cutting, and the needle up/down option. Specialty stitches and embellishments make the machines in this price bracket a fun option, though not everyone needs or wants these features. Some users may see the additional features as unnecessary, with more parts.

While a beginner could start out with a sewing machine in this category, we would recommend one of the cheaper options further down the list.  If you find you (or the person you’re giving it to) enjoy sewing, then you can upgrade to a better machine at a later date.

This sewing machine is a great option for a beginner, as it performs all of the stitches required for basic home décor and clothing, including a straight stitch, blind hem, zig zag stitch, and it allows width and length adjustment. It also offers 1built-in stitches and one four-step buttonhole.

A free arm allows sleeves and pant legs to be hemmed with ease. At just 1pounds, this machine can be easily tucked away when not in use. Snap-on presser feet make switching feet quick and easy.

Like other budget models, the work space on this model is fairly small, at 6.5”x4.7”. This is a normal amount of working space for a machine in this price tier, but it is a bit small for bulky projects and large scale quilting.

Out of the box, this sewing machine will come with a multi-purpose foot, blind-hem foot, a zig zag foot, and sliding buttonhole foot. It also comes with three extra bobbins, a screwdriver, seam ripper, and set of spare needles. You may also be able to find different bundle deals available, offering additional feet, needles, and bobbins.

This Singer Quantum offers specialty stitches and features some of the bells and whistles of the fancier machines, including automatic needle threading, needle up/down control, and auto thread cutter.

Unlike some of the cheaper models out there, the feed dogs on the 9960 can be disengaged to allow for free-motion sewing.  A speed control slider lets you choose you stitches per minute. Tension is controlled automatically, as is the stitch length and width. Comes with 600 built-in stitches and 1automatic, 1-step buttonholes.

This machine will be useful for small quilting jobs, basic home décor sewing, personal clothing, and embellishments.

It comes with an assortment of presser feet, including an adjustable bias binder foot, single-welt cording foot, braiding foot and guide, stitch-in-the-ditch foot for seams and edges on quilts, fancy-trim foot, clear piping foot, clearance plate, all-purpose foot, zipper foot, button sewing foot, satin stitch foot, buttonhole foot with underplate, open toe foot, blind hem foot, overcasting foot, narrow hem foot, cording foot, 1/4-inch foot, darning & embroidery foot, even feed foot, and the basics: a pack of needles, bobbins, seam ripper, brush, auxiliary spool cap, spool pin felt, screwdrivers, thread spool caps, seam guide, and quilting bar.

You may also consider one of the newer models of this unit, the Singer Quantum Stylist 9970, which is the same basic machine but with more accessories and stitches.

The models in this price bracket are cheap, basic, and easy to use straight out of the box. The speeds of these machines will vary.  To an experienced seamstress, they will likely seem slow. But for beginners, they will work well.

Inexpensive But Capable

So what are these particular units good for? Basic clothing repairs including patching and hemming. Making lightweight clothing. They will work well for basic home décor using normal weight fabrics, including drapes, pillow covers, and table linens. These are great machines to have around the house for the occasional seamstress.

They are not recommended for large-scale quilting or heavy-duty upholstery projects. They are not recommended for commercial use. They are not recommended for use with thick leather.

This super lightweight machine is perfect for beginners! It’s great for sewing basic clothing and home décor, such as throw pillows, curtains, tablecloths, napkins, and more. For home clothing sewers, the free-arm design allows for quick access to collars, sleeves, and pant hems.

It has 2different stitches, which can be accessed via a dial on the front panel. For those who are intimidated by buttons, this machine also offers a 1-step button-holer.

If you are interested in dabbling with quilting, the feed dogs will drop to allow for free motion sewing.

At just 1pounds, this machine is ideal for the occasional or on-to-go seamstress. It is light enough to take anywhere, and easy to stow away when not in use.

A built-in accessory storage compartment contains a selection of accessory feet including a zig zag foot, buttonhole foot, button sewing foot, zipper foot, narrow hemmer foot, and blind stitch foot. Other accessories include a darning plate, accessory bag with needle pack, twin needle, extra spool pin, screwdriver, bobbins (3), power cord and operation manual.

This is a great machine for beginners, even children. It comes with basic feet, including an all-purpose foot, zipper foot, and a buttonhole foot.

It also comes with a darning plate, pack of needles, bobbins, needle plate, screwdriver, spool pin felts, seam ripper, lint brush, foot control, and soft-sided dust cover.

The 130will perform a variety of basic stitches including straight, satin, zig zag, blind hem, scallop, and a 4-step buttonhole. A dial on the front allows for easy stitch selection.

Tension is regulated automatically, as is stitch length and stitch width. This is a good feature for beginners as it eliminates guesswork and the frustration involved with adjusting settings. Twin needle sewing is also possible with this model as it has dual spool pins.

It is free arm convertible, meaning the user will have an easier time working with sleeves, pant hems, collars, and cuffs. The machine has an internal metal frame for durability and stitch consistency.

This is not a great unit for quilters or aspiring quilters, as the working space is too small to comfortably work on a large, bulky project.

Singer is a trusted manufacturer, with excellent customer service.

There is a newer version of this model available, the Singer 123Sewing Machine. The newer version appears to be very much the same machine, but with a carrying bag, access to an online class, and decorative decals for personalizing the machine. The 123version is more expensive than the 1304; I would only consider buying this new version as a gift.

Important Terminology

Thread tension management can be incredibly frustrating for beginners and experienced seamstresses alike. Automatic thread tension helps to reduce the frustration. The user simply “tells” the sewing machine what fabric is being used, ensures that the correct needle is inserted, and the unit does the rest.

Ajustable Stitch Length One option that comes in very handy is an adjustable stitch length.  This allows you to give the stitch a slightly different look to a finished hem.  You won’t typically find this on lower priced sewing machines, but it’s worth having if you’re going to be sewing a great deal.

Number of Stitches

All models will offer, at minimum, a straight stitch. Most models will offer a zig zag stitch as well, and then you get into stretch stitches, blind hems, etc.

When a unit has hundreds of stitches, there are often a host of decorative stitches including alphabet letters, numbers, flowers, and much more.

Some seamstresses find these to be worthless, others find them to be fun and an additional way to express their creativity.

Motor Size

Knowing the type of materials you’ll be working with can help you determine how strong of a motor you’ll need.  Denim, leather, and quilting materials are tough and can take a toll on a sewing machine that utilizes plastic parts instead of metal.  A stronger motor will also operate on heavy duty materials more quickly.

The downside to a strong motor is that they tend to weigh more.  If you’re not planning on moving your machine very often this isn’t a big deal, but if you need it to be portable keep this in mind.

Mechanical

The next step up from mechanical, electronic sewing machines offer more functions and require less manual operation from the sewer.  Some features include stitch length adjustment, tension adjustment, and automatic thread cutting.  They even have certain stitches pre-programmed so that all you have to do is enter the stitch and it takes care of the rest.  One example of an electric model is the Janome HD1000.

Pull Quote

If you’re debating between a mechanical or a computerized machine, think of it like the difference between buying a point-and-shoot camera and an intermediate DSLR.

Computerized machines are more expensive, but also offer more functions that, once you learn how to use them, can make sewing easier and your results better. Good computerized machines will have stitch selection options that can take a lot of the guesswork out of sewing (and may help you get better results automatically). And some will also have safety features to help keep your fingers safe.

If you’re debating between a mechanical or a computerized machine, think of it like the difference between buying a point-and-shoot camera and an intermediate DSLR. Mechanical machines, like point-and-shoot cameras, will get the job done, but with limited options and flexibility. A good-quality computerized sewing machine, like a DSLR, can give you some handy built-in programs to make sewing easier while allowing you to use manual features for when you get more comfortable with and better at sewing. If something breaks, the repairs might be pricey, but it’s still a great investment if you’ll be using it all the time. The sewing machines in this guide are that same intermediate step, when you’ve outgrown a solid, basic machine but aren’t ready to sell your car to pay for the top-end models.

If you plan on sewing many types of projects with many different materials, look for an all-purpose machine, (like our main pick, the Janome DC5100). These tend to be heavy machines that won’t budge when sewing thick quilts, but they’re also delicate enough to nicely sew silk and and other thinner fabrics. They’ll have a good selection of standard and decorative stitches, a needle up/down feature, and they’ll even automatically adjust your thread tension for getting perfect stitches.

If you’re most interested in quilting, you’ll want a machine with a big sewing surface—and ideally the option of an extension table—so you have the maximum support for your projects. Fast stitching is nice for things like free-motion quilting, and as with all-purpose machines a heavy machine won’t budge when sewing thick layers of fabric and batting.

If you think you could use sewing classes, we’d recommend trying to buy from a dealer. Often classes are thrown in for the cost of the sewing machine, and the dealer can handle maintenance and any troubleshooting you may need. But buying from a dealer isn’t always optimal or convenient (as we cover below). And if you don’t think you’ll actually make it to the sewing classes, you’ll be paying a premium for your machine. Models sold online can be more affordable and you can take online classes at places like Craftsy or Creativebug.

How we picked

Harvey Federman, of Sew Right, suggested we look for machines with automatic needle threading (which is great if your eyes strain to thread through those impossibly tiny needle holes), easy to edit stitch width and length options (and a program mode to save them, if possible), a start/stop button so you don’t have to use the foot pedal, and a needle up/down feature, which lets you choose where the needle stops when you stop sewing. The option to keep the needle lowered when you stop sewing is really handy for pivoting around a corner or chain piecing a quilt. Every machine on this list has at least three out of four of those functions.

Federman also recommends looking for a machine that will sew through layers at slow speed, as well as smooth and easy speed control, which is useful for going through thick layers, like heavy denim hems or quilt layers. We weren’t able to try most of the machines on our list, so we couldn’t determine how well each machine does on these last two points by looking only at specs. But they’re good features to keep in mind if you’re trying a machine in a dealership.

We wanted a nice assortment of included presser feet, including ¼-inch seam, zigzag, buttonhole, zipper, darning, and straight stitch. We were also looking for a few included bobbins and some basic cleaning supplies to help maximize the initial investment in the machine. And ideally we wanted safety features, like a machine that beeps or won’t sew if the presser foot is raised—this helps stop you from sewing over your fingers.

The downside to computerized machines is that the warranty for electronics is not always as good as for the mechanical parts. Often if your electronics go, it’s a pricier repair than if something jams or breaks. That said, I’ve had my computerized machines for two and a half, five, and seven years, and I’ve never had an electronics problem.

Keep in mind that quality computerized machines retain a certain value. Every machine in this guide, whether it’s available online or not, is manufactured by a company that still uses dealerships for most sales. Those machines hold their resale value. You can always bring one of those machines into a dealer, even if you didn’t purchase it from them, and see if it can be traded in toward a newer model.

For the machines sold exclusively at dealerships, I went to two dealerships to try them out (I was able to try only the Husqvarna Viking Opal 650 and H100Q). We didn’t try any of the machines sold online, but we did closely compare specs and user reviews between the machines.

The competition

Baby Lock Amelia: Another portable option coming in at 1pounds, but for the price we preferred the Janome New Home 720.

Baby Lock Rachel: We thought this was out of the price range we wanted for a middle of the road machine.

Brother Designio DZ1500F: This is a straight stitch only machine, Brother’s answer to the Juki TL-2000Qi. We didn’t think it was versatile enough for this guide.

Brother Laura Ashley PC660LA: This one came close to being a pick, it’s the first runner up in the competition. A solid machine, but pricier than the Janome DC5100 or the Juki HZL-F300, and without some of our favorite features.

Brother SE400 Embroidery and Sewing Machine: This is an incredibly popular, well-reviewed combination machine that does straightforward sewing and small embroidery. But we decided to focus on simple sewing machines for this guide. If you’re interested in embroidery, it’s worth looking at.

Janome 8077: This is one of the lower-end Janome computerized machines. We just felt that the other two Janome machines we picked offered better quality and the features we wanted.

Janome DC201or DC2015: These are the lower-end versions in the same line as our best all-purpose pick, the Janome DC5100. For the price difference and features, we thought the DC5100 was a much better machine.

Janome HD3000: A basic mechanical machine with decent reviews, we just didn’t think it was a fit for what we wanted here.

Juki HZL-K85: A lower-end model in a slightly different series than our quilting pick the Juki HZL-F300. The user reviews were not great, we skipped it.

Juki TL-2000Qi: This machine only does a straight stitch, and we thought it was too specialty for this guide.

Singer Future XL-400 Sewing and Embroidery Machine: Another combination machine, and also a Singer. We skipped this one, too.

Viking H Class 100Q: Another three-quarter machine, and we did test this one, but we preferred the Janome New Home 720.

Perfect for Larger Quilts

Below you will find some of the best quilting sewing machines that are perfect for the beginning quilter. The sewing machines in this list are inexpensive, have excellent reviews without losing any of the must-have features or accessories.

Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine

Included are 60 stitches, styles of 1-step buttonholes, auto-needle threader and for your quilting needs, a quilting table. The table is a nice touch and makes it much easier when creating  your quilt. Thicker quilts are also a breeze to work with thanks to the walking foot and the handy quilting guide will space out your stitching evenly.

Brother Project Runway Sewing Machine

The Brother XR9500PRW is another popular entry level sewing machine. It is very similar to the CS6000i above, but has a few more features and a bit more expensive.

The Brother HC1850 sewing machine is another step up from the previous Brother XR9500PRW sewing machine. The features are again, a bit more advanced and therefore a bit more expensive.

This Brother sewing and quilting machine includes 130 stitches, styles of step buttonholes, auto-needle threader and also includes an over-sized quilting table. This machine can sew, quilt and embroider with ease. For quilters, the decorative stitches, like the feather stitch can be used over seams or to appliqué along edges.

Juki TL-2000qi Sewing and Quilting Machine

This Juki quilter is a true workhorse; it achieves speeds of 1500 stitches per minute, has auto-needle threader and its aluminum die cast frame reduces vibration while you work. You will find that the stitch quality this machine consistently delivers will surpass even your biggest expectations. It produces flawless results with any stitch you ask it to perform and does so quickly and efficiently. The instructions are a bit sparse for this machine, but I found tons of videos on YouTube that were great in helping to learn the functions of this machine.

When looking for an advanced quilter that is able to handle all types of fabric and multiple layers then you really do get what you pay for. This Juki sewing and quilting machine is able to handle anything you throw at it and is a great buy for anyone who is serious about their quilting.

Janome MC-6300p Heavy Duty Sewing Machine

Besides the larger embroidery area, what else does the PE770 has in store for aspiring embroidery crafters? Brother packed a lot of functionality in this one. There’s an automatic needle threader that does an excellent job at pushing the thread right through the needle’s eye by simply following certain instructions (a helpful diagram is printed on the machine).

For monitoring and controlling the machine, you get a nice LCD touch screen display where you can access some powerful design and editing features. The user interface is definitely one area where Brother exceeds all expectations thanks to the intuitive navigation system which is very easy to use. Plenty of operations like rotating, adjusting the size, or mirror-imaging are available for editing designs. Previews on the LCD display are also possible to see more clearly how the changed embroidery is before starting.

All in all, the PE770 gives you some amazing features in a very high-end looking machine. This is definitely a satisfying choice for anyone who thinks it’s time to take their embroidery to the next level.

Brother Designio Series DZ820E Embroidery Machine

It’s no surprise to find yet another Brother product on this list, as the company has managed to conquer a great portion of the market for embroidery machines. The world of embroidery has another strong candidate in the Designio DZ820E, a high-end machine specialized for embroidery only.

Performance-wise, the DZ820E works with a cutting edge needle threading system which can automatically push the thread directly through the needle. There’s also a capable thread cutter that trims it automatically when each embroidery segment is finished. The quick-set drop-in top bobbin is very jam resistant always ensuring that the bobbin doesn’t move around.

Brother equipped this model with a memory function to allow you to store all your preferred designs for later use. The user interface that Brother offers through the LCD touch screen monochrome display is decent for viewing various editing features and tutorials. Something worth considering about this machine is the extras that DZ820E comes with. Two additional embroidery hoops are included which might cut some time from your complex projects.

A full starter kit is provided with this, so getting into designing and crafting immediately is possible right out of the box. In this kit, you will find six spools of quality thread for embroidery, a satchel of fabric stabilizer, extra bobbins and many more useful items.

The price of this machine is actually incredibly low considering everything provided. Any aspiring designer can quickly and efficiently enjoy embellishing clothing and various accessories for creating more customized and stylish items. The Brother Designio Series DZ820E is a great option for high-quality embroidery and because of that, it’s fully recommended.

SINGER 725Computerized Sewing Machine

The SINGER 725is a sewing machine which won many awards and received a lot of praise from many satisfied customers. The reason for that is simple. It’s an affordable product in terms of price, performance, and efficiency. Getting your money’s worth is basically guaranteed with this one.

One of the most appreciated features in a good sewing machine is the ease of threading. Thanks to an automatic needle threader, you’ll get the entire machine threaded in record time just six seconds from the spool to the needle’s eye. In case you have trouble figuring stuff out, the instructions are conveniently printed on the machine. All in all, this is a huge time saver.

The bobbin system has a clear cover for monitoring the supply of bobbin thread. Because of the fact that the bobbin is loaded from the top, this makes for a much smoother process. With the help of a LED light, the area is brightly illuminated. A long-lasting bulb included is designed to stay cool even during long times of machine operation.

What you’ll love about the 725is the great selection of one-step buttonhole styles which are built-in and perfectly sized. Independently of how many you need to create, you’ll always get great results every time. For those that require long sides, there’s one extra endless buttonhole.

In case you need some more advanced features, the SINGER 725has got you covered. The needle can be programmed to execute a complete stop in the highest up position to simplify the fabric removing process. It’s also possible to program it to stop in the down position that’s ideal for pivoting and quilting.

The metal frame should keep the machine sturdy while it’s operating so the worry about missed stitches should disappear. Control is key for the SINGER 725as you can adjust the speed as the machine sews. Beginners and those who rely on precision stitching will benefit greatly from this machine.

With many accessories included, 100 stitches and packing so much functionality for a considerably low price, this is hands-down one of the best choices currently on the market for a sewing machine. Investing in the SINGER 725means investing in your crafting skills in the long run.

Specifications list

SINGER is a well-known manufacturer of sewing machines and their 9960 Quantum Stylist model has very promising features for a reasonable price. Its functions are quite sophisticated as this machine uses the latest cutting edge technology to deliver the best the market has to offer in this industry.

The 9960 has a very capable threading system which comes with an automatic needle threader to simplify the job. In just six seconds you can basically have the entire machine threaded. This is a huge timesaver and in case you need more guidance, SINGER has even provided essential threading instructions right there printed on the machine itself.

Thanks to the crystal clear LCD display, you can much easily view all the stitch information. On it, you can also adjust the stitch length and width. For obtaining more reliable results and in a more consistent manner regarding buttonhole sewing, SINGER implemented a very practical one-step process. Using it, the sides of the buttonholes will be sewn in the same direction so as to prevent the possible mess up of the fabric and any misses in stitching.

In the upper lid of the sewing machine, you will be greeted by a handy chart that contains all the 600 built-in stitches. Features to look for in a sewing or embroidery machine

With different capabilities and a wide range in price, there is no single sewing machine — just the one that best suits your particular needs. Are you a quilter, or a beginner looking for something more entry level? Perhaps you are an embroidery expert with years of projects under your belt, and you need a machine that can keep up with you. Whatever your specific need, there is a model that is right for you, and Jones Sew & Vac can help you find it.

Free Motion.

Computerized sewing and embroidery machines have become very good at allowing free motion stitching. Drop the feed dogs and gently guide the fabric around to “draw” on it with the thread. This is a feature you really want to test drive before buying.

Pfaff Quilt Expression 4.2

Brother Dream Machine 2

Brother Dream Machine might be the most advanced sewing machine ever made for home use. Despite having every feature you could ever dream of, it isn’t difficult to use, which is why it’s a Consumer’s Digest Best Buy.

Pfaff Creative Sensation Pro II

Designer Epic is one of our favorites for those that like to take on large projects. It features an extra large bobbin and a sewing area that measures 3x 140 mm. Add to that the 650 on-board embroidery designs and the massive library of 1200 stitches, and the Husqvarna Viking can keep right on sewing all the way to Valhalla.

Sewing Made Simple

This Brother sewing machine has found a permanent spot atop our list of best sewing machines for beginners.

What Makes the Brother PC420RW Special

Brother pays homage to the TV show Project Runway in the Brother Project Runway PC420PRW Limited Edition sewing machine.

The PC420PRW offers an impressive set of built-in features and included accessories typically only included with higher priced sewing machines.

If you sew professionally or are serious about your sewing, the Brother Project Runway PC420PRW works great. It handles both light and medium work well, as well as giving a worthy effort on decorative projects.

We found the machine to be sturdy and sleek, allowing it to handle some large quilts without being pushed around.

The twin needle function comes in handy when you need parallel stitches sewn closely together. Great for topstitching, hemming, pintucking, quilting, and other embellishment techniques.

We particularly like the built-in knee lifter that allows you to easily raise/lower the presser foot, leaving your hands free to remove or reposition your fabric.

Many Modern Features

Comes with 100 stitch patterns, styles of automatic one-step buttonholes, and presser feet (zigzag/all purpose, buttonhole, zipper, rolled hem, blind hem, darning and embroidery, overcast, straight stitch, gathering, satin stitch/straight stitch).

Other modern features include automatic needle threader, adjustable stitch length and width, programmable needle up/down, easy push-button stitch selection, top drop-in bobbin, bright LED work light, and more free arm storage compartment.

Highlights

For beginner and intermediate sewers, the Janome 807is a new choice thanks to its computerized display and automatic features that make life easier when dealing with common tasks.

More experienced sewers will appreciate the ability to adjust stitch width and length.

The Janome 807has built-in thread cutter, six different buttonhole styles, and an LCD display that shows the stitch patterns and reveals error codes when you need to troubleshoot the sewing machine.

Other nice features include adjustable feed dogs, strong sewing light, sturdy extension table and free arm.

No Twin Needle Capabilities

Most machines in the same price range feature twin needle capabilities (helpful for clothing). Without this feature, you have to sew multiple lines to create a hem when twin needles would allow you to get this done all at once.

Lack of Accessories

Compared to its peers, the Janome 807comes with few additional bells and whistles. It has significantly fewer buttonholes, stitch patterns, and presser feet than sewing machines that are much less expensive.

Nice features, reliable sewing machine for beginners. For the price tag, however, there are simply better options available, such as the SINGER 9960 Quantum Stylist.

Brother CS6000i

There is no end to the love we see for the Brother CS6000i. Reviewers rave about how easy it is to use, the vast variety of settings and stitches, the amazing array of included accessories, and how various optional accessories make it even more versatile. Many say that they almost can’t believe the rock-bottom price for a computerized sewing machine. Some owners have had theirs for years and say it’s still going strong.

Sauder Sewing Craft Cart

Crafters and sewers love the compact, attractive Sauder Sewing Craft Cart. It folds up easily and the casters roll smoothly. When you’re ready to work it folds out to make a large, 63-inch wide work space. It’s easy to assemble, they say, and seems to be sturdy, durable and well-built. Many use it as a small desk in addition to a craft or sewing table. It comes in three finishes, Cinnamon Cherry, Amber Pine and Soft White.

With so much else to keep us busy — video games, endless texting with friends and family, and the Internet putting the world of entertainment at our fingertips — it may surprise you to find that sewing and crafting are more popular than ever. To indulge that interest, there are thousands of sewing machines on the market, from simple to extremely fancy.

Features are the only other consideration

If you want to embroider or quilt, you’ll need to look for a machine that supports these functions. Machines designed for embroidery come with one or more embroidery hoops, embroidery designs and multiple alphabet styles for monogramming — plus an extension table (that’s sometimes an optional purchase, though) for working on larger items. Models capable of quilting generally have a “walking foot” that evenly feeds multiple layers of material through the machine, and some units include a “knee lifter” for lifting the presser foot with your knees so you don’t have to let go of your work. These machines can come in either manual or computerized models.

A lot of serious sewers prefer to sew on a serger — and many people own both a sewing machine and a serger. Serger sewing machines give your projects a professional finish and are especially useful for sewing stretch fabrics. If you are in the market for one, head over to our separate report on sergers for our recommendations.
