laser measurer Buyer’s Guide
How To Use A Laser Distance Measure
To make a simple distance measurement using a laser measure the user must place the instrument at one end of the line that is to be measured and aim the laser beam at a solid target such as a wall or cabinet.
If a solid object is not available then a plastic target can be placed at the required destination to allow the laser beam to be reflected.
Next, the button is pressed and the distance is measured and displayed on the laser measure’s screen.
If a simple distance was all that was required then the job is already done but a whole range of options still exist for the user.
Areas and volumes can be calculated by taking further measurements and making use of the on-board functions to perform the calculations for you.
Each model is different so it is always advisable to spend some time with the user manual before attempting some of the more advanced tasks.

There are many different laser distance measures available for use and so there is a lot to consider when trying to choose the right one for you. So, what laser measure is right for you? Here are some things to consider: – Laser distance measures can range in price from £9- £59so what you are willing to spend is an important factor to consider.
Indoor/Outdoor Use – Do you need to have a laser measure that can be used for indoor and outdoor measuring? Some laser measures, such as the Leica DISTO D510, can do this. However, other measures will only be suitable for one or the other.
Distance Measurement – What will you be measuring? Laser distance measures can vary on the distance they can measure over. Some will measure up to 60m whereas other can go as far as 200m.
Waterproof – Will you need a laser distance meter that is waterproof? You might want to consider measures such as the Leica DISTO X310.
The 201Leica DISTO™ bluetooth D1laser measure is sure to revolutionise measuring.
Target Plate –
Target plates are an essential accessory for Laser distance measures when measuring large distances. They provide a reflecting target which helps to provide a precise measurement. There are multiple types of target plates, some can be fixed to corners, edges or on floor marks.
Soft Bag –
It can be handy to have a convenient carry bag for your equipment to not only keep it safe but keep everything together. Try our Leica GVP50DISTO Soft bag which does just that and has pockets for all relevant manuals, CD’s, cables and other equipment.
Laser precision and range
Due to the tremendous speed of light (186,000 miles per second), and the straightness of lasers over short distances, a laser distance measurer enables quick and very precise measurements, often to within a fraction of a millimeter. They also can eliminate inaccuracies from sagging tape measures.
Range for laser distance measurers varies. Budget models may be only capable of measuring distances up to 6feet, whereas top quality laser distance pointers may measure spans up to and beyond 660 feet.
When choosing a laser range finder, it is important to have a general idea of the distances you will be measuring. This may help determine the model you choose.
Budget models may be all you need if you are measuring around an average-sized house or your small business.
If your house is large with vaulted or high ceilings (say over 2,500 square feet) or you are trying to measure a longer distance, a mid-range model may suit your needs best.
For contractors, survey crews, and road workers, a high end laser distance meter may be the correct choice. These will measure distances that span hundreds of feet.
Going long
Over greater distances, triangulation and other techniques may be used in laser distance measurers. The phenomena known as the Doppler effect also lets lasers accurately measure velocity in moving from one point to the next.
In some devices the pulse may be coded to avoid jamming, such as in devices intended to foil the use of laser speed detectors by police.
The precision of most standard electronic tape measures depends on the accuracy of the laser pulse and the speed of the receiver.
Very short laser pulses and fast detectors can gauge object distance to within a few millimeters even over distances of many yards.
Range is limited by the fact that even a focused beam of light will began to diverge due to the diffusion of light through differences in the gases of the air, which may be microscopic in size or miles high, but act as inefficient lenses.
These distortions can make it difficult to get accurate readings of objects occluded by bushes, in unusual weather conditions, or long distances in the open where temperature gradients occur, such as desert terrain.
Accuracy matters
Manufacturer accuracy ratings vary between models and brands.
Many models are accurate to +/- 1/1of an inch, with others accurate to +/- 1/3of an inch. On the lower end, budget tools may not be as precise, with measurements within +/- 1/of an inch or +/- 1/of an inch.
Also, accuracy may depend on how securely the device is positioned or controlled. Obviously hand-pointed scanners will be less steady than those mounted on a tripod pivot.
For limited range work, however, laser range finders are incredibly useful objects which can take accurate measurements simply by laying them on a solid surface.
What you should look for in a laser range finder
Before purchasing a laser distance measurer, you should first compare the range or distance limitations given by the manufacturer compared to actual needs.
For example, the needs of a survey team planning a new runway or a contractor building a new addition could require different devices for accurate measurements.
Many are compact enough to fit neatly into a pocket. Small size allows carpenters, roofers, and others the mobility to take faster and more accurate readings than they could get from tape measures. In turn, this can provide considerable savings in time and potentially use of materials.
This can help not only in the actual work but in estimates depending on length and angles.

Lasers can be used in various ways to measure distances or displacements without physical contact.
In fact they allow for the most sensitive and precise length measurements, for extremely fast recordings (sometimes with a bandwidth of many megahertz), and for the largest measurement ranges, even though these qualities are usually not combined by a single technique.
Depending on the specific demands, very different technical approaches can be appropriate.
They find a wide range of applications, for example in architecture, inspection of fabrication halls, criminal scene investigation (CSI), and in the military.
Techniques for Distance Measurements
Triangulation is a geometric method, useful for distances in the range of ≈ 1 mm to many kilometers.
Time-of-flight measurements (or pulse measurements) are based on measuring the time of flight of a laser pulse from the measurement device to some target and back again.
Such methods are typically used for large distances such as hundreds of meters or many kilometers.
Using advanced techniques, it is possible to measure the distance between Earth and the Moon with an accuracy of a few centimeters.
Typical accuracies of simple devices for short distances are a few millimeters or centimeters. phase shift method uses an intensity-modulated laser beam.
Compared with interferometric techniques, its accuracy is lower, but it allows unambiguous measurements over larger distances and is more suitable for targets with diffuse reflection.
Note that the phase shift technique is sometimes also called a time-of-flight technique, as the phase shift is proportional to the time of flight, but the term is more suitable for methods as described above where the time of flight of a light pulse is measured.
Frequency modulation methods involve frequency-modulated laser beams, for example with a repetitive linear frequency ramp.
The distance to be measured can be translated into a frequency offset, which may be measured via a beat note of the sent-out and received beam.
Interferometers allow for distance measurements with an accuracy which is far better than the wavelength of the light used.

The product features help you to choose the best Distance meter for your specific sets of requirements. Here are the prominent features which help you narrow down your search of Digital Distance Meter to an appropriate selection.
Time of Flight
The most common form of laser rangefinder operates on the time of flight principle by sending a laser pulse in a narrow beam towards the object and measuring the time taken by the beam to be reflected off from the target and returned back to the device.
With the speed of light known, and an accurate measurement of the time taken, the distance can be calculated. However, this technique is not so commonly used for measurement of high precision sub-millimetre as the speed of light is high. However, triangulation and other techniques are widely used for Measurement Of distances.
Tips to Select Digital Distance Meter
When selecting one of these tools to purchase, we recommend you first compare the range or distance they are rated to measure(based on your work requirement) since some have better range than the others. Once the battery is correctly installed, most brands of wireless digital thermometers simply require users to engage the trigger mechanism in order to turn the unit on and begin operation. An automatic shut-off feature is typically included in all models which will turn the unit off after a set period of time (usually between and 1seconds).
Selecting Unit of Measurement
Infrared thermometers typically allow users to be able to change the unit of temperature between Celsius and Fahrenheit subject to their individual requirements. Most models use Fahrenheit as the default, or pre-set unit of measurement and the LCD screen will generally have either a °C or °F symbol displayed to confirm the current setting.
To change the unit of measurement, users should refer to the instruction manual accompanying their infrared thermometer. In most cases however, once the unit has been turned on and LCD screen comes on, users can change the temperature scale by pushing the function buttons underneath the LCD display marked “°C/°F” until it is the correct setting for the application.
For those models that do not have a “°C/°F” function button, there is typically a switch contained in the battery compartment which can be used to adjust this setting.
Laser Pointer and Backlight
Most models come with either a single or dual red laser pointer to assist with aiming the digital pyrometer and a backlight to enable the LCD display to be visible in dark or low-light environments.
In some units these two features are permanently enabled and cannot be turned on or off manually. In others, these features can be manually adjusted either via the feature buttons underneath the LCD display or switches located inside the battery compartment. Separate symbols will usually be displayed on the LCD screen when these features are turned on.
Measuring a Temperature
To measure a temperature, all that is required is to point the unit at an object and pull the trigger. The temperature reading will usually appear on the LCD screen in less than a second.
Once the trigger is released, the reading will normally continue to be displayed on the LCD until a new temperature measurement is taken, or the unit automatically shuts itself off after a pre-set time.
If using a single laser pointer to assist with aiming, it is important to note that some models set the laser a small distance from the center of the temperature measurement. With a dual laser pointer, the area in between the laser dots will often be the spot where the unit will take its measurement. As there are slight differences between models, it is recommended that users review the instruction manual prior to operation to ensure that they will be taking the temperature measurement from the correct area.
It is also important to consider the distance-to-spot ratio of the unit prior to taking a temperature measurement. Further discussion on distance-to-spot ratio and field of view can be found in “Factors to Consider Prior to Purchase”.
There are more advanced features which accompany certain models of wireless digital thermometers which are beyond the scope of this basic set of instructions. Emissivity is one feature of all infrared thermometers which are a major factor in temperature measurement and has been reserved its own special section for a detailed explanation.
Temperature Range
One of the first considerations a prospective buyer of an infrared thermometer should take into account is the range of temperatures that the unit is able to measure. Obviously if the thermometer is unable to read temperatures of the upper or lower limits required by the end user then it will not be suitable. That said, the growth in the number of models available on the market allows for great variety in choice to the consumer.
Traditionally pyrometers were designed to measure the surface temperatures of objects with a very high temperature however with the advancement of technology has come the innovation to also allow for the measurement of materials which may be extremely cold.
Many models of infrared thermometers can comfortably measure temperatures within a range of -50°C to 500°C (-58°F to 932°F), however premium models offer a user the ability to measure temperatures in excess of 1,000°C. Again the primary consideration is the intended application of the device and the budget of a prospective buyer.
Infrared Thermometer Applications
Thermometers have been used as a measuring device for temperature for centuries and the invention of infrared thermometers has allowed users to be able to take accurate and reliable measurements of surface temperatures without requiring direct contact with an object.
After time, temperature is the second most frequently measured physical unit and various fields depend heavily on accurate temperature measurements as an important indicator of product quality or equipment conditions. Technological innovation and efficient mass production techniques in recent years have seen a decrease in the cost of infrared thermometers and an increase in their reliability. This in turn has seen an increase in new applications for these diagnostic instruments.
Professional and general applications for wireless digital thermometers are limitless only by the imagination and the following is a summary of the more common uses of these devices.
General Applications
Many of the professional applications of digital thermometers can be of equal benefit to the general consumer and within the home.
It is important to remember that infrared thermometers only measure surface temperatures and not internal temperature. So for some popular applications in and around the home, they will provide only a very general guide of internal temperature if that is the intended purpose. Their increasing popularity for such applications lies with in their ability to measure temperature quickly and without making a mess.
The above list is a sample of some of the cool uses of an infrared thermometer in and around the home. Their application is limited only by the imagination and they are an invaluable device for every home. Digital pyrometers are easy to operate and now that they are more affordable, there really are no excuses for every family to enjoy the benefits and efficiencies they can provide.
We Want to Hear From You!
600nm to 660nm wavelength is best for shallower treatments, treating lymphatic issue, acupoint therapy and for treating shallow areas. It is also commonly use for more complex problems because much of the energy is absorbed by the blood which flow throughout the body activates different problem areas. Because of the unique properties of this wavelength, it is commonly used in cosmetic lasers.
800nm to 860nm is the sweet spot for combining maximum penetration depth and maximum photo-chemical reaction. Some laser gurus like Dr. Weber and Dr. Hamblin promote 8nm as the optimum wavelength because it produces the maximum interaction with the mitochondria.
lasers just make up for the inefficiency with more power.
The best lasers offer multiple wavelengths. This gives you more flexibility in treating a wider range of ailments.
Where to Start
Class 3: The best overall value in class lasers are the Avant LZ30p, LZ30x and LZ30z portables. They blow away the competition (like ML830 and Erchonia) based on the specs and they do everything well. The Avant Lasers offer both RED and IR wavelengths, both Pulsing and CW output, both broad and pinpoint treatments in one compact package. Another great handheld option is the PowerMedic Pro laser, their acupuncture probe is one of the best option because it is optimized for that application. For a desktop class system, consider the Chattanooga Vectra Gensys (professionals only). For unattended treatments, consider the Avant with a stand or the Powermedic.
Class 1, & 1m: If safety is a high priority, the TerraQuant series laser are simply the best. There are probably more TerraQuant lasers in the world than all the other brands put together. Because they use superpulsing technology, they have higher peak power level than you can normally get in a sub 3b class laser. Just stay away from anything that looks a laser pointer as these system are legally limited to 5mW. Class 1m lasers are limited to 500mW (the same as a class 3b) but can not cause eye damage unless the laser is focused through a lens. Therefor, a class 1m can be 100 times stronger than a class 2.
Indoor Tools
Prior to purchasing consider the various uses for your measuring tool. Are you are simply looking to replace your measuring tape for logging distance, or do you need a device that can perform and store calculations? Measuring tools have advanced functions that can make almost any professional task go a bit faster.
Look for the total range of any single device. If you consistently work in a smaller area or on bigger commercial sites or larger homes, you need a device that has a larger measuring range. You may also need a device with larger memory capacity for complex projects, such as road construction.
Laser Distance Measurer
Laser distance measurers are not only faster and easier to use than linear tape measurer, they are also more accurate. Simply aim the device to your end point and the distance displays on the screen. Many of these devices can also calculate various angles and perform calculations. Some of these quality measuring tools have memory capacity for auto calculations that are common to your projects or profession.
Higher-end models have a much higher range than standard models. For example, a lower-range model can measure distances of up to 20 meters. This standard model should suffice for single unit dwellings, smaller homes or offices. Larger units measure distances of 300 to 800 feet. These are well suited for larger homes and commercial projects. Road workers require distance measurers with longer ranges, and should also look for models that have Bluetooth functionality.
There is also precision to consider. Lower-end models will ensure accuracy up to 1/inch. For general measurements and estimates, this is sufficient. For jobs where finite accuracy is crucial, such laying pipe, grading and pouring a foundation or grading for a road, look for a model that guarantees accuracy of 1.0 mm or less.
Multi-Angle Measurement
One of the primary advantages of how laser measuring tools function is their multi-angle capability. Simply mount a multi-angle laser to a tripod, fasten it to a column or hang it from a wall and allow it to measure multiple angles at once. Many multi-angle lasers also perform multiple calculations for you with the data collected. Depending upon the nature of your work, this could help improve your estimates and overall workflow.
Key Accessories for your Measurement Tool
There are several different types of laser accessories that help make your measurement tool function with greater accuracy. A wall mount is a simple and affordable solution that allows you to mount the laser level to a single spot. This device typically attaches via a clip or a clamp to ceiling trim or a beam. Look for options that include several height adjustments for different types of measuring tools.
Pole systems and rods help elevate the height of the laser level to measure distances either high above or below you. Telescoping rods can adjust to different lengths depending upon the situation. Tension poles secure almost anywhere in the room for convenient and steady 360-degree measuring, or capturing multiple angles. These accessories are easily mounted and taken down without tools or hardware.
The most popular accessory for the professional is the mounting tripod. Most manufacturers offer a line of tripods designed specifically for their larger multi-angle transit levels and surface lasers. They also work with point lasers to hold a steady line for all types of measuring circumstances.
Look for tripods made of heavier and sturdier equipment for outdoor uses, such as roadwork and surveys. These are typically rated for professional construction jobs and are weightier and made of higher-grade materials than lower-end tripods. They may also have a center column that can make smoother and quicker height adjustments and could have a greater overall height allowance.
Electronic and leaser measurement tools provide more accuracy and may be easier to use than their analogue counterparts. Bluetooth functionality helps make calculations on the fly and add data to existing plans. These versatile features can determine how to choose a measuring tool to help your projects go more smoothly and help make on-site estimates more accurate.
Quick Tips for Laser Measuring
If you’ve been looking for a way to make outdoor distance measurements faster and easier, a laser distance meter may be the perfect solution. Here are five quick tips to help you get the most from this useful tool.
Give and Take
Get familiar with your plus, minus, and function keys. They come in handy when you need to measure out-of-reach facades and triangles where reflective target placement isn’t possible. For example, you could measure two halves of a long wall divided by a fence, or use the Pythagoras key to measure a roof’s slope or height without climbing up a ladder.

If your laser distance meter isn’t ruggedized, handle it with care. Avoid dropping it, getting it wet, or letting dust collect on it. Wipe it off with a clean rag and store it in its case. Better yet, invest in a ruggedized, splashproof, dustproof model like the Leica DISTO E7500i, which is IP6waterjet-safe and dust-tight.
Whatever laser distance meter you use, take a few minutes to walk through the user’s manual and get familiar with your instrument. Experiment with the settings before you go on the jobsite, and you’ll save yourself time and headaches. If you’re not sure which one to buy, we’re happy to help you choose the right laser distance meter for your specific needs.
