micrometer Buyer’s Guide
Know your Tolerance.
How important is accuracy to you? Do you need to measure your material to the nearest thousandth? Hundredth thousandth? You may want to stick with a certain brand if accuracy is of utmost importance. Starrett micrometers are known for their accuracy.
Oil your Micrometer.
Every other week or so, you should apply a small amount of all-purpose oil to your micrometer. This will help fight corrosion and rust. If you plan on storing your micrometer for several weeks or months with no use, you should also oil the internal thread of your micrometer.
Mitutoyo Interchangeable Anvil Outside Micrometer Set
This Mitutoyo micrometer set is one of my favorites. Rather than having several different bodies, this set contains one micrometer body. To measure objects of different size ranges, you simply swap the current stem with one of the additional stems that are included in the set.
Favorite Features
Versatile: The interchangeable anvil stems make this micrometer capable of recording a wide range of measurements.
Space Saver: The custom wood case included with this micrometer set is super slim because it only contain one body.
Brown & Sharpe Outside Micrometer Set
We recommend this set for the working professional measuring material between 0-inches. This micrometer set by Brown & Sharpe should be looked at as a long term investment. With proper maintenance, these micrometers will last a decades.
Quality: You know your getting top quality when you buy Brown & Sharpe micrometers.
Durability: This will be the only 0-micrometer set you will ever need.
Features
This is a ¼ inch torque wrench that has a very ergonomic handle that makes it easier to use, especially if you need to put a lot of force behind the wrench when you are tightening a bolt. It is designed with a diamond sure grip design that helps keep your hands from slipping off of the tool. This torque wrench has a spring powered pull down ring that makes it easy to change the torque level of the tool with ease. Once the torque is set, it can be secured with a locking mechanism that is built into the wrench. The handle on this torque wrench is not that long, which means that it can be difficult to reach some of the bolts that you need to tighten. This is a great tool to use if you work on vehicles a lot because it has a comfortable grip that will not slip from your hands. If you are a mechanic, this may be an option to consider.
The handle is a bit short
This 3/inch torque wrench is designed with a high contrast scale that makes it easy to read and adjust the torque level; in fact, it can even be adjusted quite easily in low light. This tool is pre-calibrated to an accuracy level that is within four degrees of the torque settings so that you can use it as soon as it arrives. When the torque value is reached, a click will be heard and felt as the tool vibrates. This wrench can slip if it is being used at an odd angle, so make sure that you have a good grip before you begin ratcheting the wrench. If you are looking for a tool that is easy to use, the TEKTON 24330 is a great option that is ready to use as soon as it arrives at your door.
Accuracy is not perfect
This is a digital tool that has an LCD display that has several different modes that you can use to measure your torque settings. The display can be shown in foot pounds and inch pounds as well as other units of measurement. When you are under a vehicle trying to tighten a few bolts, the digital readout may be difficult to see, which is why this tool has an audible buzzer that is designed to let you know when the proper torque has been reached. This tool has an automatic shutoff timer that is designed to save the battery life, but it only lasts about a minute, which is a bit too short for most jobs. If you are looking for a digital wrench for your torque needs, then the ACDelco ARM6001-is a durable option that is easy to use.
Torque is not measured counter-clockwise
This CDI torque wrench is designed with a dual direction calibration, which means that it can easily be adjusted and locked into place with the spring loaded lock ring. Setting the torque that you need is fast and easy with this wrench. There is a laser-marked scale on the surface of the wrench that is designed to be easy to read. This makes it easy to make sure that the tool is set to the right level of torque. The handle on this model is made from plastic; though this is a durable material, it does take away from the life of the toque wrench. Looking for a torque wrench that is easy to calibrate, easy to use, and has a great reach? Then, this may be a great option for you to consider.
Tapered Ring Compressor
A tapered ring compressor is the absolute best and easiest way to install piston and connecting rod assemblies. The tool gently squeezes the piston rings and actually funnels the piston/ring assembly directly into the cylinder bore without damaging or breaking the rings. This particular compressor body is milled for extra grip. These ring compressors are not universal—each is designed to fit a specific size cylinder bore. Summit Racing offers tapered ring compressors for just about every cylinder bore size.
Piston Ring Filer
While many OE-replacement piston ring sets are available with pre-gapped top (compression) rings, most race-oriented ring sets have top rings designed to be hand-fit. That means ring end gap is measured and the ring is filed to fit its specific cylinder bore. A piston ring filing tool like this vintage Speed Pro tool makes the job much easier. The tool clamps or bolts to a workbench or in a vise and has a hand crank to turn the carbide filing wheel. You hold the ring against the stops and turn the crank to file one end of the ring. The carbide wheel makes quick work of piston rings, so be cautious when using it. Turn the crank slowly and use a “file, fit, file some more” procedure. You can find ring filing tools at Summit Racing, including fancy electric powered ones that are ideal if you do a lot of piston ring fitting.
Crank Socket
Sooner or later, you’re going to be turning an engine over—when degreeing a camshaft, for example. One of the best ways to spin the crank is with this simple crank socket. It fits on the end of the crankshaft and accepts a half-inch drive ratchet or breaker bar so you can easily rotate the reciprocating assembly. There are crank sockets available for most common high performance engines.
Engine Brushes
Remember what Mom said about cleanliness? It goes double when assembling an engine. Most professional engine builders clean an engine block multiple times, then wipe it clean with white towels to detect any traces of dirt and other residue. Engine brushes like the ones in this set from Summit Racing are a must-have to clean out engine oil galleries and other hard to reach spots. This set includes heavy-duty oil galley brushes, cam and lifter bore brushes, and a bolt-hole brush. If you build engines on a regular basis, be sure to replace your brushes periodically.
Degree Wheel
Degreeing a camshaft and checking valvetrain clearances are critical procedures when building a performance engine. You’ll need a degree wheel to perform those tasks. When it comes to degree wheels, three things are important: size, visibility, and adjustability. This big 1inch diameter wheel has easy to read silver graduations, plus a two-piece bushing arrangement that lets you adjust the wheel without removing it. Similar degree wheels are available at Summit Racing.
Oil Pump Primer
You know how important it is to prime the oil pump before starting up a newly rebuilt engine, right? If you don’t prime the pump, you run the risk of firing up a fresh engine without having oil between the moving parts. The result could be scuffed parts from metal-to-metal contact—or worse. An oil pump primer prevents all that. It has a drive tip that fits a standard electric drill; the bottom end fits the oil pump’s drive tang. Simply spin the oil pump with the drill and watch the oil pressure gauge. When the engine has oil pressure, remove the tool and install the pump drive shaft and the distributor. The engine is now primed and ready to fire. This well-used pump primer is from Moroso.
Valve Spring Height Micrometer
You need to determine the installed height of your valve springs so you can make sure they are properly matched to your camshaft and deliver maximum pressure without coil binding. A spring height micrometer is by far the quickest and most accurate way to measure valve spring installed height. You install the height micrometer just like you would a valve spring, then expand the tool until it has seated the valve, the valve locks, and the valve spring retainer. This simulated seat pressure allows ultra precise readings. This Crane tool is accurate to 0.00inch.
Engine Storage Cradle
Even a good quality engine stand can be a wee bit tipsy, particularly with a heavy, iron head big block bolted to it. Once your engine build is complete, it’s a good idea to install it in the car or put it on a dedicated storage cradle like this one. These cradles typically have easy-to-access mounting points—one end bolts to the bell housing flange while the other end has mounts that match the engine block’s side mounts. Summit Racing has engine cradles for virtually every popular Vengine.
Before you rotate the thimble or the ratchet knob, unlock the locking lever. Make sure to clean the measuring faces with the help of a clean cloth before you begin taking measurements. As you begin measuring, start rotating the ratchet knob and not the thimble. The ratchet knob will ensure you do not over tighten the thimble as that will not only give an erroneous reading but can damage the instrument too.
It is also advisable that you do not keep the instrument in the Sun for long. The horizontal line on the sleeve should be aligned to zero when the when the micrometer is at minimum reading. In case it does not happen, the micrometer will be needed to calibrated. For calibration, each device comes with a half-moon adjusting wrench.
Remember to use the thimble lock while micrometer is still holding the object. If you do not do this, the spindle might move a little while taking the reading or taking the object off from the micrometer. Write the measurement when the lock is on and if you haven’t written it and taken the object out, redo the measurement.
Figure. The work is placed against the anvil with the left hand while the spindle is turned down to the work with the thumb and index finger of the right hand.
You can adjust micrometers with two steps. First, to eliminate play in the spindle, back off the thimble, insert a spanner wrench (likely furnished with the micrometer) into the adjusting nut, and tighten just enough to eliminate play.
Next, to adjust to a zero reading, clean all dirt or grit from the measuring faces by gently closing the spindle to the anvil with a clean piece of paper between them. Pull the paper out with pressure applied, then close the faces and insert the spanner wrench in the small slot of the sleeve. Next, turn the sleeve until its zero line coincides with the zero line on the thimble.
For very fine measurements, the micrometer should be set to zero or to a standard by your”feel” (see ), by the friction thimble, or by the ratchet, whichever is being used.
The FABRICATOR
The FABRICATOR is North America’s leading magazine for the metal forming and fabricating industry. The magazine delivers the news, technical articles, and case histories that enable fabricators to do their jobs more efficiently. The FABRICATOR has served the industry since 1971.
High-Contrast Dual-Range Scale
When using this wrench, you can adjust its pressure and position with this high-contrast dual-range scale. It is very easy-to-read and will give you precise measurements, avoid mistakes, and keep your tool operating at a very high level.
Wide Torque Range
While all the torque wrenches on our list have limitations, this wrench has the widest range of possible torque. It has a minimum of 10-foot pounds but a maximum of about 100. As a result, it is among the most robust and adaptable of all of the wrenches include on our list.
Long Breaker Bar
Working a tough nut is not a problem with the fairly long breaker bar of this wrench. At about two feet in length, it provides you with the maximum amount of torque possible. As a result, you can easily remove just about any stubborn lug nut.
Ergonomic Grip Design
Using a torque wrench with a more comfortable handle helps streamline your operation and make everything a little more efficient. It also helps keep you from developing the kinds of problematic blisters that can derail your work for a few days.
Adjustment Knob
The easy-to-use adjustment knob eliminates problematic spring tension problems and makes it easy to quickly and efficiently adjust your tool. Even better, it can be locked into place during more repetitive uses as a way of keeping you from having to change your torque multiple times.
After you finish up with most torque wrenches, you need to turn them down to keep them operating efficiently. Thankfully, that is not a problem with this model.
Sturdy Steel Construction
All TEKTON tools come with a sturdy and reliable steel construction. As a result, you should be able to rock it with this torque wrench for years or more. With no plastic parts to wear down, it is among the sturdiest wrenches on our list.
Tighten in Sequence
If you are using your torque wrench on a multi-screw project, always tighten everything in sequence. For example, a wheel should have a particular course that you need to follow.
Typically, the sequence is done in a clockwise motion but will vary depending on the vehicle. Never tighten the nuts all the way at first. Continue to follow the sequence until you are done.
This & This
After knowing the torque value, you can easily pick desire wrenches for your need. For example, if you have Honda Civic (1984-2016) then you need 80 ft-lb force for tightening the nuts.
In this article, we have picked some wrench that are suitable for most of repairing work like tire rotation, Changing spark plug, cylinder head bolts etc.
The disappointment can bring you to tears.
Now you have to redo all the work you’ve just done. You could’ve saved yourself the time, effort, and extra cost of doing it right the first time. Using the proper procedures, but more importantly, using the right tool for the job will save you agonizing hours of redoing work you’ve just finished.
No matter if you are a mechanic in the Automotive Industry or if your hobby is to maintain or repair your own car, motorcycle, or bicycle, you need hand tools. You need tools like screwdrivers, wrench sets, Spanners, pliers, cutters, hammers and others. You definitely need the right tool for the job at hand.
Often mechanical and automotive jobs impose tight work areas, while precision and accuracy is also required. Despite years of experience, an expert mechanic can over-tighten or under-tighten a component which causes damage or breakage of vehicle parts.
In these situations we need tools which can work easily in these critical environments, provide accurate results, and alert the user to avoid over- or under Stress. For tightening of lug nuts on cars, trucks and other large vehicles, a torque wrench is the best tool for applying proper force on fasteners to get the job done precisely.

Importance of this tool in our daily life
When we apply a force to the nuts and bolts during the assembly of automobile parts, we actually apply torque for clamping the parts together. For safety measures and for the longevity of fasteners, we need proper fastening tools; tools that will precisely tighten to an exact specification.
A torque wrench is a precision tool and measures the applied force/load/tension on the threaded fasteners during assembly. It helps to achieve the specific fastening torque quickly and correctly, yet operates smoothly with minimal human effort. A properly torqued fastener remains tight during the rigors of operation and vibrations that occur and can save the vehicle from any serious damages. Inadequate tightening or poorly torque fasteners can fail suddenly during operation due to high vibrations or strain and may cause premature failures. To avoid these problems we need proper torque tools. With these problems in mind, engineers have designed torque wrenches to apply the specific amount of torque to joining the parts.
Mostly modern torque wrenches are equipped with a ratchet mechanism. It allows the user to keep the wrench on the fastener once it has reached the end of travel in the work space. The user simply turns the wrench in the opposite direction from its intended travel. The ratcheting mechanism uses a gear inside the wrench head to let the handle slip backward while the fastener remains still. It allows faster operation in a tight work space.
Application: These wrenches are used in Automotive, heavy engineering, Aeronautic, Watercraft, Fertilizers and Defense Organizations, etc.
Electronics with digital read out
This is the most expensive, but also the most reliable torque wrench. It is most commonly used where angle plus torque is required. It uses of a large backlit LED display for showing torque digitally to ensure that the users see the reading quickly and easily. It also includes a buzzer for audible noise and different LED lights to alert the mechanics that the required value has been reached. These type of wrenches usually display all types of units of torque: Inch-pounds, foot-pounds, Newton-meters, Kilogram-centimeter. The most advanced electronic torque wrenches have a feature that measures the tightening angle as well as torque. Its accuracy is unbeatable in both clockwise and counter-clockwise direction.
