mini sewing machine Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy mini sewing machine, right? No!

Who should get this

The machines we cover in this guide will fit the needs of most complete beginners and early-intermediate sewists. Whether you plan to make simple home projects (like curtains or pillows), piece together quilts, or take up sewing clothing, our picks should get you started. If you plan to make only occasional projects, or you’re looking to upgrade from an inherited crappy old machine, this guide will have great options for you.

If you’ve never touched a sewing machine before, we recommend trying one out at a dealer and purchasing one from there. Although relatively simple to operate, the mechanics of even simple manual machines can seem a little intimidating to the novice. A good dealer will be able to teach you the basics, such as winding the bobbin, replacing the needle, threading the machine, and adjusting stitches, all of which will probably save you hours of frustration trying to learn on your own. Plus, dealers often throw in complimentary sewing classes. You can read more about dealers below.

If you already have some sewing experience, explicitly know what kinds of projects you’re trying to do, or already have a cheap sewing machine, you may want to skip up to our intermediate sewing machine guide.

Pull Quote

Many people assume that new machines with plastic parts are of lower quality than old or new ones made all of metal. But this isn’t always the case.

Even if your old machine works, you still may want to upgrade simply because newer machines have more stitch options and can be easier to use. A basic new machine will allow you to do zigzag and stretch stitches, do automatic buttonholes, may feature a top-loading bobbin (which is easier to load and reduces needle jams), and may possess other features that will make sewing easier.

If you are upgrading, or just coming back to sewing after a many-year hiatus, you should consider a machine of a caliber similar to or better than the one you learned on. We read a number of user reviews from people who learned on a parent’s or grandparent’s quality machine, and were disappointed when they bought a really low-end machine. The one you learn on is usually going to be the standard by which you judge other machines.

How we picked

For the first iteration of this review, sewing bloggers Sonja Beck Gingerich of Ginger Makes and Marcy Harriell of Oonaballoona came to our testing space to provide expert guidance in testing. This year, we rounded up novice sewing volunteers from Wirecutter, and also had expert testing input from senior editor Christine Cyr Clisset and staff writer Jackie Reeve (who also wrote our intermediate sewing machine guide).

For each machine we tested basic stitches on medium-weight muslin, tested stretch and zigzag stitches on jersey, and sewed triple layers of denim (to see how well the machines handled heavy fabrics). We also sewed a quilted layer of batting sandwiched between muslin layers to test how the machines would do with basic quilting tasks. We didn’t use specific metrics for analyzing the stitch quality, but rather judged the stitches subjectively based on our past sewing experience.

To avoid brand bias, we covered all of the logos on the machines so our testers wouldn’t be swayed by their own prejudices. We also didn’t let them look at the user manuals. We wanted to see if it was easy for our testers to sit at the machines and start sewing without too much fuss.

After initial testing, we measured the noise output of each machine using the NoiSee app. Then we took the top three machines home for further stitch-quality tests on tricky fabrics like denim and jersey. Again, we judged the stitch quality based on our past sewing experience.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The Mod-1is much smaller than our prior top pick, the Magnolia 7318, both in actual size and in work surface. We find that this makes it much more portable and easier to store, but, as we mentioned, will make it harder to do things like quilting projects. The Mod-1had the smallest work surface of any machine we tested for the latest guide update.

This machine also has some plastic features—specifically, the needle plate, foot holder, and bobbin winder spindle—where the Magnolia 731was constructed from metal. Though Federman said this doesn’t necessarily sacrifice quality, we think the plastic features feel cheaper. However, you don’t need to deactivate the needle via the handwheel to refill the bobbin on the Mod-19, which is an upgrade from the Magnolia.

The Mod-1comes with only four presser feet (regular, zipper, blind hem, and sliding buttonhole). We think it’s worth buying a rolled hem foot for making narrow hems. The Mod-1does take generic feet.

How a sewing machine works

A sewing machine is basically a small motor with a casing around it. The motor operates a shaft with a needle attached that’s used to form stitches to sew fabric together. On a standard machine, a spool of thread is fitted on the top of the machine, this thread is threaded through the needle; a smaller spool of thread (called a bobbin) is fitted under the needle. The threaded needle goes through the fabric, catches the bobbin thread and pulls it back up through the fabric, forming the stitch.

Machines perform a number of different stitches. The most basic (and the most handy) is a straight stitch, which you can use for a lot of sewing tasks, including making straight seams, basting, and topstitching. A zigzag stitch has a little more stretch and strength to it, and is great for sewing stretchy knits or finishing the raw edges of seams. Here’s a good visual of both straight and zigzag stitches. New machines often have stretch stitches, specifically for sewing knits, and a variety of decorative stitches. Decorative stitches can come in handy if you quilt or want embroidery-like embellishments.

Manual vs. computerized

Manual sewing machines have very simple dials, buttons, and levers, and there have been variations on this style since Isaac Singer introduced mass-produced machines in the 1850s. Although old-school, manual machines can be very reliable and easy to use. For this review, we focused our testing on manual machines.

Care and maintenance

Although most sewing machines will be good to go out of the box, you will need to wind the bobbin and learn how to thread the machine, which the user manual can explain. These days you’ll also find tons of great online videos that can teach you about your machine. (This is a good one for winding the bobbin and threading a machine similar to the Janome Mod-19).

Most machines come with a small brush that you should use to clean lint from the bobbin case and around the feed dogs, and anywhere else you see fuzz collecting. Keeping these areas clean will help the machine run smoothly. Don’t use a can of compressed air, as this can blow the lint back inside the machine.

Some models, including the Janome HD1000, need a dab of sewing machine oil every once in a while. The Mod-1should be fine without a regular oiling, and it didn’t come with oil. The oil generally comes with the machine, and you should use only a little bit and follow your manual’s instructions.

If you are experiencing tension or stitch-quality problems, there are some things you can do to troubleshoot. First, make sure your sewing needle is inserted correctly. The flat part of the shaft should face toward the back (rounded part toward the front). Federman said that taking the bobbin out and rethreading it can often solve many problems. It’s also not a bad idea to replace the needle; a slight warp can cause a wandering stitch or other issues.

Adjusting the top-thread tension on most machines is simple, but if you find the bobbin thread is tangling or gathering on the bottom of the stitches, the bobbin tension might not be tight enough. If you’re mechanically inclined, you can increase the tension by tightening the screw on the bobbin case. We like this how-to video for a top-loading machine and this one for a front-loading machine.

The competition

Our main pick used to be the Janome Magnolia 731We would have liked to continue recommending the Magnolia, but Janome told us that the company is discontinuing this model. It has held up very well over three years of long-term testing, and we still think it’s worth buying if you can find it.

We used to recommend the Singer 441Heavy Duty as our budget sewing machine pick. For the same cost, or sometimes less, you can get the Singer 442Heavy Duty (our runner-up pick) instead. We prefer the 442for its wider range of stitches—the 441lacks stretch stitches—at a similar price.

The Brother ST371HD was among our testers’ least favorite machines. The dials felt cheap when we turned them, and the stitching on this machine was very uneven. Plus, it was loud when it ran. These issues combined were a dealbreaker for us.

From the most popular brands like brother, singer, Janome and Juki sewing machines, I narrowed it down to 15.

Yes! 15 top rated sewing machines for 201that offers the best bang for your bucks and still delivers exceptional stitches.

I have consulted some sewing professional, read lots of consumer’s reviews, got feedback from some users and even use some of these sewing machines.

Singer 9960 sewing machine comes with exclusive buttonholes under plate, stitch elongation, and mirror imaging options that provides options to customize sewing projects. You can control the exact look of a stitch pattern with its built-in Stitch editing capabilities.

The Bad!!

As a professional grade sewing machine, the left positioning of the needle makes sewing tedious. Adjusting and adapting to the new position will take a little while.

Likewise, the use of screwdriver to change the walking tool will cause a little discomfort.

Brother SE400

Built to prove that sewing is an art, this is one of the most wanted sewing machine, unique for its multitasking ability. Brother SE400 is a computerized sewing and embroidery machine that will bring out the artist in you.

What’s the point!

There’s too much to mention about Brother SE400 in terms of features. One thing you should know is that this is in machine. Meaning you can use it for sewing and specialized embroidery. There’s a 4” by 4” embroidery frame and 6Built-in Stitches to play with.

While the frame provides enough space for designing, the in-built LCD screen allows easy choice in choosing embroidery designs.

You can even edit and import designs from the internet to the Brother SE400, that’s if you don’t find any of the pre-installed 70 applicable. Aside the availability of thousands of designs from the internet, you can also upgrade the firmware whenever there’s a new one.

One negative thing about SINGER 725award winning sewing machine is that it’s too much value for money. Cheap for what you get at such price. Singer Stylist has almost everything a sewer needs and even more except the monogramming capability.

Here’s the deal

If you are a stylist or you are looking for an entry to intermediate level option that can do lot more then, Singer 725Stylist fits the bill. It offers a large variety of stitches for all the types of sewing, including fashion sewing, heirloom, quilting, crafts, decorative and home sewing.

The electronic automatic pilot feature and the speed control offers sewer full charge of sewing speed. This feature makes sewing challenging parts easier to sew and error-free. Singer 725makes threading so easy that you can easily thread an entire machine from spool to needle’s eye within six seconds.

Dial Stitch Selection

Even if you’ve never used a sewing machine once in your life, using Brother XL26will just come natural.

Navigating through any of the 2built in stitches and using the double needles will be easy and straight forward. Talking about portability, 1lbs is easy to carry around by kids and teenagers.

Another feature that you will find useful is the automatic button-holer and the free arm for making hems, cuffs and sleeves.

Threading and cutting the thread is usually not so easy for beginners, which is why the automatic threader and thread cutter will be very useful.

That’s not all!

Despite looking beautiful; don’t see the beauty as a weakness, the strong motor powers through any fabric even upholstery. Not having to make use of the foot pedal is one advantage the machine has over many others; just do it all with the start/stop button.

Not much issues!

There are hardly any fundamental flaws except the inability to adjust the presser foot.

However, with the convenient and easy handling ensured by the buttons, and ability to handle different fabric thickness, Janome Magnolia 7330 is one of the Best Janome Sewing Machine you should consider.

On the downside!

Likewise the number of stitches available is limited to less than 20. For heavy duty work like fixing some leather, bags, or jeans its quite enough.

From first look, Brother PQ1500SL has the aesthetic of a sewing machine that appeals to the oldies, but has the heart and strength of the younger generation.

That’s where it derives the ability and manipulation of handling the most difficult of materials from Suede, Velvet and even Leather.

Brother SE1800

One thing has been the unique selling point of Brother SE1800; the cute and elegant look.

However, beyond the good looks of the embroidery machine is its high quality performance. Be ready to get ultra-creative and exceptional with arrays of features this sewing machine boasts of.

USB Attachment

If you check the specifications or features, it goes on and on, too much to be in just a single sewing machine. With 13designs and lettering fonts, imagine what you can bring out of every fabric.

Even to a beginner embroiderer, there’s a level of simplicity and ease the machine offers with the automated features which is also beneficial even to expert users.

Despite the strong motor and power the noise level is still bearable even in low noise environment or at night.

Purpose of Sewing

Ask yourself what do you need the machine for? And what would be the major task. Would it be stitching, embroidery, monogramming, for heavy thick clothes or for general task. Some machines are adapted mostly for one or two major task.

Although there are sewing machine that can do almost all task, but most good sewing machine is built for only one or more primary task.

So, keeping this in mind would help you to narrow down your search from many.

One important feature that should be considered, is the type and number of available stitch.

With these two, you can fashion out almost everything you need. However, consider what stitch you require the most and if you are limited by budget make some trade off.

Size and Weight

The size of a sewing machine must be considered. A heavy one can be an issue especially if you need to move around with it or you need to take it to classes.

In other aspect, very light sewing machine could also be worrisome especially if you sew hard or heavy fabric. The balance is needed here depending on your need and purpose of use.

Preferred brand

No doubt like anyone looking to buy a new product, you may already have a favorite brand in mind. You must have read through the list of the best sewing machine brands. If you have not, consider Singer, Juki, Janome, or Brother sewing machine.

Always endeavor to purchase from a known brand with track record of quality and consistency.

Controls and Ergonomic

This is 201and sewing machines have gone automated and computerized; don’t be left out of the trend with an outdated tools.

Required Accessory

When dealing with a sewing machine the use of accessory cannot be neglected. In-fact the more accessory you have the more easily it is to manipulate your fabric and create many beautiful styles.

Some comes with quite some few numbers of accessories while some come with so much that you really don’t need to spend extra on accessory.

You should consider sewing machine with a lot more accessory to choose from. This will make you versatile save you cash, and make your work a lot easier.

Instruction Manual

Sewing machines are becoming more sophisticated and advanced with plenty features to deal with. You cannot know it all in little time. You need a manual to learn over a period.

Ensure anyone you are going to buy comes with a detailed instructional manual in your preferred language. This would save you some confusion.

For professionals

SINGER 9960 is the perfect sewing machine to consider and invest in. Apart from being popular among many other professional the 99XX series or family has so many features. I would personally pick this if I am a Singer type.

Brother Project Runway PC420PRW computerized sewing machine.

For professionals yet to achieve the skills needed to be called an expert, recommending SINGER 725would be ideal. Even though any individual can use it, beginners will find the simplicity and automated features advantageous.

Brother CS6000i is the right sewing machine to start out with and learn their way up.

JUKI TL-2000Qi Sewing and Quilting Machine is another excellent option that deserves recommendation. With ability to produce high speed, quality and clean stitches, this machine can also quilt perfectly. So if you really need to get quilting job done fast, you should consider the Juki TL-2000Qi.

Embroidery is an important segment of sewing and I recommend Brother SE400 if you need a machine that can sew and embroider. Its price is reasonable and it’s also quite easy to use.

For industrial task, I tend to stick with Juki sewing machine.

Juki DDL 8870 with the less noisy servo motor is recommended here especially if you just want to churn out many products.

Which Stitch for You

Straight stitch: This type of sewing machine is more economical. This machine sews only forward and backward. Straight stitch machine is most practical machine for you, if you want to sew only a little and does not intend to use decorative stitching. Some manufacturer provide attachments to make zigzag stitch, ruffles or buttonholes.

Basic zigzag machine: This type of sewing machine can perform all the functions that a straight stitch machine can, in addition this sewing machine has the ability to do zigzag and stretch stitching. They can also make buttonholes, finish seam edges and blind hem.

Automatic zigzag sewing machine: This type of sewing machine has built-in decorative stitches that are selected with hand controls or cams that are inserted for the desired stitch, or a combination of the two. The combination model is the most versatile. This sewing machine is best of you desire to sew decorative stitches quiet often. But make sure you have through knowledge of the machine to use it to its full potential.

Electronic or computerized sewing machine: This type of sewing machine is controlled by electronic chips. The electronic system allows stitches to be selected by pushing a button. Different settings like stitch width, length and density are programmed into the machine by the manufacturer, but these settings can also be adjusted later on.

Consider the cost

You could spend thousands of rupees and buy the most expensive do-it-all machine, but will you need it?. Beside the most expensive not necessarily means the best. Buy the sewing machine depending upon your need and the one that fits into your budget. Stay away with the cheap un-branded machines, they do not last long and give lot of headaches during stitching. A good sewing machine can easily last more than 20 years.

Important Terminology

In this article I’m going to break down the best sewing machines on the market.  I’ll talk about the features you NEED and some features that are NICE, but not NECESSARY.  The products I’m covering will range in performance from advanced to those well suited to beginners.

At the end of this article you should know exactly what you need.  Whenever I’m looking to buy something new I like to ask myself a few questions to help me sort out EXACTLY what I need.

Sewing Machine

Not all of them are necessary, but many of them offer significant time savings.

Features of the HZL-F600

The Juki comes with an extra wide work area at 8.5”x12”.  This is 4” larger than what you get with most machines. It also comes with an extension table, further expanding the work area.

Like the models above, a knee bar for hands-free presser foot lifting makes English-paper piecing much smoother. The automatic thread trimmer can be activated using the foot pedal or a button on the face of the machine.

Box feed technology has been applied to this machine, increasing the stitch quality and eliminating stitch shrinkage and shifting.

For sewing clothes, the machine contains1types of built-in buttonholes and 600 different stitch patterns, including numbers and letters. A large LCD display makes pattern selection easy as pie. The automatic buttonholer makes buttonholing a breeze- the button is placed on the foot, and the machine makes the proper sized buttonhole.

The HZL-F600 also comes with a bevy of feet to get you off on the right “foot,” including a walking foot, quilt pressing foot, edge sewing presser foot, and patchwork presser foot.

The extra wide work space allows you to handle all sorts of tasks.  The automatic thread trimmer allows you to use the foot pedal keeping your hands free.  The build quality means you’ll be able to count on this machine for YEARS to come.

This is a great all-in one sewing machine! The reason for it’s second place finish was simply because it has less working space than our top pick.

It is important to note that this Janome model uses a straight stitch only. If you are planning to sew clothing with buttonholes, or enjoy finishing projects with specialty stitches, this model may not be your best option.

The max speed is 1600 stitches per minute, and the speed control slider makes it easy to adjust to a speed at which you are comfortable working.

Features of the MC-6300P

The Janome 6300P allows stitches to be selected easily and painlessly, with the push of a few simple buttons. 6stitches and different buttonholes are easily accessible, and an LED display provides easy-to-read information. The low-bobbin indicator light eliminates the nasty surprise of an empty bobbin.

Great for quilting!

In addition to a large working area of 8.8”x4.7”, a clear extension table is included with this machine along with the free-motion foot.

The free motion foot allows for lots of creativity.  You can “doodle” your own free hand designs into the fabric.  For those looking for a bit more flexibility, the Janome MC-6300P sewing machine is a great choice.

If you are planning on quilting then you’ll want to look for a model with different options than many of those I’ve included here.  Here is another article that specifically talks about the top sewing machines for quilting.

Many of the models in this price range will have the same features as the more expensive models. Features such as auto thread trimming and feeding, knee-lever foot control, and needle up/down buttons are found in both price tiers.

However, where it may seem like all of the bells and whistles are present, you may compromise on speed and power versus the more expensive versions. And vice versa – the faster units may not have as much functionality as the slower machines.

For a beginner seamstress, high speed is not going to be as important as functionality, or even desired. It takes time and practice to become comfortable speed-feeding fabric through a machine. If you are a beginner with a budget, there are some products in this price range that will be suitable for you. The lower price tier will also have some units that are more appropriate for beginners.

Most of the sewing products in this tier are geared toward experienced seamstresses, or those who plan to devote themselves. If you are beginner looking to purchase a machine that will grow with you and offer more functionality, make sure to get one with a speed-control option. This way, you are able to limit it to a speed at which you are completely comfortable.

Did we say the models in this price range might compromise on speed? Well, this machine is the exception.

Geared toward quilters, the Juki TL-2000Qi can pack a whopping 1500 SPM, which is the fastest of all of the sewing machines we have reviewed. But be advised. Like the Janome 1600P-QC, this guy will only sew a straight stitch. If you plan to sew drapes, pillows, or other basic items, this unit will help you to get the job done fast.

Please be aware that at 1500 SPM, this product is really not recommended for those who are just learning to sew. A slower machine with more stitch options, such as a zig zag, satin, or blind hem, is recommended for beginners.

Like the more expensive options, the TL-2000Qi comes with an automatic needle-threader and a trimmer than can be activated with the foot pedal. It also includes a knee lever to lift the presser foot while using both hands to hold the fabric in place.

One potential downside to this sewing machine is the thread tension adjustment. It has manual tension adjustment, where the more expensive machines will have automatic tension adjustment.

It comes with a standard presser foot, 1/inch quilt foot, even-feed foot, auxiliary extension table, knee lift lever, plus basic maintenance tools.

The Singer S-1is a sturdy, powerful sewing machine at a great price. This unit has a heavy-duty metal frame and produces even, impeccable stitches. It is intuitive and user-friendly straight out of the box.

The added convenience of a knee-lever for lifting or dropping the presser foot, the programmable needle up/down function, and the extra large sewing space make this a great machine for quilters. The extension table adds space for larger projects.

For sewing clothing, the 400 built-in stitches, seven automatic buttonholes, and abundant included feet are wonderful.  Sleeves could be difficult t sew on this machine, as the base does not adjust to a smaller size.

At 1,000 stitches per minute, this sewing machine will get an experienced seamstress through large projects quickly. The variable speed control will allow a beginner to work their way up to higher speeds. So this machine is an excellent choice for a beginner seamstress, or an experienced seamstress looking to upgrade.

This unit comes with everything you need to get started sewing, including an all-purpose foot, button sewing foot, overedge foot, narrow rolled hem foot, zipper foot, satin stitch foot, blind hem foot, cording foot, overcasting foot, buttonhole foot, darning and freehand foot, quarter inch foot, walking foot, and open toe foot.

It also comes with screwdrivers, lint brush, thread spool caps, needles, seam ripper, bobbins, edge / quilting bars, knee lifter, adjustable seam guide, instruction manual, quick start guide, power cord, foot controller, accessory storage box.

These products are a great upgrade from the more basic, lower budget machines on the market. If you purchase a product in this price range, you can expect quality basic stitching and sturdy construction.

Models in this price range are great for a serious home sewist that is planning to make not only basic home décor, but perhaps also clothing for the family. Clothing can be made with a basic, low-budget machine, but you will likely be more pleased with the outcome when using a higher-grade model. Plus, a better built product will last longer.

This is also the price range where we may start to see such automated features as needle threading, thread cutting, and the needle up/down option. Specialty stitches and embellishments make the machines in this price bracket a fun option, though not everyone needs or wants these features. Some users may see the additional features as unnecessary, with more parts.

While a beginner could start out with a sewing machine in this category, we would recommend one of the cheaper options further down the list.  If you find you (or the person you’re giving it to) enjoy sewing, then you can upgrade to a better machine at a later date.

This sewing machine is a great option for a beginner, as it performs all of the stitches required for basic home décor and clothing, including a straight stitch, blind hem, zig zag stitch, and it allows width and length adjustment. It also offers 1built-in stitches and one four-step buttonhole.

A free arm allows sleeves and pant legs to be hemmed with ease. At just 1pounds, this machine can be easily tucked away when not in use. Snap-on presser feet make switching feet quick and easy.

Like other budget models, the work space on this model is fairly small, at 6.5”x4.7”. This is a normal amount of working space for a machine in this price tier, but it is a bit small for bulky projects and large scale quilting.

Out of the box, this sewing machine will come with a multi-purpose foot, blind-hem foot, a zig zag foot, and sliding buttonhole foot. It also comes with three extra bobbins, a screwdriver, seam ripper, and set of spare needles. You may also be able to find different bundle deals available, offering additional feet, needles, and bobbins.

This Singer Quantum offers specialty stitches and features some of the bells and whistles of the fancier machines, including automatic needle threading, needle up/down control, and auto thread cutter.

Unlike some of the cheaper models out there, the feed dogs on the 9960 can be disengaged to allow for free-motion sewing.  A speed control slider lets you choose you stitches per minute. Tension is controlled automatically, as is the stitch length and width. Comes with 600 built-in stitches and 1automatic, 1-step buttonholes.

This machine will be useful for small quilting jobs, basic home décor sewing, personal clothing, and embellishments.

It comes with an assortment of presser feet, including an adjustable bias binder foot, single-welt cording foot, braiding foot and guide, stitch-in-the-ditch foot for seams and edges on quilts, fancy-trim foot, clear piping foot, clearance plate, all-purpose foot, zipper foot, button sewing foot, satin stitch foot, buttonhole foot with underplate, open toe foot, blind hem foot, overcasting foot, narrow hem foot, cording foot, 1/4-inch foot, darning & embroidery foot, even feed foot, and the basics: a pack of needles, bobbins, seam ripper, brush, auxiliary spool cap, spool pin felt, screwdrivers, thread spool caps, seam guide, and quilting bar.

You may also consider one of the newer models of this unit, the Singer Quantum Stylist 9970, which is the same basic machine but with more accessories and stitches.

The models in this price bracket are cheap, basic, and easy to use straight out of the box. The speeds of these machines will vary.  To an experienced seamstress, they will likely seem slow. But for beginners, they will work well.

Inexpensive But Capable

So what are these particular units good for? Basic clothing repairs including patching and hemming. Making lightweight clothing. They will work well for basic home décor using normal weight fabrics, including drapes, pillow covers, and table linens. These are great machines to have around the house for the occasional seamstress.

They are not recommended for large-scale quilting or heavy-duty upholstery projects. They are not recommended for commercial use. They are not recommended for use with thick leather.

This super lightweight machine is perfect for beginners! It’s great for sewing basic clothing and home décor, such as throw pillows, curtains, tablecloths, napkins, and more. For home clothing sewers, the free-arm design allows for quick access to collars, sleeves, and pant hems.

It has 2different stitches, which can be accessed via a dial on the front panel. For those who are intimidated by buttons, this machine also offers a 1-step button-holer.

If you are interested in dabbling with quilting, the feed dogs will drop to allow for free motion sewing.

At just 1pounds, this machine is ideal for the occasional or on-to-go seamstress. It is light enough to take anywhere, and easy to stow away when not in use.

A built-in accessory storage compartment contains a selection of accessory feet including a zig zag foot, buttonhole foot, button sewing foot, zipper foot, narrow hemmer foot, and blind stitch foot. Other accessories include a darning plate, accessory bag with needle pack, twin needle, extra spool pin, screwdriver, bobbins (3), power cord and operation manual.

This is a great machine for beginners, even children. It comes with basic feet, including an all-purpose foot, zipper foot, and a buttonhole foot.

It also comes with a darning plate, pack of needles, bobbins, needle plate, screwdriver, spool pin felts, seam ripper, lint brush, foot control, and soft-sided dust cover.

The 130will perform a variety of basic stitches including straight, satin, zig zag, blind hem, scallop, and a 4-step buttonhole. A dial on the front allows for easy stitch selection.

Tension is regulated automatically, as is stitch length and stitch width. This is a good feature for beginners as it eliminates guesswork and the frustration involved with adjusting settings. Twin needle sewing is also possible with this model as it has dual spool pins.

It is free arm convertible, meaning the user will have an easier time working with sleeves, pant hems, collars, and cuffs. The machine has an internal metal frame for durability and stitch consistency.

This is not a great unit for quilters or aspiring quilters, as the working space is too small to comfortably work on a large, bulky project.

Singer is a trusted manufacturer, with excellent customer service.

There is a newer version of this model available, the Singer 123Sewing Machine. The newer version appears to be very much the same machine, but with a carrying bag, access to an online class, and decorative decals for personalizing the machine. The 123version is more expensive than the 1304; I would only consider buying this new version as a gift.

Important Terminology

Thread tension management can be incredibly frustrating for beginners and experienced seamstresses alike. Automatic thread tension helps to reduce the frustration. The user simply “tells” the sewing machine what fabric is being used, ensures that the correct needle is inserted, and the unit does the rest.

Ajustable Stitch Length One option that comes in very handy is an adjustable stitch length.  This allows you to give the stitch a slightly different look to a finished hem.  You won’t typically find this on lower priced sewing machines, but it’s worth having if you’re going to be sewing a great deal.

Number of Stitches

All models will offer, at minimum, a straight stitch. Most models will offer a zig zag stitch as well, and then you get into stretch stitches, blind hems, etc.

When a unit has hundreds of stitches, there are often a host of decorative stitches including alphabet letters, numbers, flowers, and much more.

Some seamstresses find these to be worthless, others find them to be fun and an additional way to express their creativity.

Motor Size

Knowing the type of materials you’ll be working with can help you determine how strong of a motor you’ll need.  Denim, leather, and quilting materials are tough and can take a toll on a sewing machine that utilizes plastic parts instead of metal.  A stronger motor will also operate on heavy duty materials more quickly.

The downside to a strong motor is that they tend to weigh more.  If you’re not planning on moving your machine very often this isn’t a big deal, but if you need it to be portable keep this in mind.

The next step up from mechanical, electronic sewing machines offer more functions and require less manual operation from the sewer.  Some features include stitch length adjustment, tension adjustment, and automatic thread cutting.  They even have certain stitches pre-programmed so that all you have to do is enter the stitch and it takes care of the rest.  One example of an electric model is the Janome HD1000.

Other features of the Singer 7258

Overall, this is a very straightforward machine perfect for beginners. It comes with a five minute fast-start guide to get you going quickly and then you can get to know your machine as you practice. It is a great all-around machine to use for alterations, making clothes, quilts, blankets, etc.

SINGER One Easy-to-Use Computerized Sewing Machine

Here is another popular, reasonably priced, and beginner friendly sewing machine from Singer. The Singer One Computerized Sewing Machine differs from the Singer 725above in look and overall features.

The Singer One has 2built-in stitches, which is still more than enough to cover all of your sewing projects. It also has a larger work space, which is great for those bigger projects like quilts, blankets, curtains, etc.  It sews at 750 stitches per minute for fast and accurate sewing.

Brother vs Singer Sewing Machines

If you dabble in sewing or want to save money, a mechanical machine will work perfectly.  To operate these devices, you manipulate the controls by hand.  Additionally, you can fix basic problems when the machine needs repairs.  Mechanical machines are great for hems and other simple projects.

Electronic Machines

If you are an experienced sewer or have a larger budget, an electronic model might be the best option.  Instead of operating the controls by hand, you rely more on the machine and its computer system.  Many of these machines have LED screens that make the job simple.  Say goodbye to your piping and top stitching problems as the built in settings handle these issues.

Machine controls and ergonomics

Think of the sewing machine like a car.  You want the pedals to be responsive and and the machine response to match the exact pressure you apply on the pedal.  Additionally, the controls should be simple for your convenience.  Many electronic machines have touch screen controls that make operation easy.

Button-holer  You want a button-holer that is automatic.  This saves you time and will greatly decrease the chance of an error.

How We Picked and Tested

Our team has spent years crafting and configuring this guide.  In four years, we’ve examined around 20 models of sewing and embroidery machines.  Even better, we have tested the majority ourselves.  No sewing machine is perfect, but we consider these the best on the market.

Our team took months to fully understand and test these machines.  We looked at them from a community based usage where they were tested weekly.  To come up with the list of the best sewing machine for beginners we examined how well they sewed and every important feature they were equipped with.  Additionally, we looked at their needle positioning, foot pressure, and the ease of lettering fonts.  We also looked at the sewing machine’s construction, button-holing quality, and more important features.

Before we conducted this research, we had to find a great team to carry out this lengthy process.  Luckily, we surrounded ourselves with experts in the field.  Not only do they have a passion for sewing, they are completely knowledgeable in the latest hardware.  Our experts understand the level of precision and detail these machines require.  As sewing people ourselves, we get the struggle of creating something.  This is why we chose only the best products that will help you alter or construct that perfect garment.

Included in our team are some of the most professional and skilled stitchers.  They have experience in sewing anywhere from to 30 plus years.  The goal is to be brutally honest so you can make an intelligent and informed purchase.  Our stitchers and experts use many of these machines for professional and personal use.  There is strong credibility in practicing what you preach.

With all these various factors in mind, we picked out the most effective sewing machines on the market.

Noise and other features

The machine not only runs quietly, but it feels sturdy while you work.  It’s made with materials that ensure the machine to run efficiently for years to come.  Even at a high speed, the machine will run quietly compared to other brands.  Professionals and all levels of stitchers have praised the machine for its ability to handle different projects.  Whether it’s a complex or simple project, the machine can handle it with ease and precision.  It can handle intricate details like stitching your own design.

The machine also contains an auto-sizing button-hole program that will save you time.  With this feature, you can create different types of button-holes. This differs from other models that only have a single style for button-holes.

This product works great for mending and other light jobs.  Despite its compact size, it offers a powerful punch.  The speed settings are great for beginners who are looking to grow.  They can start at the slow speed and once they grow in skill, graduate to the fast speed.  The reverse stitching is something we don’t usually see in beginner sewing machines.  It is great knowing you can reverse stitch to reinforce some of your work.  The built in settings are perfect for beginners and more experienced sewers.  Beginners can find their balance with the perfect amount of variety.

User friendliness

We found this machine was extremely easy to use, especially for beginners.  Next to each button you can find a small diagram.  The image explains which each button does.  This is geared toward beginners but a great tool for all ages.  The diagrams are in black and the entire machine is in white.  This makes it very easy to read and find the buttons.  It also contains an LED light that will help you focus on your project.

Noise and other features  The machine makes moderate noise that won’t bother most.  It is also extremely small and light so you can transport it easily.  Additionally, you can easily store it in a closet without taking up too much space.  We find it to be one of the best sewing machines for Beginners.

List of other products we tested

With so many sewing machines on the market, it can be difficult to find one that best suits your needs.  We hope that our list of the best sewing machines for beginners has cleared the air of confusion and made your selection simpler.  Every product on this list is recommended.  We have tested and reviewed each model personally.  Before picking a machine, make sure its features fit your specific needs.  Look at the accessories and designs you know you want.  Once you break these machines up by different categories, your choice will become easier.

Perfect for Larger Quilts

Below you will find some of the best quilting sewing machines that are perfect for the beginning quilter. The sewing machines in this list are inexpensive, have excellent reviews without losing any of the must-have features or accessories.

Brother CS6000i Computerized Sewing Machine

Included are 60 stitches, styles of 1-step buttonholes, auto-needle threader and for your quilting needs, a quilting table. The table is a nice touch and makes it much easier when creating  your quilt. Thicker quilts are also a breeze to work with thanks to the walking foot and the handy quilting guide will space out your stitching evenly.

Brother Project Runway Sewing Machine

The Brother XR9500PRW is another popular entry level sewing machine. It is very similar to the CS6000i above, but has a few more features and a bit more expensive.

The Brother HC1850 sewing machine is another step up from the previous Brother XR9500PRW sewing machine. The features are again, a bit more advanced and therefore a bit more expensive.

This Brother sewing and quilting machine includes 130 stitches, styles of step buttonholes, auto-needle threader and also includes an over-sized quilting table. This machine can sew, quilt and embroider with ease. For quilters, the decorative stitches, like the feather stitch can be used over seams or to appliqué along edges.

Juki TL-2000qi Sewing and Quilting Machine

This Juki quilter is a true workhorse; it achieves speeds of 1500 stitches per minute, has auto-needle threader and its aluminum die cast frame reduces vibration while you work. You will find that the stitch quality this machine consistently delivers will surpass even your biggest expectations. It produces flawless results with any stitch you ask it to perform and does so quickly and efficiently. The instructions are a bit sparse for this machine, but I found tons of videos on YouTube that were great in helping to learn the functions of this machine.

When looking for an advanced quilter that is able to handle all types of fabric and multiple layers then you really do get what you pay for. This Juki sewing and quilting machine is able to handle anything you throw at it and is a great buy for anyone who is serious about their quilting.

Janome MC-6300p Heavy Duty Sewing Machine

A sewing machine for kids must have good speed control. It should be able to adjust to your child’s expertise and level. Kids will get frustrated if they feel that their sewing machine is running away from them and that they don’t have any control over it. It’s good for the sewing machine to have an automatic stop so it won’t keep operating when it runs into some resistance and might even hurt the child.

Brand Name

There are many sewing machines on the market today, but it never hurts to buy a machine with a brand name that has a track record of quality. Singer is one of the most recognized names in the industry and has a stellar reputation for well-built, basic machines. Singer sewing machines come with easy to follow diagrams and instructions. Three models that will be discussed here today are the Singer 3232, the Singer 1304, and the Singer 2259.

Brother sewing machines are also very highly regarded by parents who want good quality machines that have excellent stitch quality and can deal with a bit of rough handling. Here we look at the Brother XL26001, the Brother LS21251, the Brother XM1010, and the Brother XM2701.

The Janome brand has become increasingly popular for its safety features and multiple options that children and adults can appreciate. Today’s contenders are the Janome Fastlane and the Janome Hello Kitty machines.

Rounding out our list is the fabulous Michley-Tivax Lil’ Sew & Sew. This is a high quality, lightweight, relatively inexpensive machine that children will love to carry around. It works well for basic mending without expensive, unnecessary, extras.

Automatic Needle Threaders

Ask any kid who has tried to work on a sewing machine without an automatic threader and they will tell you. It’s far better and safer to pick a machine that has this option. Kids will be able to immediately get right into their sewing project without extra muss and fuss.

Large Dials

Kids will definitely appreciate a sewing machine that has a large stitch selection dial, preferably located front and center for easy access. Easily accessible tension dials and reverse levers also get a high mark from children beginning to sew.

For Kids

Young sewers will appreciate its light weight, many sewing options, and built-in needle threader.

This inexpensive sewing machine is a dream machine for young sewers. With a rating of stars, the Brother XM270is lightweight (7.pounds), has a one-step auto-size buttonhole, an instructional DVD, and fast-change sewing feet (zipper, buttonhole, zigzag, blind stitch, narrow hemmer, and button). In addition, this fabulous machine has a needle threader that’s built in, a top drop-in bobbin that’s jam resistant, an entirely automatic bobbin-winding system, and a bright LED work area.

The Brother XM270has a complete range of easy-to-use features that will please beginners, as well as intermediate sewers who are looking for adaptability. Its built-in free arm is specially made to simplify sewing cuffs, pant legs, and sleeves. Just turn the dial to select a stitch, and touch a lever on the machine’s side to automatically thread the needle.

Extra high-speed

Think about this for a moment. This machine has six basic, seven stretch and eighteen decorative stitches. SINGER 443also has one auto button hole that provides enough muscle for crafting and decor while sewing.

For a professional sewer, this machine has four presser feet that will cover a lot of projects with so much ease.

Very Sturdy

The first thing that you will probably notice is how relatively heavy the machine is. It is made of a metal frame that is thick and strong enough to stitch through leather or jeans. The metal frame also makes this machine suitable for all your sophisticated jobs and increases its durability.

What to Watch Out For

You will have no problem of punching through tough fabrics such as denim and canvas when using this machine. However, make sure that you fix the bobbin case correctly as shown in the manual to avoid wrong timings of it while stitching.

Get this; Brother ST371HD has a convertible free arm that makes sewing hem cuffs a lot easier as compared to other heavy-duty machines.

The impressive part about this machine is that the bobbin case is accessible and you can fix all the bobbins without struggling. Moreover, once you fix them correctly, they stay in place.

Unique Features

The 3in-built stitches in this machine are responsible for the proper functioning of Brother ST371HD. One of the key qualities that sewers look for in a heavy-duty machine is the ability to do free-motion stitching.

If you are into designing and crafting, then the stretch and decorative stitches in this machine will make your life easier. They are known for making designs stand out and seem unique.

We are in love with the stitch selector that is just operated like a dial pad. The machine produces an output of the 3stitches which you can choose from.

The Brother ST371HD also has a bobbin system which you can quickly drop in the bobbin case. This system is designed to hold the bobbins in place and allow free motion stitching.

And another thing, Brother ST371HD is manufactured with the necessary amount of oil applied so that you don’t have to worry about periodical oiling.

It is not endowed with all the incredible qualities, but it has all the essential features that make it compelling. Let’s dig a little deeper.

It has a 1.0 amp motor that makes your work easier by sewing swiftly through fabric up to three layers thick. You can use this power to create hem cuffs through the multiple layers without it slowing down or bunching.

The 1decorative and utility stitches are accessible in the front part; therefore, you can quickly change to the option that you want by using the stitch selection dial.

Sometimes, all you are looking for in a heavy duty sewing machine is power and precision when dealing with tough fabric.

Whether you are looking for a machine that can sew tough leather or just do regular repairs, this machine can get the job done.

Easy to Use

It can easily sew through heavy-duty materials without looking like it’s trying. Though it’s an industrial machine, Sailrite heavy-duty Ultra feed LSZ-1 can equally sew through silk like butter without leaving any marks.

The beauty of having a heavy-duty industrial machine is that it is powerful enough to punch through multiple layers of fabric. This machine makes sewing done by other machines look like child’s play, particularly when leather is concerned.

Its teeth are solid and sturdy to hold the fabric’s stitches firmly. Knowing how to control the tension between the teeth can be the difference between a beautiful and a marred product.

Full of Features

This model of Sailrite is made to sew through ten layers of canvas and eight layers of Dacron with no issues. For its price, it is quite fast with a speed of 600 stitches per minute. Its power will inspire you to take on more projects in future that are labor intensive.

Sailrite LSZ-is powerful and precise in the way it sews layered fabrics. It has a power balance wheel which offers so much more muscle than traditional wheels.

But that’s not all; this machine has a great clutching system that ensures swift power transfers during its operation. This wheel and clutching system make LSZ-a high-end model and that is why it is much more expensive than any other heavy-duty sewing machine.

Amazing Features

Brother PQ1500SL is endowed with essential features that you can only dream of as a quilter. It can also be used by a seamstress.

The size of its table which is 1by 1inches provides ample space for bulky quilting and repairing materials.

The location of the bobbin case is perfect and makes it easy to adjust a bobbin without losing the thread.

Don’t forget to readjust the tension on the bobbin and the presser foot pressure to get consistent stitches. The four feed dog settings and free motion quilting make straight stitching possible and easy.

Brother PQ1500SL boasts a FAST needle threader that makes the speed of this machine stand out from other heavy-duty sewing machines. Being an industrial machine, it produces 1500 stitches per minute making it the perfect machine for sewing through multi-layered fabric without bunching.

Brother PE770 Embroidery-Only

Your design options are virtually unlimited with the PE770. In addition to the built-in designs, you can import designs using either a Brother memory card or a USB stick.
