HPA Tank should you get?  It depends on the size and pressure (how many shots you want vs weight and size) and if you want an adjustable regulator.  For the most part the premium tanks have output pressure options and the carbon fiber style are made with a lighter material.

Whats HPA?  HPA stands for High Pressure Air.  It can also be referred to as Compressed Air or Nitrogen.  Whether it is compressed air or nitrogen that is being put inside the tank, the tanks are the same.  There isn’t really a difference in performance as far as paintball is concerned.  Either gas may be provided by your local filling station.  HPA Tanks are filled by pressure rating.  This is why HPA Tanks have a pressure gauge.  For every shot, the tank pressure drops.   This will give you a reading of how full, or empty the tank is.

The big perk of using HPA Tanks comes from the gas itself.  Since it is only a gas, it is a lot cleaner and it can be consistently regulated.  It’s regulated pressure isn’t affected by temperature or rate of flow (rate of fire).  All paintball HPA Tanks have a regulator that gives you a usable output pressure for paintball. This standard pressure is 800 psi.  Some HPA Tank regulators are adjustable and can be set to a lower pressure.

Always protect your 3000 to 4500 PSI vessel with a Tank Cover.  They are not just for style.  Tank Covers help protect the HPA Tank surface from damage that could make it unsafe and cost you your tank.

Be sure you have a local shop or field that can do HPA fills.  Filling an HPA Tank requires a specialized compressor or booster that can handle the higher pressures.  A regular shop compressor runs at 150 – 200 psi, not the 3000-4500 psi that paintball tanks are rated for.  Another option for personal filling is to do equalization fills off of a scuba tank.  This requires a specific scuba fill station, and is not recommended for multiple players.  Scuba tanks will only fill to a lower psi capacity, and you are doing an equalization fill.  That means your next fill is never as good as your last.

Filling Paintball Cylinders

Cylinders must be filled by an approved filler who holds a current fillers certificate. Their certificate will identify the type of gasses that they are allowed to fill (in paintball’s case compressed air and CO2).

These certificates are easy to obtain for high pressure air, and can be arranged via dive shops that offer PADI or SCUBA training, or hazardous substances consultancies such as Haztec.  Training generally takes a few hours, involves a multimedia presentation and a practical test.  Certificates are valid for years from date of issue.

Private training can also be arranged at Asylum Paintball’s training rooms for groups, teams or clubs.

Hydrostatic Testing of Paintball Cylinders

The correct adapter is fitted and the cylinder is hydraulically pumped with water to the cylinders test pressure. it is held there for 30 seconds and slowly returned to no pressure, The amount the cylinder material has stretched during the test is measured by on a burrett and if it is within the limits according to the design the result is recorded and the cylinder is drained and dried it is then inspected again for cracks internally. The test date is stamped on the shoulder of the cylinder and a test certificate is issued.

Composite cylinders are much the same but more attention is required when inspecting the exterior of the cylinder as the resin can be damaged easily. As the composite material stretches more than a solid metal cylinder they cannot be measured in the same way, so must be tested in a water jacket (a large sealed drum filled with water and having an outlet to a calibrated scales) as the cylinder is taken up to test pressure the cylinder expands and forces water to exit the drum to the scales at test pressure this amount is recorded. If the recorded amount is within limits the cylinder is then dried and re inspected and a label with the test date is bonded to the cylinder.

Force Feed

It force feeds paintballs to the marker via an impeller. It uses a spring or a belt mechanism to move the impeller and has no reliance on gravity. They are the only type of hopper that can sustain the high pneumatic action of electronic markers and are therefore used extensively in all paintball tournaments.

Firing Modes

Paintball markers have various firing modes. While semi-automatic has been the most commonly prescribed shooting method since the 1990s, with the latest improvements, a new mode called ramping has also become really popular.

Fully automatic: It continuously fires paintballs as long as the trigger is pulled. Almost all electronically powered markers have this feature.

Semi-automatic: A single shot is fired each time the trigger is pulled. This feature allows the player to set up his or her own pace while shooting.

Ramping: This is a new firing function, introduced recently. It automatically changes the firing mode to semi auto to fully auto or vice a versa, depending upon certain situations.

Most paint markers paintballs of 0.6caliber but their exact size can vary and may not be the same as mentioned.
