paper trimmer Buyer’s Guide
In reply to raminolta
Feb 23, 200unit area). the cut sheet prior to printing, I may get a head strike with the to flatten the cut sheet without scuffing up the surface in some way.
A commercial grade rotary paper cutter is the
The guillotine paper cutter “chops” the paper thanks to the lever that you press downwards. They are good for some time, but the lever may become loose and not give the best performances after a while. Once the lever it loose, you need to push the lever by hand close to the cutting edge before you actually chop it.
The sharp blade of the razor cutting machine slices paper as you move the blade up and down. In time, the blade may also become dull and you may end up buying a replacement blade.
If none of the above satisfies your needs, you may get a self-healing cutting mat frequently use in quilting. The mats are made of a composite materials and take well the cutting knives. You need a ruler and a hobby knife to make the cut. These mats often have 1” and ¼” grid lines.
What makes a good paper cutter
No matter how cheap, how long lasting, how easy to use your paper cutting machine may be, it’s worthless if it’s not sharp. A dull blade only bends the paper or cuts half way through. Or, in worst case scenario, it tears the papers and ruins the whole stack. A sharp blade makes the difference, especially when you want to cut at least sheets at once.
Cutting is nice, but cutting only once, it’s useless. So your paper cutting machine needs to be also long lasting. Your paper cutter also needs to have some weight as a lightweight one moves around too easily. A wood paper cutter means a longer life span for your cutting machine, whereas plastic needs to be high quality and not to leave a cheap feel.
This is not impossible, but a good price for your paper cutting machine is also something you want to have. You don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on it, but the less you pay…the less chance for it to be any good.
One last word
Paper cutters can be dangerous especially around children. The razor-type cutter is safer than the guillotine one, but they still can penetrate sensitive skin. Keep the exacto knives away as they are as dangerous as any kind of knife.
Keep in mind that the price always says something about what you’re getting. A small, personal paper cutter may cut only sheets at a time but it’s portable and does a good job. While the larger cutters can use a bit of educated choosing and shopping around.
Guillotines and Paper Trimmers
Guillotines and Paper Trimmers are both widely used in offices when there is a requirement to cut paper down in size. Most people will be familiar with using these devices, however many will be using the wrong name as Guillotine is widely used for both types of device. To avoid confusion why not take a look at our buyers guide below.
What to Look for in Your Guillotine Paper Cutter
Sharpness: This might come off as fairly obvious, but what is most important to me, is that the cutter is sharp. I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to use one of these things at my office and the dull blade just bends the paper or only cuts half way through. The worst is when it tears the paper and wrecks the whole stack. I want to make books, I want to make cards, I want to print my manifestos and zines! If the blade is sharp enough, the paper shouldn’t shift and move as it pushes the blade through the stack. And it should be able to cut at least sheets.
Durability and Life: Another thing that is important to me is how durable the cutter is. I want a cutter with a bit of weight that isn’t going to move around when I push down on the blade or lift up on one end. If it’s wood, that’s good and if it’s plastic, it better not be cheap feeling. I also want a decent amount of life and use out of the blade without having to replace it. Because I have no idea how that works.
Ease of Use: You would think that all guillotine paper cutters have a graph template so that you can easily cut straight lines and measure out what you are cutting, but not so, dear reader! Many do not. And that is not okay.
Price: I don’t want to spend a lot of money here. I’m looking for good value for the price and while I don’t want a product too cheap that makes me think it’s going to break in a week, I want to make a good investment on something that is going to last me years.
You know you want it.
The Swingline ClassicCut Ingento is made with solid maple and beautiful in every way, you’ll want to use this as a cheese board or to present all your fancy charcuterie when the guys are over. For reals.
All the bells and whistles of the previous models, including finger guard, alignment grid and latch hook; this may be the only paper cutter you will ever need.
Suitable for bigger projects with an 1inch self-sharpening blade, this guillotine paper cutter is just under pounds in weight, making it stable for whatever you are cutting, but can also do small, lightweight jobs like tissue paper. Super precise and worth the extra cost.
A feature which makes this a bit different than the other cutters is that the ruler is above the cutting surface, meaning that you can see the measurements clearly without covering them with the paper, which is kind of handy depending on your project. It also still has the grid, so you can also align your paper this way.
This model pretty much has everything you are going to need. Reminiscent of school cutters you grew up in in terms of strength and durability, it does it all.
Paper trimmers are crafting tools for exactly cutting paper materials.
That said, our quick pick if you need a heavy-duty trimmer for materials like cork, chipboard, vinyl, foam, burlap paper, and cardstock layers, check out the Fiskars Rotary Trimmer.
For lighter-duty paper-cutting applications, the Fiskars 1Inch SureCut is a better bet.
How Do They Compare
We take a look at popular cutters of both the rotary and guillotine variety and see how they compare.
First is the Westcott 12” TrimAir Titanium Wood Guillotine Paper Trimmer, which features anti-microbial protection on handle to combat germs and is the only one we looked at that had this feature. It Can cut through 30 sheets of 20 lb. paper with smooth, clean cuts. Users say the blade is very sharp and buyers should exercise caution. Good for use in the office or home. Great value for the price, but not very portable.
Next is the Fiskars 12” Recycled SureCut Trimmer. This features Fiskars own SureCut wire cut line and locking mechanism for straight, accurate cuts. Can cut sheets of paper at once. Users like the fact that they can easily replace the blade, which extends the life of the device. Good for general, light duty cutting.
History
Paper cutters, just like the ones we have today, were patented back in 184and 185by G. Massiquot. They have been in use since the 1830s, when, in 1837, there was a model built by Thirault with a blade fixed to a flat surface. Starting from the 19th century there have been considerable improvements made by Furnival in England, Fomm and Krause in Germany, and Seybold and Oswego in the US.
Industrial paper cuttersIn today’s paper industry, for cutting large stacks of paper or cardboard and other material, larger machines are used. Such machines operate in the same way as a guillotine.
How to Use One
Guillotine cutters, which are also known as stack cutters, have a manual lever and a straight blade which can cut through a few layers of paper at a time.
These cutters are named after the device used for execution during the French Revolution, for their vertical, angled blade. It is very easy to use these devices, though their sharp blades can be dangerous. For reducing the risk of injury, today’s guillotine cutters have standard safety features that need to be disabled before you start using it.
First, you need to position the trimmer on a flat, solid surface.
Then you press and release the latch of the blade (usually located under the blade’s hand grip).
