wheel locks Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy wheel locks, right? No!

DPAccessories

In this section, we are going to talk about the top five recommendations for the best wheel locks available. We will also provide you with a run down of each product’s key features, pros and cons so you can evaluate more effectively.

McGard 2453Chrome Cone Seat Wheel Locks

The McGard manufactures locks in the United States to meet and exceed OEM standards for durability and safety for vehicles. It’s also worth mentioning that the brand is a supplier to more than 30 lines of vehicles around the globe. The wheel locks are easy to use and they function as a normal lug nut. To add, they are equipped with a unique one-piece lock that can only be removed using a special key tool.

Another great feature of this wheel lock is the steel collar that guides the key towards the lock pattern. It places the key to be in perfect alignment for ease of removal and installation. The designs are also computer generated and it permits you an infinite number of key patterns. In addition, they feature an extra narrow pattern groove that is resistant to intruding removal tools.

For its specifications, material is made from restricted chemistry steel that makes it highly-reliable, as well as durable. Plating includes three layers of nickel and a layer of micro porous chrome that protects the lock against rust.

Genuine Toyota Accessories 00276-00900 Wheel Lock

The Genuine Toyota Accessories Wheel Lock is one of the best available in the market right now. These wheel locks are made especially for use on Toyota cars. The set comes with a one of a kind key that permits you to install and remove the nuts. This is a great feature because it prevents your wheels from being stolen by thieves. To add, the nuts feature weight balancing and shape that makes them very easy to use.

The Genuine Toyota Wheel Locks feature plating that is triple-nickel, which improves the quality of the wheel locks. It also is a great feature because it prevents corrosion due to extreme weather conditions. In addition, this feature indicates high performance, quality and durability the wheel locks can offer. Lastly, the manual exhibits easy to follow guidelines for convenient installation and removal of wheel locks.

Gorilla Automotive 7164NBC Black Wheel Lock

The Gorilla Automotive Wheel Lock is another contender for the best wheel locks available in the market today. For its specifications, thread size is set at M1by 1.50 and features cone seat style. It is interesting to know that these locks are the original design that has set the standard for wheel security. This is the reason why the brand is one of the most trusted and has the most advanced locks today.

Another great offering of these wheel locks is the enhanced security it can provide the user. An external security pattern makes the Gorilla Automotive Wheel locks impossible to unlock without the matching key. Material is made from steel and is chrome plated for additional strength and reliability.

These wheel locks are another great offering of the Genuine brand, but specifically manufactured for Honda cars. The locks aid in providing cheap and reliable protection from tire and wheel theft. This is the reason why you have to keep your Honda car using these factory wheel locks. What makes this outstanding is that it does not attract attention because the visual is very subtle.

A matching key comes with the wheel lock set. This key can be used for easy installation and removal using your Honda lug nuts in this wheel lock set. Material is made from hardened steel, which makes them long-lasting and resistant to rust. It also features chrome triple nickel plating that makes them shiny and corrosion resistant. Lastly, the set comes with a handy storage pouch to prevent the misplacing of key socket.

DPAccessories LCB3L6HE-BK04LKBlack Wheel Locks

Another great feature of these wheel locks is the proprietary cathode black coating, which improves the durability. It is also pleasing to look at because of the sharp appearance of the satin black paint. To add, the locks have undergone a quality control process that ensures the locks they manufacture have the best quality. One thing to note, this particular set will not work with a previously ordered set.

McGard 2415Wheel Locks

McGard is one of the best wheel lock manufacturers out there. McGard’s wheel locks are just like any other wheel locks but they just put in their own special touch to things that really makes their product unique.

The best thing about McGard is their chemically treated steel. They make their own steel according to OEM Standards, specifically for their products. Their steel is really reliable and is infamous for its durability.

The McGard 24157 wheel locks come have a 12mm x 1.50 thread size with a length of 1.2inches. The interior of the lock has their own steel and the outer side is plated with chrome to protect the lock from corrosion.

If you’ve bought multiple wheel locks from different manufacturers, you’ll see that packaging is a key factor. Most manufacturers, even some that are making the best wheel locks available, just chuck their locks in a box and that’s it. The locks are scratched and demolished during all the shipping. However, McGard offers the perfect shipping. They have their locks sealed in an air tight plastic bag and each lock is stored in completely different compartments.

One problem with wheel locks is that most manufacturers use the same key to open thousands of wheel locks. If the guy stealing your tires has your key by any chance, then consider your tires gone because the lock will be as easy remove as the lug. But, McGard is completely different in that case. McGard’s unique feature is that they don’t ship the same generic key to every customer. They use computer-coded patterns and make a unique key for each of their locks. This way, no one key would fit another wheel lock.

Gorilla Automotive 6163Guard Locks

Gorilla Automotive is probably one of the only wheel lock manufacturers that can stand toe to toe with McGard. Gorilla offers a large variety of thread sizes to go with their wheel locks. They have ½ inch, 7/1inch, 12mm x 1.25, 12mm x 1.and 14mm x 1.50 with a length of 1.inches.

Gorilla Guard Locks also have the same structure as most of the wheel locks out there. The locks have the standard triple nickel plating with a chrome outing to finish the job. The chrome is perfect to protect the lock from corrosion and rust.

These locks are pretty good for the price that they come at. They are a lot cheaper than most of the best wheel locks on the market. But, the problem is, as we discussed earlier, the generic key. Gorilla doesn’t have a system to produce unique keys. Since Gorilla is one of the leading lock manufacturers out there, there is almost a certainty that a trained thief will have the key to these lugs.

Gorilla isn’t really famous for its packaging and most people complained that the locks came out damaged from the box. But Gorilla made a huge change with these locks. Just like McGard, these locks are stored in an airtight box in separate compartments so they don’t rub against each other.

DPAccessories LCB3L2HE-BK04LKWheel Lock Set

If we’re talking about the overall quality of an accessories’ manufacturer, it just doesn’t get better than DPAccessories. DPAccessories are highly known for their durability and reliability and their wheel locks are just the same.

DPAccessories are manufactured from cold forged and hardened steel to ensure that the locks stay the same for a long time. The lock contains 1/2″-20 thread size. The thread size for each lock is made with high precision so they fit your wheel perfectly.

These wheel locks allow you to choose a couple of things. The first thing they allow you to choose is the finish. There are two colors available; jet black and chrome. The second thing is the number of locks you want. DPAccessories allows you to choose either or locks. No other manufacturer does this. But, honestly, the extra lock can be pretty helpful if you need one for a spare tire.

DPAccessories is also one of the manufacturers that don’t make a generic key. All wheel locks have different keys and two different set of locks will never open with the same key.

DPAccessories has a pretty quick process for the replacement of a lost key. Since each key is unique, you’re going to have to contact the manufacturers if you want a replacement. The locks come with a special card for your key. In case you need a new key, you need to send this card to DPAccessories and they will send your key back as soon as possible.

Choosing the Right Material

Wheel locks are made of different steel and titanium alloys. Some materials are much stronger than some of the other. You need to pick the best material because buying cheap material means you’re not buying wheel locks, you’re just buying expensive wheel lugs.

If you don’t know what material is good for you then just go ahead and buy chrome vanadium or some other titanium alloy. The thing about chrome vanadium is that it’s pretty tough and anti corrosive. So, that may be one of the best locks you can buy.

Climbing wheels

Rotating weight is felt most when ascending, so a wheel suited to climbing is usually designed with low weight in mind. Such wheels generally feature a shallow-profile rim and a low spoke count.

Another benefit of such a wheel is seen in ride quality. Typically, the deeper a rim gets in its shape, the harsher the ride — therefore climbing wheels are often more compliant.

Mid-section aerodynamic wheels

Aerodynamic wheels have quickly become a popular choice for creating that ‘pro look’. An aerodynamic wheel will usually feature a deeper section rim, with a rim depth of around 30mm being the typical starting point.

As aero designs have improved in recent years, there has been a big uptake in these mid-depth wheels — which unlike some deep-section models (see below) now provide a sensible balance between low weight, ride quality and improved performance against the wind.

Aerodynamic rims are often made from carbon fibre in order to keep weight low. However, budget options are likely to be made of or feature aluminium, so will be heavy.

Deep-section aerodynamic wheels

When speed is a priority, a deep-section rim of 50mm or more cuts through the wind with less turbulence. However, the additional depth can cause problems if riding in high cross-winds and often adds weight, which is why mid-depth wheels have become a popular compromise outside of time trials and fast sprint courses.

People who race on deep aerodynamic wheels will often own a set of training wheels for use outside of racing.

Training wheels

While speed and low weight are a priority for racing wheels, training or ‘everyday’ wheels must be durable and able take a beating.

Because rims wear out over time with braking, alloy training wheels are often best. A custom, handbuilt wheelset — where replacement spokes and rims are relatively cheap — are a good choice (see below for more on these). Other options are budget wheels from major brands, which can be quite solid and have parts that aren’t too expensive to replace.

For this type of usage, expect a wheelset weight of 1,500–1,800g for something that is well priced. A budget wheelset is likely to be 1,900g or over.

Road wheel rim width explained

While the 622mm bead seat diameter is an industry standard, the width of the rim is not. Recently there has been a trend towards wider rims because they offer greater tyre volume and a stiffer wheel, which in turn provides a more comfortable ride, improved bike control, lower rolling resistance and potentially fewer flats. For those racing, wider rims have been shown to be more aerodynamic too.

The confusing part is that some brands quote external rim width, while others internal. Looking to internal width, anything under 14mm is considered very narrow, 19mm and over is wide and anything between is sufficient for common 23-25c tyres.

Shimano freehubs

If you have an 11-speed drivetrain you will need to ensure the wheels are 11-speed compatible.

It is possible to buy a cassette that will allow you to use an 11-speed drivetrain with 10-speed wheels. Such a thing exists from the likes of Token, Edco and others. Just be aware that they are generally more expensive.

Beware of older Shimano 10-speed wheels from 201These featured a narrower 10-speed only freehub body with taller splines and so will not work with any other speed cassette.

SRAM cassettes use Shimano’s spline system, so are nearly all cross-compatible. The exception here is SRAM’s new 1×1 specific XD-Driver, which is its own standard.

Campagnolo freehubs

The freehub diameter and splines of Campagnolo freehubs are very different to that of Shimano/SRAM. If you have Campagnolo gearing, ensure that the freehub body is matched.

Many aftermarket wheel brands will sell freehub bodies as a replacement part — so it’s possible to switch a Campagnolo wheel to Shimano and vice-versa (Shimano-branded wheels being a key exception here).

Freehub ratchet speeds

A feature that’s commonly overlooked in a hub is the ratchet speed or the angle of uptake. Hubs typically don’t go lower than 1points of engagement per 360-degree revolution, but hubs that offer more can provide the feeling of faster acceleration out of corners.

Rim brake road wheels

Many road bike wheels are still designed for use with rim brakes, which means the rim must offer a consistent braking surface. This is why most quality aluminium rims claim to offer a ‘machined’ surface, which generally guarantees an even braking surface at manufacturing.

Carbon rims typically don’t perform as well when braking, nor last as long as aluminium rims — especially in the wet. Keep this in mind if you’re considering a carbon wheel for everyday use.

Disc brake road wheels

Disc brake wheels feature a hub with a mount for the disc rotor. Because of the high forces these rotors exert on a wheel when braking, disc-brake wheels often feature higher spoke counts. The latest designs do away with the rim braking surface entirely and modify this traditionally reinforced area to achieve lower weight.

It’s worth noting that fitting disc brakes to a road bike isn’t as simple as swapping out the wheels, both the frame and fork must be designed to accept disc brakes too.

When buying disc brake wheels, it’s worth being aware that there are two types of rotor mount: Center Lock and six-bolt. Center Lock is a splined system from Shimano, which with the use of an adaptor, can also use six-bolt rotors. Six-bolt hubs can only fit six-bolt rotors.

Spokes lace the hub to the rim. Generally, wheels with higher spoke counts are stronger and more durable, but this comes with a weight penalty.

Typically a spoke is made from a piece of stainless steel wire that’s been cold-forged and then had a thread added to it. Some higher-end wheels can also feature spokes made from aluminium, carbon fibre or even titanium.

When it comes to a quality wheel build, correct spoke tension is critical. Too loose and the spokes can unwind, and the constant flex will eventually lead to broken spokes or cracked rims. Too tight and the ride quality will be harsh, with an increased risk of the rim cracking at the spoke attachment point.

Factory vs. handbuilt wheels

The merits of factory vs. handbuilt wheels are often argued.

Confusingly factory wheels are, in fact, commonly built by hand. The key distinction however is that factory wheels are built to an exact specification and you buy them as an off-the-shelf item, often with proprietary spoke and rim designs.

Handbuilt wheels take a more classical approach, where the hubs, spokes, nipples and rims can be bought separately and chosen to best suit a rider’s individual needs.

Handbuilt wheels are commonly kept for training, long-distance and everyday uses. However, there are of course examples where the opposites are true.

Road wheel glossary

Cup and cone bearing: the alternative to cartridge bearing hubs is cup and cone. It’s most common on entry-level wheels and all those sold by Shimano. These feature loose ball bearings that run on a permanent outer bearing race, with a cone shaped inner race that can be adjusted.

Gorilla Automotive is a pretty fine manufacture of tools and accessories. When it comes to lugs, they claim to provide 200% increased torque. They make some sick stuff that is used all over the globe. Fortunately for us, their wheel locks are no different. The best thing about these locks is that they are pretty sturdy and they won’t rust even after years of use.

The lock itself is made from case-hardened steel surrounded by a completely chrome plated outing. This lock is virtually impossible to break in and provides the best security out there for your tire. The wheel locks come in three sizes; ½ inch, 12mm x 1.2and 12mm x 1.5, while the length is precisely 1.inches. The black chrome wheel locks come in packs of four with five lugs for each tire. This can work whether you have four-lug tires or five ones. Four lugs would mean that you have enough locks for the spare tire back in the trunk. But, if you use four lugs, this means that you would have some spare ones in case you need it.

Gorilla Automotive also offers some of the easiest return policies. Now, whether one of your lugs is damaged or you lost your key, all you have to do is sent Gorilla your receipt and a return address with a few bucks in the envelope and you’re golden. Gorilla will send your stuff back to you within 12-1business days.

The 00276-00900 Wheel Lock manufactured by Toyota is one of the safest wheel locks out there. If any of you have ever used any accessories from Toyota, you will know that they make some of the toughest parts of the world. And their wheel locks also fall under the same category.

The locks are made of precision machined and hardened steel that means that it is one of the hardest locks out there. The outer body is plated with triple-nickel and a chrome finish that is optimal to prevent corrosion. Unlike the Gorilla wheel locks, these ones have a total of four lugs in the packaging. This means that you only have to use one lug per tire. For some people, this is an advantage, but you guessed it right, fewer lugs means less security.

The wheel locks are perfectly balanced to the point that the weights of the locks are equal to the original lugs from the tire. This way you won’t have to rebalance the tire to accommodate the addition of the extra wheel locks.

Toyota also supports easy return or exchange of their accessories. All you have to do is contact the retailer you bought it from or you could just contact Toyota directly, and they’ll be more than happy to exchange your product.

McGard 2453Chrome Cone Seat Wheel Locks

McGard has been constructing wheel locks since 196McGard is one of the only wheel locks that were completely manufactured within the United States. Even though the materials for the product are gathered from different parts of the world, the materials are put together according to OEM standards that put it on the top of the list when it comes to durability.

McGard constructs their own chemically treated steel specifically for their accessories. The steel is made is the United States and each layer of the steel is separately hardened and treated. This is different from other locks that only treat the upper surface.

Just like the best wheel locks out there, McGard also goes above and beyond to prevent corrosion. The outer body of the lock consists of three layers of nickel and one layer of chrome. The first layer of nickel is for resisting corrosion, the second layer is for a shiny look and the third one, combined with the chrome, prevents natural rusting.

Unlike other wheel locks, McGard actually uses computerized coding for the keys. This means that even though two pairs of wheels locks are the exact same model, there’s a huge chance that the key of one won’t fit the other one.

Removing the lock is as easy as fastening it. The lock has a steel collar that guides the key so that the key slips into the lock pattern. After that, all you have to do is turn it. It completely eliminates struggling with the key just because it won’t fit in.

The McGard 2453comes in a neatly packed box with five locks and a key. McGard also uses one lug per tire so that means that these locks are also really cheap. The four locks go on the tires in use, and the fifth one can be used for the spare tire.

Gorilla Automotive 6163Acorn Gorilla Guard Locks

We already discussed Gorilla’s set of 2wheel nuts, now it is time to discuss their four locks set. These wheel locks come in a variety of sizes; ½ inch, 7/1inch, 12mm x 1.25, 12mm x 1.and 14mm x 1.50 with a length of 1.inches.

The main bodies of these lugs are similar to the 2lock set we mentioned earlier. Hardened and treated steel and chrome finish giving it a fancy look.

Similar to most of the best wheel locks on this list, these locks are also equipped with triple-nickel plating and a chrome finish to prevent excessive corrosion. There are just four locks which mean that you won’t have one for your extra tire. However, the price doesn’t do the quality of the product justice. Even though there are only four locks in the package, it is still one of the most affordable locks out there. With only half the price as some of the other single lug wheel locks out there, this makes the 6163very easy to purchase.

The packaging is much better than the other Gorilla locks. The other ones were often damaged due to sub-standard packaging. However, in these locks, the packaging is not a problem since each lock is stored in separate compartments to prevent damage to the locks.

Genuine Subaru B321SFG000 Wheel Lock Kit

Subaru’s cars might not be a big deal or a best-seller, but their accessories are a completely different story entirely. Subaru makes some of the best accessories out there, and, believe it or not, their wheel locks also fall under the same category.

These wheel locks are also manufactured according to OEM standards. This means that all of the raw materials used in the manufacture of this product were shipped from OEM. Hence, the materials don’t get any better because OEM produces some of the best and toughest materials out there.

The wheel locks usually support the thread size 12mm x 1.2and 12mm x 1.50 which is the same as some of the other wheel locks. The hardened steel makes sure that the wheel lock can bear huge amounts of torque without cracking. Chrome plating on the outer side prevents corrosion and rusting. The one good thing about Subaru is their warranty for their wheel locks. Unlike other companies, they provide complete replacements for poor workmanship or damage received to the locks before you open the package.

DPAccessories LCB3L2HE-BK04LKWheel Locks Set

DPAccessories is one of the best manufacturers of accessories and solely dedicated to only accessories. DPAccessories wheel locks are generally called one of the top dogs in the world of wheel locks. Why? We are just about to explain that.

The best thing about these wheel locks is that they don’t have a generic key. Every lock of the same model will have different keys and no key will work on two different locks.

The next reason why you should buy these locks is that they offer a little bit of customization. First thing is that they let you choose whether you want the five lock set or the four one. The second is the color on the locks. You can choose from a shiny jet black sort of finish or chrome plating. Both are equally attractive but the black one looks a little better with most wheels.

DPAccessories also provides a cost-free replacement for your key. All you have to do is make sure that you saved your key card when you bought the locks. Then, just send the card to DPAccessories and you’ll have your new key back to you in no time.

McGard 2415Chrome Cone Seat Wheel Locks

McGard is highly known for its chemically treated steel that is made completely for McGard products. As we discussed a little earlier, these locks are completely made in the United States following OEM Standards for reliability and durability.

The wheel locks have a 12mm x 1.50 thread size with an overall size of 1.2inches. The wheel lock itself, as mentioned before, is made of chemically treated and hardened steel that is the standard when it comes to toughness. The outer side is plated with chrome to prevent corrosion. The packaging of McGard is as good as it gets. A neat box, separate compartments and tight fittings make sure that your product isn’t damaged in any way.

McGard offers a warranty for damage and poor workmanship for one year after the locks are bought. So, if your locks break due to some reason or start rusting during the first year, McGard will be more than happy to offer replacements.

Spline Drive

These wheel locks fit into aftermarket-vehicles. The lug-nut fits into a smaller lug-holes, as the diameter is thinner. These locks feature a closed-end design, larger seating surface, and also have more gripping power.

Extended stug-engagement is enabled, which makes these easy to install on aftermarket cars, and also makes them ideal for vehicles which have a narrower diameter lug-design.

Alloy Wheel Locks

These are typically sold directly through the vehicle manufacturer. They are sturdy, made of a solid alloy material finish, and they require a specialty socket, which is designed by the manufacturer, in order for you to be able to remove the lock.

Clamp Wheel Lock

As the name implies, this is a clamp which is placed around the wheel, and the rims, in order to protect both from thieves. They are often referred to as a “boot,” which is a device that doesn’t allow you to move/drive your vehicle, until the clamp is removed.

Although these are a bit larger in nature, and harder to utilize daily, they can be used sporadically for optimal security if you are parking your car in a dangerous area, or new location you aren’t familiar with.

A Quick Tip: Glance over the type of car you own and the model you are choosing for the car (more on that in the latter part of the article) before you hit on the buy button.

Now that we are done with wheel lock types, we can move to the next section of the article which discusses my very own shortlist of the top candidates available on the market.

The triple-lock system.

Heavy-duty steel frame, can’t be broken or unhinged with tools.

You can tighten the clamp to specifically fit your wheels for added security.

The clamp features an epoxy coating, so rain or elements won’t cause it to rust.

Security, durability, and advanced internal mechanism; these are a few of the features owners will appreciate with this wheel lock clamp. It is easy to install, and affords three additional layers of security to vehicle owners.

Features of the McGard locks include

Unique groove design. The interior rigid design and ultra-narrow entry, doesn’t allow burglars or thieves easy access to the inter-locking system.

The micro-porous chrome exterior isn’t susceptible to rust or other element-damage.

The hex-size patterns allow you to easily fit your new lugs onto most SUV tires.

An infinite number of installation patterns makes it virtually impossible for thieves to break in, and remove these from your tires.

You’re probably familiar with Gorilla glues; and, if so you know how powerful they are. Just imagine what the Gorilla Acorn Guards are going to afford you with, in terms of added security, when it comes to your car’s tires and rims.

12mmX1.5’’ thread size allows you to seamlessly install these wheel locks onto your car’s tires with the respective tool that will come with your lock.

A 60-degree conical seat is virtually impossible to break into; and, even if thieves are capable of accessing the interior of the lug set, they are virtually impossible to remove from your tires.

Your purchase comes with 4-wheel locks and the key, which is required for installation and removal. The lugs can’t be removed with a traditional wrench or power tools.

Highlighted  Features

The bright-red finish helping to deter thieves from trying to steal your car.

The patented, self-locking feature, renders your car useless while this is in place.

A sturdy, tempered-steel design, coated with a PVC-finish, protects your club investment. It won’t fade, or otherwise get damaged by sun, and it is rust-resistant, even in harsh or inclement weather-areas.

A longer length-design, allows you to place this U-shaped club on nearly any steering wheel, regardless of the interior size/wheel area of your car.

Suitable for tires up to 14’’ in width, this system by McGard features a conical shape-design for ease of installation. It will fit into place, implementing a cone-seat style design. It features both 2and 2mm hex-dual systems for different vehicles you plan on installing the lugs onto.

With this set, you will receive a set of 4-locks and one key. The smooth-exterior makes this lock-system easy to install. However, the internal, rigid-lock mechanism, makes this nearly impossible to break or remove, if you do not have the appropriate key to do so.

Even the most heavy-duty power drills, or plier sets, aren’t going to break into this thread lug-set once they are properly installed onto your tires.

Additional features of this set include: A universal fit for cars, trucks, trailers, or SUV models, allows you to place these lugs on your investment, especially with newer vehicles, or aftermarket-rims you choose to install onto your car.

The ability to install your new lug-set onto tires up to 14’’ in width.

OEM standards are met in terms of: construction, durability, and material finish.

Powder-coating prevents rust and corrosion once installed onto your tires.

User-friendly keys. This is the only way to install, replace, or to remove the lugs. Without it, power tools and wrenches are rendered useless in the event a thief tries to steal your tires and rims.

A universal fit for cars, trucks, trailers, or SUV models, allows you to place these lugs on your investment, especially with newer vehicles, or aftermarket-rims you choose to install onto your car.

These genuine- Honda lug wheel locks, are specifically designed for your Honda manufactured vehicle. They feature a chrome-plated exterior design. Made of sturdy, high-quality nickel, nothing is going to rust, damage, or corrode these lugs once they are installed onto your Honda.

The triple-nickel finish not only brings out the natural shine in your new lock set, but also helps to prevent from rusting if you live in a region where rain or snow are frequently present. A hardened-steel construction is also theft-resistant.

If you do not have the appropriate key, you aren’t capable of prying these off any car, or otherwise using power tool sets to remove them from tires and rim sets.

Features of this club include

The universal fit. Even for smaller tires/vehicles, you can place the club on for protection.

Deterrence. Simply placing this over your tires will deter thieves and burglars.

Soft-coated interior. The clamp won’t damage tires, puncture them, or damage your costly rims.

The wheels are immobilized with installation. Nothing will move the tires with this clamp over them.

So, you’ve decided you are going to invest in some type of wheel lock. You’ve seen the clamps which lock into place right over the rims and tires.

We’ve discussed the lug-nut sets, which allow you to place lugs into the socket where the original nuts (manufacturer nuts) would otherwise go. We’ve also looked at the club, which locks the steering wheel into place, and won’t allow your car to be driven while it is locked.

The Brand

Sure, you should consider the brand before you invest in a wheel lock system. High-quality items are typically made by and sold by the top manufacturers. So, even if it does cost a little more money for this protection, it is worth the investment for your car and rims to be fully protected.

Use and Installation Process

Of course, you want the best in protection. However, you don’t want to purchase something you won’t know how to use or install. Before you purchase your clamp or lugs, make sure it is something you will actually use, know how to install, and can properly install, in order to ensure they are actually going to protect your car, in the manner they should protect it.

Guarantee

It is important to choose a product which guarantees effectiveness. Look for those items which guarantee the benefits of protection, while also offering you some kind of money back guarantee or deductible, in the event a break-in occurs while the deterrent system is installed on your vehicle.

A company’s guarantee is one of the most important things imaginable, which informs you that you are buying a well-made product, and one which will work as it is intended to work.

This shouldn’t be the highest factor on your list, nor should it be the deciding factor. But, like any other purchase you make, when comparing products, you have to consider the cost. Cost of maintenance, improvements, replacement, and so forth.  It is also a good idea to compare different sites and stores, in order to find the best deal when you have decided on the system you are going to use for your vehicle’s protection.

Ultimately, every vehicle owner is going to choose something different when it comes to protecting their vehicle(like car), the tires, and the rims. With this in mind, using these variables when comparing and considering these items, is a good way to help you pick the right protective-items for your lovely vehicle. Make sure you consider these factors, in order to ensure you choose the best wheel locking-protective systems available.

Deter Theft

A huge security-gate at the front of a home is a deterrent to thieves. The same rule applies when it comes to your car. Imagine if there is a huge, bright and yellow lock on the wheel. This is immediately going to deter thieves to a less-risky vehicle, making yours less of a target.

Immobilizing Device

In the event a thief/burglar invades your space, these motion sensors will prevent theft. If anyone comes into your space, or tries to steal something, motion detectors/sensors are a simple way to prevent certain types of theft. If any form of unwarranted motion (light sensitivity) is activated, the alarm will sound.

As a vehicle owner, you want to take as many precautions as possible to protect your vehicle. These are some of the systems available to you today, to protect your car.

Many manufacturers today have built-in, high-tech alarm systems. Many insurance companies also offer great discounts if you have these newer systems, as you are considered to be a “safer” (less risky) client to insure. Regardless of the options you eventually choose to go with, consider these when deciding upon the best ways to protect your vehicle.

Universal Design

Also known as D-locks, these are possibly the most common type of bike lock. Similar in principal to a padlock, they are robust and reliable. The “U” element of the lock should be fixed around the frame of your bike and the immovable object you’re locking it to, then the removable barrel is attached and locked in place, creating a very secure deterrent to thieves.

Available in a wide range of materials and sizes, and an even wider range of prices, U-locks are suitable for almost any location, and for any bike. Because of the fixed dimensions of a U-lock, they are ideal when partnered with another cable lock, which can be used to lock the wheels, quick-release components or accessories to the frame, making them more difficult to steal.

If your U-lock comes with an additional cable, please be aware that the cable is not included in the Sold Secure rating and should not be relied upon alone to secure your bike to an immovable object. See our guide on U-locks here.

Cable Locks

Flexibility and light-weight make cable locks an attractive option for many cyclists.

With the ability to stretch and fit around a wider range of fixed objects than a U-lock, cable locks are highly practical, and their lighter weight and compact nature makes them perfect for city riders and commuters.

Cable locks also cover the widest budget, ranging from super £locks, right through to ultra-secure heavy duty locks that are resistant to most cutting tools. See our guide on cable locks here.

Chain Locks

Simple and effective, chain locks are frequently used for motorbikes, and are more than suitable for bicycles. Premium chain locks use a hardened metal chainlink, wrapped in a super-tough kevlar lined cover that can put up a fight against the hardiest of cutting tools.

Although they are heavier than their other counterparts, it’s easy to ride with one across your chest.  See our guide on chain locks here.

Wheel Locks

Wheel locks are also known as o-locks, ring locks, and frame locks. These types of locks are found on all bikes in the Netherlands, Japan, and most of Europe. These types of locks attach directly onto the frame of your bike to help prevent it from being stolen. Once it’s installed, you will just insert your key and push down the level so that a metal ring slides between the spokes of your back tire to prevent it from being stolen.

They are incredibly convenient too because they are installed right onto your bike. No longer will you have to worry about ensuring that you packed your bike lock when you go on trips or lugging around heavy chains. It’s right there on your bike, all you need is the key.

While these types of locks are great, they are not ideal for overnight security in a big city; anyone could just lift up the back wheel of your bike and be gone. They work best for if you are just stopping for a little break, running into a shop, or taking in a view.

D-Locks or U-Locks

These types of locks are more secure than cable locks, plus more than likely if a potential thief were to see one of these they would walk away. Instead of a cable that can easily be cut with a wire cutter, these types of locks use metal as the loop and then have a lock attached to it. Because of this, they can easily resist just about any type of tool that someone would use to remove it.

If you decide to go with this type of lock, you need to find one that leaves little to no space between it and the area that you are locking it around; this helps ensure that your bike is safe.

Some downsides to D-locks (U-locks) are that they are incredibly bulky and heavy. Therefore, they are rather cumbersome to carry around when you are on a bike tour. They can also be rather expensive and might not actually work to protect the area of your bike that you are hoping to protect.

Heavy Chain Locks

These are a great buy if you are living in a big city and are worried about your bike wheels being stolen. They are incredibly durable and keep your bike secure—you can leave it on overnight and know that everything will still be there in the morning. They resist any type of tool that someone would use to remove it, just make sure that you get a padlock that is just as sturdy.

While these are incredibly secure, they can be super expensive and heavy and bulky to carry around on your trips.

Bike Lock Keys vs. Combinations

Keyed locks are exactly as they sound: Bike locks that require a key to unlock it. They are easy for someone to pick if they want to, sometimes all they need is a ballpoint pen. They usually come with two keys so that you will have a backup if you lose one, but you could also get a new one made by a key maker. You will find these types of locks on U-locks and chain locks.

Combination locks are locks that require a certain code to be entered into them in order for them to unlock. They are super convenient because you don’t have to try to remember to grab your lock keys as you are leaving, but they can also be annoying because you should remember a code. They are a step up from keyed locks, but they can have the same issues as them. You will usually find these on cable locks.

Keyed locks and combination locks work well if you are really not worried about it being picked or if you live in a low crime area, but not ideal if you live in a big city with a lot of theft.

A bike seat secured with an old bike chain

Or many bike shops will now do it for you for a small fee.

Pinhead

With Pinhead skewers, there are 11,500 different key combinations. Each key is engraved with a nine digit code that you can use to order replacement keys or more matching locks.

I should mention that with older Pinhead models, it was possible to unscrew the head relatively easily with a Gator Grip universal socket. However, the skewers now come with POG washers that prevent this happening.

Pitlock

Pitlock skewers boast over 1000 different key combinations. And they have the added security of a smooth shield of steel which surrounds the head and prevents any other tool being used to loosen it.

There are locks for both wheels and seats. And for both quick release wheels and solid axle wheels.

Each key comes with a code card enabling you to order replacement keys and further matching locks. And as with Pinhead, you can also register this code online.

Unlike the Pinhead key, the keys that come with the Pitlock have no lever, so in order to use them you will need to use a mm spanner or insert another tool such as an Allen key into the hole to get enough leverage to screw and unscrew the nut.

Locks with Non Standard Keys

So a thief who bought one would have easy access to all the wheels and seats locked with the same brand. On top of this, they can usually be opened easily with a Gator Grip universal socket.

Wrapping up

For the back wheel, you should be able to use the same lock you use on your frame. For the front wheel, you would need a separate lock. Either a small U-lock that just locks the wheel to the frame. Or for better overall security, a slightly larger U-lock that can lock the wheel to the frame and the bike rack.

Factors to Consider When Purchasing a Wheelock

Price is a consideration when it comes to buying decisions. If you do care about your security, it is recommended that you do not skimp on the locks particularly the excellent ones. However, you should always be careful not to be blackmailed by the cheaply constructed wheel locks. It is better to dig deeper into your pocket and keep your vehicle secured by durably constructed wheel locks. The thing is, go for the best quality you can afford.

Unique Key

The locks you purchase should come with a unique key because the universal key will be used to remove the locks in no time. There have been cases where some locks have been accessed by crooks while using a universal key. That said, you should consider locks with a special key.

Cable Locks

Cable locks are the most flexible option to secure your bike with. They can coil into a compact shape which makes them great for transporting with you. Available in a variety of thicknesses and lengths, cable locks are great for threading through your components, especially handy for wheels with quick release that can be easily lifted without protection.

Kryptonite Kyrptoflex

The locking mechanism is key operated and protected in a hardened shell which is both pick and drill resistant.

Abus Granit Steel-O-Flex

Another leading brand name in the security industry is German manufacturers, Abus.

Operated by key, this lock is equipped with two keys. One has a fitted LED light which helps in low-light conditions.

Available in either 100cm or 80cm lengths, the range of locking possibilities are still vast. Ideally through a wheel and frame combination.

Kryptonite Evolution Mini

The Kryptonite Evolution Mini is compact and ideal for single frame usage.

The hardened steel loop is coupled with a strong deadbolt locking mechanism which is pick-lock resistant. This product has been rated a Silver grade by Sold Secure for some additional piece of mind.

The Evolution Mini fits a variety of frame tube sizes from 25-80mm, and a range of frame shapes: triangular, oval and circular.
